About

edit

The beginning of the article is missing some information about the origins of Cathedral Catholic High School. It was originally Cathedral Girls' High School, founded in 1943. The information I would like to add is from the CCHS website. I would like to add: "Cathedral Girls’ High School, located in downtown San Diego, was founded in 1943. In 1970 Cathedral Girls’ merged with University High School, founded in 1957, on the campus in Linda Vista. In 1986, University High School became University of San Diego High School"[1] 2600:1700:8A91:A60:3935:CF74:D7A9:4702 (talk) 17:30, 21 September 2018 (UTC)VGReply

Merge

edit

29 Oct 2007: There have been several attempts to combine (merge) the articles for Cathedral Catholic High School and the University of San Diego High School. These articles should not be merged, because although they are the same school, they each tell their own history and story.

Facilities

Facilities section should be expanded to include more than a picture. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Junipersgrao (talkcontribs) 19:19, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Anonymous Student Opinion

edit

Wikipedia is not a rating or classification site for different schools or any other organization. It's supposed to be an unbiased encyclopedic description. Anyone's opinions about the subject would better be placed on some other website, like maybe www.greatschools.net. See WP:NOT for further information. --Eric Bekins 22:16, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Someone tried to delete the previous comment. The talk page doesn't need to be altered unless there is some very offensive language, and even then it's probably questionable. This isn't as tightly edited as the main article. So if you have something to say, or disagree with a previous comment, just say so! --Eric Bekins 21:33, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Expressed "ownership" and self promotional advertising format

edit

This article is written much more like an self advertisment than an encyclopedia article. I was tempted to add the warning tag but refrained from doing so at this time. I did remove some of the more serious issues of the use of "Our school"; "We" when referring to the school. See WP:NPOV amd Wikipedia:Manual of Style Dbiel (Talk) 21:11, 5 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually my changes got lost in an edit conflict with User:AngelOfSadness which actually deleted the entire section that I had edited listing the following edit summary: (removed section as it was completely unsourced and was written without a NPOV) I do have to support his deletion of the section but felt that I would try a less radical approach first. policy

edit

can someone mention the policy that only a girl and a boy can go to prom together and if you want to go with the same sex you need to sign a slip that says you are gay that goes on your official record!!!

No, because that is not true.

this is definatly a great school with a beautiful campus and terrific athletics. My favorite of all the schools I have been to. i feel this school will definatly prepare me for colledge. If you are thinking about sending your child here, i definately would. That is the right decision!! go CCHS!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.88.24.89 (talk) 06:46, 8 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

What does the previous comment have to do with anything? And the policy they have is true! Eragon123123 (talk) 19:54, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Tone / Advertising

edit

This article still suffers in most paragraphs from writing that seems biased and often seems like advertising or promotional material to promote the school. Someone needs to do some rewriting to improve it. AliveFreeHappy (talk) 07:19, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've attempted to do some of this, and also particularly rewrote the sports section to be less time-specific. 68.6.178.220 (talk) 19:16, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Scott Peterson

edit

It seems to me that Scott Peterson is an alumnus of University of San Diego High School, not Cathedral, since Cathedral did not exist when he graduated in 1990. Elizium23 (talk) 03:08, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have removed the entire section, with the above rationale, and also because the two other people listed are not notable enough to have a Wikipedia article. Cathedral has only been open seven years, it might take some time to develop some truly notable alumni. Elizium23 (talk) 03:16, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of "Dons Football Season 2011" paragraph

edit

Here is the text from the paragraph (NPV violations in bold):

The Cathedral Catholic Dons football team won their 5th consecutive CIF Division III title against the Olympian Eagles at Qualcomm Stadium on December 5, 2011. The Dons beat the Eagles in a dominating performance 41-0. The Dons had a first round bye to later meet the Lincoln Hornets and the Point Loma Pointers who they beat to make it to "The Q." Stellar athletic plays made by the Dons offensive players and a shutout posted by the physical All-County Dons defense helped them succeed in winning their 5th title. How to treat alumni?

