Confusing introduction?

The introductory paragraph strikes me as confusing. The fact is that there have been, to date, three successive bishoprics of Brechin: Catholic, Reformed, Anglican. So to state that "the Bishop . . . based at Dundee" is untrue unless it is immediately made clear that this is ONLY true of the third (SEC) bishopric. The second sentence, while strictly true, is also confusing in that it says that "Brechin Cathedral, Brechin" (hold on! Didn't we just say the Diocese of Brechin is based at Dundee?) "is a parish church (what?) of the established (presbyterian) Church of Scotland". No explanation of why a cathedral is a parish church, nor what 'established' or 'presbyterian' might mean, the latter especially in relation to a bishopric or a diocese, nor why "Church of Scotland" should be relevant, even though the first sentence only applies (unstated) to the SEC. The rest of the introduction triews to add explanations and context, but I don't feel it is sufficient. I shall construct what I feel is a better intro and post it here shortly so all can see what I mean. ShropshirePilgrim (talk) 12:06, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

Here is a draft of a new proposed introduction:-

The Bishop of Brechin is a title held successively, since c. 1150: (firstly) by bishops of the Catholic church until the Reformation of 1560; (secondly) by bishops of the Church of Scotland until that church declared itself presbyterian in 1689; and (thirdly) by bishops of the Scottish Episcopal Church since then.

The seat of the bishops of Brechin until 1689 was Brechin Cathedral which then became the High Kirk of Brechin in the (now presbyterian) Church of Scotland (although still often referred to as Brechin Cathedral). That building ceased to function as a place of worship in November 2021.

The current bishop of Brechin leads the Diocese of Brechin in the Scottish Episcopal Church, with its cathedral in Dundee.

NOTE

I have omitted the reference to "the established (presbyterian) Church of Scotland" since the CoS was disestablished in 1929. Similarly I have omitted any reference to the supposed origins of the early monastic community at Brechin as hardly relevant to the bishopric. The monastic community is alraedy covered in the historical material in the Wikipedia article on Brechin Cathedral.

Unless there are cogent arguments against my proposed re-write I shall re-edit the introduction on these lines around the end of April 2023. Comments are welcome! ShropshirePilgrim (talk) 17:10, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
