English?

edit

Was it written by English or not. First paragraph makes no sense unless one already knows the history of the song. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.165.188.30 (talk) 12:21, 30 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Lyrics definitely written by English, with music by Richard Kerr. ChrisMalme (talk) 14:39, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
"Riding on a country bus no one ever noticed us", only rhymes in english. The background of the song was that a glass of whiskey, referred to here as "brandy", should be more valuable than any woman.--2A02:908:1571:6DC0:6540:608A:C9F2:D5A7 (talk) 07:27, 9 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal

The result was no merge. --Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 12:01, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

All information on cover versions of songs have typically on Wikipedia been included as part of the same article, so I have proposed that Mandy (Westlife Version) be merged here. Thoughts? --Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 04:45, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, that is true, but considering all the information now contained in Mandy (Westlife Version) has been added to this article quite a number of times (including the nav box no less) and has been terribly overpowering to this article which is not about Westlife (a simple mention has not been good enough for the fans of Westlife), my thoughts are to leave the new Westlife version article intact and not merge. I think they would be happier for it anyway. Maybe a disambig statement on each? ♫ Cricket02 (talk) 04:49, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Cricket02, what you say makes sense, and I admit I was remiss in not looking carefully at the page history. Thanks for your comments. I'll go ahead and close this, especially seeing as User:Longyuano has already declared the discussion over. --Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 12:01, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cover versions do not get their own article

edit

This is a long standing practice and I can give about a billion examples. There is no reason why this song or Westlife's version gets a special page. - eo (talk) 16:15, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Likewise, shouldn't this article be titled "Brandy (song)" given that "Mandy" is the name given to cover versions only? Jake Lancaster (talk) 10:56, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Westlife

edit

Westlife should not be such a prominent part of this page, as this is not an original Westlife song. A simple mention that it was re-recorded by them without all the cover art etc. should be fine as it is with all the multiple others who recorded it as well, I don't understand why this content keeps getting replaced. -- Dougie WII (talk) 16:33, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I agree that the Westlife version takes up a lot of the page, but the resolution should be to do research about the original (and other version) and add it here, not to split the article. Either that, or place an "expand" tag in the first section so that someone else with the knowledge can flesh out the first half of the article. Don't you think? - eo (talk) 16:36, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
No I don't, this appears just to be a copycat band, I don't see why it needs anything more than a simple note that they rerecorded the song. It is not their song. -- Dougie WII (talk) 16:39, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
It is not THER song (i.e. they did not write it), however their version is notable. It's a UK number one single, it most definitely deserves an infobox and a small write up at the very least. The article really needs to be balanced out. The Manilow version needs its own infobox and an expansion. - eo (talk) 16:41, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, I wasn't the first person to remove that stuff, and I don't think it should be there as it seems like advertising but let's see if anyone else wants to discuss it. -- Dougie WII (talk) 16:46, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK. In the meantime, Im adding an infobox for Manilow. His versions is at least as notable as Westlife's, and probably equally as sucky. - eo (talk) 16:49, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • I propose restoration of Mandy (Westlife Version) or cut down to a simple mention within this article. There should have been consensus to merge back into this article. It was separated for a reason, that being this article is not about Westlife and should have nothing more than a mention of their cover version in the article, not the obscene infobox and navbox. If they should have it, then all covers should - and then how would that look. Even more obscene. ♫ Cricket02 (talk) 20:24, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
The article is not about Westlife, the article is about the song, and the Westlife recording is part of the song's history. If their version was, say, an album track or a B-side that would be one thing, but the song was released as a single and hit number one in the UK, which makes their recording very notable. Why then would it not be entitled to an infobox at the very least? There are song articles with cover versions (sometimes more than one) all over Wikipedia, why would this song be treated differently? Note also that the "obscene" nav box is collapsible. - eo (talk) 20:32, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tempo of original?

edit

Article states that original Scott English version was "fast-tempo", and comments that "Manilow originally recorded it as an up-tempo bubblegum pop tune similar to English's original, but he and the producer reportedly hated the way it turned out; thus, he sang it as a ballad and was much more pleased with the results."

If you listen to both versions (Scott English's recording can be readily found on YouTube), they are almost identical in both tempo and style. Manilow's version was very much a cover of the original recording, albeit with the change of title. ChrisMalme (talk) 14:43, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have actually heard the original first take of "Mandy." It is not up-tempo or bubblegum at all. It is much like the version that was released, but with just piano and a slow drum beat, no orchestra or other instruments. bellminer (talk) 21:01, 4 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well if there's something factually incorrect in the article, be WP:BOLD and fix it. Preferably citing source(s) if possible. -- Dougie WII (talk) 05:36, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Selection ?

edit

This article frequently refers to the song as a selection - a usage I don't recall seeing anywhere else. Is that normal - or some strange quirk of this article ? -- Beardo (talk) 03:23, 24 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

I was going to ask the same thing. Maybe we should change the title of the page to "Mandy (selection)". --345Kai (talk) 19:44, 31 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps we should add a ==Popular culture== section?

edit

Perhaps we should add some mention of the role the song played in the television series Angel?  (YouTube.com, Buffy.Wikia.com.)  allixpeeke (talk) 02:10, 27 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Mandy (Scott English and Richard Kerr song)Brandy (Scott English and Richard Kerr song) – Tough call here, but I believe this move should be done. The most popular recordings of this song, most notably the one by Barry Manilow, are titled "Mandy", but the original song that was recorded was titled "Brandy". For that reason, I don't think that WP:COMMONNAME applies in the case of this article's title since from precedence I have seen, the title of the song goes to the original recording or the original performer of the song when a song has a/multiple cover(s). And finally, the current title is misleading since the songwriters in the disambiguator, Scott English and Richard Kerr, never released a song titled "Mandy" ... since it was titled "Brandy". Orphaned references in Brandy (Scott English and Richard Kerr song)

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Brandy (Scott English and Richard Kerr song)'s orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "uksales":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 11:52, 4 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
