Talk:Damnation Alley (film)

Latest comment: 5 years ago by LeoStarDragon1 in topic About the Centerfold

Anybody remember the gasoline ad campaign that featured the Landmaster and a young kid who drove it, "The Road Worrier"?? I forget what oil company it was, but it was a hilarious commercial(s). He's picking up his girlfriend (in the Landmaster, naturally) and is talking to her father, who asks, "How you doin', Road?" and he simply replies, "Worried." From the novel article edit

I removed this Landmaster info from the article about the original novel:

The 12-wheeled vehicle used in the film was created by Jefferies Automotive in Universal City, California. Despite the appearance of two Landmasters in the film, only one was built at a cost of $300,000 in 1976. The Landmaster is powered by a 391 cubic-inch Ford industrial engine, and features a fully-functional, custom-built "tristar" wheel arrangement, which could actually help it crawl over boulders. It also used an innovative steering mechanism that guided the vehicle, not by the front wheels, but by bending the middle section with hydraulic rams to affect a turn. The Landmaster's bodywork was made with 3/8-inch steel plating, which helped it tip the scales at over 10 tons. It was so tough that it survived a 25-foot jump during testing with no damage. Currently, the original Landmaster is alive and well, and resides in the lot at the Jefferies Automotive shop on Cahuenga Blvd. near Barham Blvd. It has been somewhat modified from its original appearance in "Damnation Alley," with the enlargement of the driver and passenger side windows, and the removal of the flexible center section cover. The Landmaster was sold to a private owner in 2005, and is currently undergoing restoration to its original condition.

Since it has nothing to do with the novel, I've moved it here in case someone would like to merge it into the existing "Landmaster" secition in this article. -- Antepenultimate 01:34, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've merged that in with the Landmaster article. Mark Grant 17:07, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

OBJECTIVITY edit

"Roger Zelazny's original story of Damnation Alley was seriously compromised from the outset."

I realize fans of the original story hate that the film is so different. But using the phrase "seriously compromised" obviously conveys an opinion that the book was a superior work of art and that the film is somehow fundamentally inferior.
I'm sure that every movie based on a book has detractors that think the book was much better. But the wikipedia entries for those movies don't start out by stating that as a fact.
So how about:
"Roger Zelazny's original story of Damnation Alley was heavily revised for the film version."
That would read a little more NPOV.

Landmaster - cost to build edit

This article has the price to build the landmaster as being $300,000, but the Landmaster article has the price being $350,000. The Landmaster article has a scanned magazine article as the source. Tweisbach (talk) 09:58, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Alternate Title: "Survival Run" edit

An alternate title of DA was "Survival Run". 20th Century Fox officially changed the title of the movie to "Survival Run" for a short period of time in 1977, and changed it back before it was released.

(Google DA and "Survival Run" and it will return about 10,000 hits.)

(For example: http://futurofinale2088.blogspot.com/2012/11/survival-run-aka-damnation-alley.html)

The article should be edited to reflect this fact.

About the Centerfold edit

Diana House (January) Playboy 1976. When the cigarette ash falls onto the magazine and touches off the explosion. Ncsr11 (talk) 22:59, 14 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

It wasn't shown on regular broadcast television was it? Having just viewed the movie, via "FXM Retro", I think it is the first time that I've seen the magazines. But magazines or not, the smoker shouldn't have smoked in a non-smoking area, nor fallen asleep while smoking. Plus, why have bunks in a room with those gas tanks that leaked, and thus let the small fire cause the explosion? LeoStarDragon1 (talk) 12:29, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
