1957 reference

edit

I have bought a publicity leaflet (issued by the now practically defunct British Railways in 1957) giving the locations of Camping coaches in that year. So I could place the fact that a station had a camping coach in the relevant articles. Two questions, though; 1 Before I spend time doing this does anyone else think the effort of any value? 1 Before I start any views on whether it should be Camping coach or Camping Coach?Britmax 12:37, 7 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think a list would be useful as it would show how widespread they were distributed. A similar list from the late 1930s would similarly add value, although I would not want one for every year!
The capitalisation should, IMHO, be Camping coach for the article and camping coach if it appears in a sentence, e.g. The camping coach at Cheddar was...

Thanks for the feedback Geof! I thought of simply expanding the article on Camping coaches to include the list but am reluctant for two reasons.

1 It looks like wholesale lifting of copyright material, even though I am unlikely to see action from an organisation that is now only a residual body over a service they have barely provided in my lifetime.

2 The references may be confused with the sites still operating. Any thoughts? Britmax 17:12, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Not being a copyright lawyer, my thoughts are purely my own, but I would consider the information contained in a publicity leaflet would be available for publicising, even if the publicity is not that originally conceived by the BRB. While UK copyright law would preclude copying of an image of the leaflet, it does allow for an author to reuse the facts in their own original way. If the list was in a different order and added new information - e.g. Wiki links to station and county articles - then I should not expect any problems.
Once the list is here then it will serve as a prompt to other contibutors to add missing station articles.
If you were to add a line to each station article, including creating new articles for most of the closed stations, then I feel the information would be insufficient. In the context of any particular station article, I feel that it would be better if we could state that, e.g. Troy Town railway station had a camping coach for hire from 1934 to 1939 and again from 1947 to 1963.
As for clarity, I would propose that the list goes at the bottom of the article with a Level 2 heading such as Stations that once had camping coaches, and then a Level 3 heading stating the year.Geof Sheppard 13:04, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your thought Geof I'll give them some thought but do seem to have talked myself into a job. Britmax 21:18, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've added some station names from the leaflet referred to above on the grounds suggested by Geof, that using the information in this way, as a list of stations with links etc, is reasonable. Does anyone think I should single column them or would that make the article too long with too much white space? In 1957 you could have had the coach at Blue Anchor for a week at the height of summer for... £11 10 shillings (Yes £11.50!). Britmax 21:23, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Having given the matter some thought I've added pipe links to all the stations in the list (except for the ones Geof did, thanks, by the way, Geof!) This is deliberately intended to highlight the stations without articles for the attention of people who like writing them. Or masochists who don't like writing them. A caveat should be added about article names being slightly different from those given here and so not being picked up. Otherwise carry on. Britmax 12:54, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