edit

This was discussed here some years ago: how to handle alumni of University of San Diego High School? There is an extensive list of alumni at the USDHS article; some, but not all, of them are also listed at the CCHS article. The above discussion from 2012, involving only two people, decided that only CCHS alums should be listed here, but that has not been universally observed. I think we should have a discussion here and reach a consensus about the treatment of alumni. I am a San Diegan but not an alum. I think alums and non-alums alike should have input on this question, but I would like to hear some opinions and discussion before making my own recommendation. -- MelanieN (talk) 19:31, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Here are some options:

  • Option A: List only CCHS alumni here, and USDHS alumni only at that article.
  • Option B: List USDHS alumni both places and CCHS alumni here.
  • Option C: List all alumni here, without distinguishing them as CCHS or USDHS. At the USDHS article, have a link to this list.
  • Option D: List all alumni here under separate subsections: USDHS alumni and CCHS alumni. At the USDHS article, have a link to this list.

    • Or option E, we merge the two articles at the current school name, and redirect the historic school to it. It's the same school....just changed location and name. That's what should be done IMO. The school isn't the building, it's the institution. John from Idegon (talk) 20:37, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
      • I'm doing some digging for sources, but so far I am also leaning to Option E We definitely need to be consistent. If this is one school which moved and was renamed then we have one article and one list of alumni (I see no issue in specifying which of the two names a particular alumnus attended under. We do this with other articles). The articles will need to be merged. If, on the other hand, these are two different schools, then we need two separate articles and two separate lists of alumni. No mention of the other school is required other than a short "School X closed in such a such a year when it was replaced by School B".
      • Somewhat confusingly the Cathedral Catholic High School profile states"Cathedral Catholic High School was founded in 2005 (formerly University of San Diego High School, founded in 1957)" [1] Meters (talk) 08:11, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
        • Two sources: "University of San Diego High School (these days it’s Cathedral Catholic)"[2] but not a great ref as it's a personal reminiscence., and "University of San Diego High School relocated and became Cathedral Catholic High School in 2005."[3] Unfortunately this one is somewhat ambivalent about the issue as it also states that that the incoming principal (in 2015) would be the third principal.
        • University of San Diego High School is clear that this was the same school., although it needs sourcing. The diocese planned to relocate the school, and the faculty, administration and students moved to the new location en masse.
        • The internet archive shows that the University of San Diego High School's webpage on Aug 28, 2005 stated "The University of San Diego High School has moved to the new Cathedral Catholic High School campus in Del Mar."[4] By Sept 9, 2005 the University of San Diego High School's webpage was redirected to Cathedral Catholic High School's page.[5]
        • I think a merge of the two articles is required. Meters (talk) 08:37, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

I think the two of you are correct. I should have thought of this myself; I was focusing on one small aspect of the fact that there are two articles, without thinking of the Gordian knot solution to the problem. I am willing to do the merge but it might be a few days before I can undertake it. Meanwhile any additional sourcing to either article would be appreciated. BTW I see that somebody has tagged most of the alums at USDHS with "citation needed"; is that really a requirement, that every single alum needs a reference? I have seen that at some college articles, but rarely. -- MelanieN (talk) 15:56, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Please by all means MelanieN merge them. There appears to be some old resistance to that above, but it doesn't phrase the resistance in any policy based language. So I'd say BEBOLD but be prepared to have to defend your changes at RM. As far as attendance citations go: Technically, they are required, but practically, referenced content tying the individual to the school in their bio will suffice. If you want to work on the merged article in a sandbox, I'll be happy to help as much as I can. My wiki-time is pretty limited these days. John from Idegon (talk) 18:28, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'll let you know when I launch it. As for "old resistance" - I get the feeling that no interested parties (i.e. alumni or students) have looked at either of these articles in years. You think I should do an RM before implementing the merge? -- MelanieN (talk) 19:19, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
We have 3 very experience editors who all agree that a merge is appropriate. It appears that there should never have been two articles. Let's just do the merge to this article. If there had been a previous discussion I'd open an RM, but despite the talk page thread I'm not seeing any serious previous attempt at, or discussion of, merging the articles. The 2007 incident was more of a slash-and-burn blanking of this article than a merge attempt. Meters (talk) 20:33, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, please. BEBOLD! John from Idegon (talk) 22:09, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

