History of coaching and evidence

Can we add some sections on the history of coaching (e.g. probably from human potential movement in the 1950s USA; self-actualisation), current industry and trends, key influencers, and theory (or lack of it) and evidence ... ref: Senior, Jeanette. "Life coaching: Origins, direction and potential risk–why the contribution of psychologists is needed more than ever." The Coaching Psychologist 3, no. 1 (2007): 19-22. That article is a bit dated now. But as it stands this page does not go into any theory or evidence of efficacy. It just goes directly into applications. Notgain (talk) 10:01, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

Its a bit of a hotch potch of ideas but it seem that coaching emerged from the human development and self-actualization (Maslow)... The following are possible topics for this page:

• Historical influencers: Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegi...
• Humanistic psychology, Self-actualization
• Humanistic psychologist Person-centered therapy and unconditional positive regard
• Personal development
• Rapport and empathy, especially non-verbal rapport
• I've seen coaching described as a sort of applied Positive psychology
• Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi flow
• Lev Vygotsky and Zone of proximal development
• Albert Bandura, especially observational learning
• Fritz Perls and Gestalt theory (e.g. playing chairs)
• Solution focussed brief therapy...
• Influence of Milton Erickson, and the group at the Mental Research Institute at Palo Alto – Gregory Bateson, Donald deAvila Jackson, Paul Watzlawick, John Weakland, Virginia Satir, Jay Haley, Richard Fisch,...
• The current coaching industry, e.g. Anthony Robbins and others. Would be interesting to know the size of the industry by region.
• Certification, associations, efficacy,...
• What are the minimum qualifications required in different regions?
• How is coaching delivered? Is it more effective face-to-face or is online just as good?

Notgain, It would be interesting to add some of these insofar as there is credible evidence to link them. There is increasingly research and academic study in coaching, and that may be a start for adding to this article. FULBERT (talk) 10:51, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

Propose a section on 'History of coaching'. I propose some major themes:

• early motivation / American self-help authors in the early 1900s (Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and influence People, ...),
• human potential movement,
• T-groups/EST in the 1970s
• mass marketing (reaching estimated 100 million Americans) of coaching and human performance systems in Anthony Robbins infomericals in the 1980s, e.g. GRANBERRY, MICHAEL (October 1, 1991). "A True Believer : Tony Robbins Has Attracted Converts--and Critics--to His Positive-Thinking Empire". Los Angeles Times. ISSN 0458-3035. Retrieved July 2, 2017.
• Timothy Gallwey's The Inner Game of X (Tennis) and sports coaching metaphors in executive coaching
• GROW, a blend of AA and sports coaching.

This outline is largely consistent with 'The Hidden History Of Coaching By Wildflower, Leni' [1] which is already cited in the article. Notgain (talk) 03:44, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Not primarily about sports

@Ashad Rector, Desideria24, Gs3654, and Jroberts119: I see you are associated with a Wikipedia:Wiki Ed assignment for a sport psychology course. I hope you know that this article is not primarily about sports; it is about coaching in general, as opposed to sports coaching specifically. If you are already aware of that, then please carry on. Well, I consider edit warring to force in the opinions of trade groups like the ICF to be unhelpful, especially considering the long-term promotional campaign being waged by single purpose accounts on their behalf. MrOllie (talk) 14:53, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

ICF has 50.000+ active members, I don't know that we have any other international body who is more credible than them about coaching. Please cite any other organization who has another views on the definitions if you aim for more objectivity.

I am not aware of promotional campaigns or SPAs about this matter, I act on my own as a professional coach.

These are more than just press statements to be fair.

Calling for more 2nd sources is not bad, I've just found some really nice article compare all sorts of definitions and even promoting coming up with your own as a coach.

Per WP:COI you shouldn't be editing this article at all, let alone edit warring to add mentions of the ICF and links to their website. MrOllie (talk) 16:16, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

@MrOllie Just to state the facts: I am not and employee of ICF, nor paid by ICF in any way, nor my edits were biased in any way towards ICF.

Without evidence to actual conflict of interest you are displaying a serious error in judgement and discriminating people based on their profession. This is a serious violation of not just Wikipedia rules but general community ethics such as avoid assuming bad faith in advance.

By the way, I feel really uncomfortable and disappointed right now.
