A fact from Cardiff Kook appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 5 October 2010 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:

Most notable vandalization
editThe article states that the shark vandalization is the "most notable," and at the time that was probably accurate since it was so widely reported, but another spectacular sculpture was recently put up around the Kook, the pterodactyl/pteranodon scene. Since the Kook is now known for being pranked, the vandalization section is of particular note. What would define a vandalization as being the most notable? If it's number of mentions in the press, I believe the shark is still the most notable, but multiple articles about the pterodactyl/pteranodon prank claim it's even more impressive (which is subjective, of course). Vandalism
The article states that "The statue has been repeatedly vandalized ..." This is not accurate or even remotely factual. Wiktionary defines "Vandalism" as "Willful damage or destruction of any property with no other purpose than damage or destruction of said property." The fact is that there has never been any damage or destruction of the statue nor has there ever been any attempt to damage or destroy the statue. Rather, the statue has become a canvas where many creative atists and wanabee artists in the local community express their communion with the surfing culture and their community with a heathy sense of humor and creativity - always well received and enjoyed by the community. The false and inapropriate claim of "Vandalism" needs to be deleted from the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.176.210.152 (talk) 06:52, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but you're mistaken. The Kook has, in fact, been seriously damaged by the repeated pranks and required thousands of dollars worth of repairs. Here is a North County Times article about the substantial repairs and some of the costs. This article states that the damage was caused by people decorating the statue, that the damage began right away, and that entire pieces of the statue have been ripped off. Given the activities that gave rise to the damage, the term "vandalism" may be debatable, but it is not inaccurate, no matter how popular the activities may be. (For the record, I certainly do not disapprove.) Verminjerky (talk) 13:34, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Notability/hangon rationale

- Well, I'm sure. But you need to source your material, add some more info, and at least provide some semblance of a reason why this is in any way notable.SteelIronTalk 12:28, 26 September 2010 (UTC)

Additional Location Information
editWhen speaking with a pair of tourists this week, I was asked exactly where the Cardiff Kook was located. They had visited this page, expecting to find a street location, and were frustrated by their inability to find the statue. Would the addition of cross-streets, as verified by Google Maps, remain within the scope? South Coast Highway at Chesterfield Drive, 33.019088,-117.282455, should anyone agree with me.