OK, but I've changed my mind about a sandbox. It would royally mess up the attribution and history to have three pages involved; as it is we are going to need a history merge after we complete the merge and redirect the USDHS article. I propose that we just do it at the CCHS article, a little at a time, with appropriate edit summary where needed ("material copied from the article University of San Diego High School"). I'm going to add some sourcing to USDHS before I start, however. -- MelanieN (talk) 22:52, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

BTW this page definitively answers our question about alumni. CCHS greets graduates of both predecessor schools as alumni. -- MelanieN (talk) 22:59, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict)Good looking out there. That had crossed my mind too. I'll review the target article for needed updates to standard stuff, and do the layout groundwork for the alumni section. If we are talking a lot of alumni, this would be as good a time as any to spin off the notable list (which could also acknowledge both schools in the title). John from Idegon (talk) 23:06, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
There, I've gotten most of the history into the CCHS article, and pruned some puffery. If you want to merge the alumni that would be great. My vote is to remove the "CN" tags and keep them all. Most high school articles are not that picky about their alumni sections. I don't think there are enough of them to spin off to a separate article, do you? We are still way short of independent sources. I was hoping to pick up lots from the archives of the San Diego Union Tribune, but their archives seem pretty minimal. -- MelanieN (talk) 01:50, 8 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'll do some work on it tomorrow. Meters (talk) 05:10, 8 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
I've moved the alumni and added sources wherever I could find them. I chose to leave it as separate subsections for the two names/locations. Meters (talk) 08:08, 9 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Drug dealing incident

edit

It would seem that the drug dealing incident is worth including in this article. The reference indicates that students of the school were directly involved. I think we can find a more neutral heading name. Elizium23 (talk) 19:50, 4 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Student involved in the dealing, and apparently a the school (or at least to the students)so I'm inclined to agree that it can be included, but not as written. It needs a neutral heading (as Elizium23 pointed out) and mention of the direct connection to the school. We would not include this if it were just an incident involving the parent of a student. I don't think we should name the parent. Meters (talk) 20:13, 4 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
In 2018, a mother of a Cathedral Catholic student and her boyfriend pleaded guilty to charges of selling illegal drugs to minors, and employing her daughter to do so. The mother was sentenced to 11 years and 8 months in prison for selling marijuana, Xanax, alcohol, nicotine, and other prescription drugs to clients, including other students at Cathedral Catholic. [1] [2]Elizium23 (talk) 20:40, 4 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Looks good. Meters (talk) 20:46, 4 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I disagree. Leave it out. The high school is only peripherally involved, and this story has not received much coverage even in the local press. Over recent decades there have been drug busts at almost every local high school, but we don't include them in the Wikipedia article unless there is something unusual about them. On the other hand, if you search News for Cathedral Catholic today, you find scores of stories about the recent murder of a Cathedral Catholic teacher. [1] I'm not necessarily suggesting to include that either, as there doesn't appear to be a direct connection to the school, but that has a much better claim to inclusion than a 2018 drug bust. -- MelanieN (talk) 20:55, 4 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

On second thought I have to agree with User:MelanieN. While the proposed version is better than what we had, it still still does not belong. For the last 50 years or so there probably has not been a large North American high school without a student pusher. It's not worth mentioning. The fact that a parent of a student was the supplier is not enough. Meters (talk) 23:56, 11 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
