Not convinced that the Flt Sgt E D Atkinson who was reported missing in action is the same person as this. Most unusual and unlikely for officers to re-join the same force as an NCO, the CWGC entry is for a Flt Sgt Edgar David Atkinson a 21-year old Navigator with 640 Squadron who was killed 4 November 1944. You make a convincing case that I have erred. I was unable to get anything but a "no result" from CWGC while writing the article, but you apparently are more talented than I.

Yes, it is unusual for an officer to re-enlist as an enlisted man. Nevertheless, it did happen. If you spend enough time in the London Gazette, you will come across notices of officers resigning commissions to enlist in the ranks. I suspect there were also World War I pilots who couldn't pass the flight physical to fly in the Big Deuce. Certainly, I have written a couple of bios in which an officer returned to duty as an enlisted man. So, it's unusual, but not unheard of.
