Sidebar changes edit

I updated the city council and added the population changes as reported in the 2020 Census, using the land area already in the sidebar. I dunno where to look to see if that's changed. Applejuicefool (talk) 02:32, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Photo edit

Nice picture, Applejuicefool! That adds a lot to the article. OhNoitsJamieTalk 03:31, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks :) Applejuicefool 03:35, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I will try to get a new photo uploaded soon. The "Old Settles Hotel" in the current one has now been lavishly refurbished and reopened and the pic could do with an update. There's construction on the Municipal Auditorium, so I may wait until that is complete, or just take from a different angle. Applejuicefool (talk) 02:07, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Native Americans? edit

Noticed just now the discrepancy between Shawnee in the intro and Pawnee in my history addition. I got Pawnee from the Handbook of Texas Online. I did a quick web search on Shawnee and Big Spring, and sure enough, the Big Spring City WP says Shawnee. I went back and double checked the HTO, and it indeed says Pawnee. Wikipedia shows little maps of areas where each nation was located; neither is right on top of Big Spring (which the Comanche are) but the Pawnee looks closer (Shawnee are up near New England area). Not sure what to do about this, ATM. Any ideas? Applejuicefool 03:35, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

The HTO is usually right...let me go get my texas history books and check. pschemp | talk 03:37, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I will write an email to the city to see what the source of their info is. Applejuicefool 03:38, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Where's this map on wiki? Joe I 03:42, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
The maps are on the articles for the various Indian tribes. Do a search on the name of the tribe. Applejuicefool 03:44, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
DOH! The HTO Big Spring article says Shawnee! The HTO Howard County article says Pawnee! Applejuicefool 03:43, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I wondered about that too, but the Shawnee article does mention this: Several hundred Missouri Shawnee left the United States in 1815 together with some Delaware people and settled in Texas, which was at that time controlled by Spain. This tribe became known as the Absentee Shawnee; they were once again expelled in 1839 after Texas had gained its indepedence three years earlier. I've been unable to find any mention of where in Texas they lived before going back to Oklahoma. OhNoitsJamieTalk 03:48, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm thinking the Absentee Shawnees are probably closest to the truth. I found a similar article on http://www.tolatsga.org/shaw.html - dunno the sources for that article, though. They say the Shawnee were welcomed by the Spanish to serve as kind of a buffer between Mexico and the U.S. Applejuicefool 03:55, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
And yet HTO Howard County clearly mentions "Skidi Pawnees." Things that make you go hmmm... Applejuicefool

Portuguese! edit

Excellent! We now have a Big Spring stub in Portuguese! Applejuicefool 04:08, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jake Pickle edit

Why is there no mention of Jake Pickle who grew up in this area? Varun Rajendran

Refinery Explosion edit

Not sure hwo to add the information well, but this is the most up to date info out there: http://news.google.com/news?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUS249&q=Big+Spring+Texas+explosion&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wn 65.185.147.196 (talk) 17:11, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Been keeping my eye on it. It's the same information I have. Are you local? Jerry G. Sweeton Jr. (talk) 17:13, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Nope, out of Ohio, just saw it on CNN. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stepshep (talkcontribs) 18:21, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Education links? edit

Is there a reason to provide external links for Howard College and the school district, when these have Wikipedia articles? shouldn't we link to the Wikipedia articles, and then put the external links in those for people who want more info? Applejuicefool (talk) 14:35, 17 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Name edit

Unbelievable, but there's a BIG SPRING and then there's a tiny little spot in Eastern TX called BIG SPRINGS. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.253.78.21 (talk) 00:20, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I suppose this is possible, but I cannot find any reference to "Big Springs, Texas" anywhere online, nor does it appear in Wikipedia's list of communities in Rusk County, nor on the map available on Rusk County's website. I am going to delete the sentence from the article referencing Big Springs; please post a link to a site where I can confirm the existence of Big Springs, and we can put it back. Applejuicefool (talk) 18:53, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
The Rusk County town of Big Springs, Texas is located at 32.067386 N, 94.967440 W. It can be found by typing "Big Springs, Texas" into Google Earth. Leaflet (talk) 21:01, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Photo? edit

I can understand replacing my photo of the Municipal Auditorium with the Settles Hotel in the background as the title photo of the article. What I'm wondering is, why whoever did so could not at least include it in the gallery. There is no other photo in there showing the Municipal Auditorium... The Auditorium is still there... Applejuicefool (talk) 04:24, 19 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

NVM I fixed it. Applejuicefool (talk) 04:34, 19 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

The 2010 data should be added to or replace the 2000 info, shouldn't it? JeanEva Rose (talk) 16:16, 6 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sonny Dykes edit

I removed my cousin Sonny Dykes from the list of notable people. He might have lived briefly there while his Dad, Spike Dykes, was an assistant coach at Big Spring High School, but he's not really "from" Big Spring. Jonl (talk) 19:24, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sonny Dykes has this as a source for that claim. Do you have another source saying otherwise? mi1yT·C 19:32, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's possible that he was born in Big Spring while Spike was an assistant coach. He wouldn't have been there for long, though. However I suppose if he was born there, one could say he is "from" there. I concede the point. Jonl (talk) 19:22, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
