Etymology (title added)

edit

"The Romans called the drink cerevisia from which the name 'Service' is derived (as well as the Spanish word cerveza, beer)."

I could't find any source for that!--85.25.106.238
That's because it's not true, as far as I can tell. Here's the real etymology. Thanks for spotting that. —Keenan Pepper 14:31, 11 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

status

Can we add the IUCN status for S.domestica to the taxobox, i'm assuming its Least Concern? 84.9.33.255 03:07, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Correct name

edit

According to The Plant List, the correct of this species should be Cormus domestica. MKwek (talk) 06:46, 30 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

The newest version of The Plant List now lists Sorbus domestica as the accepted name and Cormus domestica as a synonym, so we don't need to change anything. Kavindad1 (talk) 08:57, 26 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Other uses

edit

Should some mention be made of this tree as the source of wood used for tool making? See the catalogue here: [1] where various planes for instance are shown as being made from 'cormier' which is the wood of this tree. I have two of these planes (photos available if desired) and can testify to the density and hardness of the wood. Given the pricing in the catalogue, where cormier planes are shown as 50% more expensive than hornbeam equivalents, it must have been greatly valued, and this use would evidently have been of commercial importance.
