EZproxy issue:
Many of the citations do not include URLs because the URLs had an EZproxy which I could not figure out how to remedy (i.e. remove). I've removed them but would like to have them added back, to make the references more accessible, even if beyond a paywall.
Nationality:
Though I suspect the subject is Canadian, I cannot find verifiable proof so I have not mentioned it in the article.
Was Erin Combs the "first" female photographer hired by a major Canadian newspaper?:
My hunch is yes, but there is no verifiable source that says so. It's complicated by the fact that some women freelanced for papers, and one of the articles in the references says that some women contributed photo to the Toronto Star as freelancers, but Combs was the first to do it regularly. But, regardless, the question is when a Canadian newspaper hired someone -- not just used their freelance photos. @Almostds: I had the same problem with proxies about the same time as you, but I was lucky as an admin showed me how to fix it. I'm going to assume that you were using ProQuest. I fixed the first one in the text "Feminists welcome camera woman", here's a step-by-step of what to do:
Cut out the extra parts of the URL: Modify the base domain to cut out the proxy part, and keep "docview" and the number immediately following. It should like this: https://search.proquest.com/docview/1434831764 The other parts are specific to the client and client account you use to access ProQuest, and won't work for other people. However, this URL only works if directly logged in to ProQuest, and won't work through a proxy account.
Add the parameter |url-access=subscription to the citation. This puts a little red padlock icon after the URL.
Remove the |via=ProQuest parameter. Then, after the citation but before the closing </ref>, add {{subscription required|via=ProQuest}}. This is supposed to prevent archiving bots from attempting to archive the paywalled site (otherwise they'll archive the ProQuest login screen as a successful archive).
