Prison-Industrial Complex Claims

edit

Dale M. Volker has been claimed to be benefitted by the euphemism of the "military-industrial complex." Although it is unclear what this actually refers to by its proponents, a simpler explanation is often the best. Dale Volker fought in partnership with a number of other Republican Majority Senators to keep prisons in their respective districts open. His reasons, as can be testified to by a number of public hearings held on the issue, were few but rational. In addition to preserving the much-needed jobs in his district, a rock of stability for otherwise poor rural communities, these prisons were often near capacity. Furthermore, it would have cost more to close the prisons in a single year for the whole of New York State than to convert them to drug rehabilitation or treatment centers, or simply to keep them open. Furthermore, closing jails without addressing the underlying issues was seen as a drastic and uninformed step to take. The prison closings were an initiative of former Governor Spitzer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Entor (talkcontribs) 15:42, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
