Now that we removed the plural in the lead, should it be moved to the singular Concentrated photovoltaic ? I also noticed that Concentrating photovoltaic is free. We could do that move without admin intervention, or set up a redirect. I do not have strong feelings either way, but I suppose the "ed" might be somewhat more precise since the concentration seems to be done by some other material generally, not the photovoltaic material necessarily. If we like the lead we should probably call it "Concentrated photovoltaic technology". However, I think we should reword the lead: "Concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) uses ..." Jojalozzo 18:15, 15 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Concentrator photovoltaics edit

Recent edits were made to change the name of the topic from "concentrated photovoltaics" to "concentrator photovoltaics" based on recommendations of an "International Electrotechnical Commission CPV Working Group for International CPV standards". a) Can anyone provide sources for this? b) If we had sources should we do more than mention this recommendation somewhere in the article? Jojalozzo 03:57, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I am a researcher in this field, and a member of IEC TC82 WG7 and while this is a common confusion, the correct term is "Concentrator Photovoltaics". The photovoltaics are not "concentrated" (we don´t take some solar cells and somehow concentrate their essence (jk)). We take photovoltaics and place them under "concentrators" ie under optics that concentrate the light. And it is certainly not concentratING photovoltaics which would imply that the PV itself was somehow concentrating the light. here are some sources: IEC 62108,Fraunhofer ISE and NREL Publish Report on the Status of Concentrator Photovoltaics,The 11th International Conference on Concentrator Photovoltaics --Arrayofeels (talk) 11:35, 6 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the feedback and sources, Arrayofeels. Maybe Jojalozzo would like to reconsider and rename the article based on the available information. As I see, he was already involved in the article's naming and discussed and voted upon some years ago (above). So I leave that up to him and his expertise. Just as a side note: this report, p.26] uses the term High Concentration Photovoltaics (HCPV) and not (High) Concentrator Photovoltaics as suggest above. So the confusion even seems to include the Fraunhofer institue itself. Cheers, -- Rfassbind -talk 13:40, 6 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Since the release of the joint NREL/Fraunhofer report on the CURRENT STATUS OF CONCENTRATOR PHOTOVOLTAIC (CPV) TECHNOLOGY, there is no doubt that "concentrator" PV is to be preferred over "concentrated" PV. I already requested to move the article -- Rfassbind -talk 13:05, 3 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Left over content edit

The following image and some related text might be useful. It had erroneously been added to the CSP article some time ago -- Rfassbind -talk

total spectrum solar concentrator – To optimize the efficiency of solar power, a total spectrum solar concentrator is used. The suns rays are first concentrated using parabolic mirrors or a fresnel lens, and then spread out into a light spectrum via a prism. Each different part of the spectrum is aimed at a solar cell manufactured to operate most efficiently in that wavelength range. This technology has multiple problems, most notably in that it results in only marginal gains in efficiency.[citation needed]

Solar insolation edit

The term "solar insolation" is redundant. Only "insolation" is needed. Note that the letters "sol," meaning sun, appear in both words. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.142.113.201 (talk) 01:42, 1 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
