Blatant advertising

This article reads more like marketing copy for Bethel College than an objective encyclopedia article. I have flagged this article with the {{advert}} tag in hopes that someone will go through and clean it up. Emersonsteve (talk) 06:58, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

After further investigation, I found that the "marketing copy" was pasted directly from the Bethel College Web site. I removed the pasted content and the {{advert}} tag, and have instead reflagged this article as a stub. Emersonsteve (talk) 07:29, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Copyvio concern

Prior to the recent heavy reduction of the article, the history contained several paragraphs copied directly from the history page on the Bethel University website ( http://www.bethelu.edu/about/history)Naraht (talk) 18:55, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

I am not surprised. While I was reading it before cutting it down, it sounded like it was just copy and pasted as I found the pronoun "we" in a couple of places. I think I will go through what is left and check for any possible copyvios (looking now, the one sentence about the Log Cabin society is a definite copy from the university site). LlamaDude78 (talk) 11:44, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
Okay, so I cut out the obvious copy and pasted stuff. I am not sure about what is left in the article though. The main issue I am having with trying to expand this article is that it is real hard to find sources that is not coming directly from the university's website. LlamaDude78 (talk) 11:57, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Additional Sources

I think we can go with some portion of the article from bethel.edu, but I agree additional sources would be good.

Naraht (talk) 13:09, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

External Links

Regarding the external links that are being added into article space, is it neccessary? (I am not saying let's cut all of them out but at least minimalize them if they are needed). For instance, six buildings listed in a row under "History" all have external links to the same place. It just seems like overkill and looks clunky. WP:EL says external links should not be used in a body of an article so...what to do? Personally, I think they would be better suited for the external links section at the bottom. LlamaDude78 (talk) 18:56, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Consolidated in the EL, though there are those who would argue that more than one EL to a site is not appropriate. We'll go with this for now, I guess.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Naraht (talkcontribs) 14 August 2012

Biography of the President

Apart from this revision being a blatent copyright violation of this page a whole section dedicated to the biography of Dr Prosser seems like an attempt to advertise him. He might meet the notability guidelines himself and merit his own article but the way to do that is not to build it up here. NtheP (talk) 20:06, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

More Copyright Issues

  • Now that I finally see the citation for the Log Cabin section, the first and third sentences of the paragraph are copyright violations. It is an obvious copy from Bethel University's wesbite with minor rewording that does not clear the issue.
  • In addition, four of the purposes listed in the Alumni Garden section are also taken right from the website. I have (hopefully) remedied that by formatting it into a block quote. LlamaDude78 (talk) 12:07, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
I went ahead and reworded the two sentences I mentioned as it was only two sentences (I am not the best at paraphrasing so it might need some more grammtical fixes but at least it does not seem like a blantant copyvio now). LlamaDude78 (talk) 12:42, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Library and Renaissance Program Section Potential Issues

Here are some issues with the above sections as I don't have the time right now to go through it.

  • Library Section: The first and third sentence seems pointless and unnecessary as that is probably already understood by the fact that it is a university library. It does not add content that marks it different from any other library. Second sentence is fine but needs a citation though.
  • Renaissance Program: Again, uncited. And, why is the mention of the scholarship important? What does it contribute to the article? LlamaDude78 (talk) 20:38, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Looking at some other university WP pages, info that is generally included about a library, if it is mentioned, pertains to its history, architecture (if particularly unique or notable), its ranking nationwide if it has one or similar ranking, how many volumes of books it has, and etc...However, doing a search for coverage of this library in 3rd party sources, I cannot seem to find such information or any coverage that would really warrant the library to have its own section. A sentence or two in perhaps a section about the overall campus, probably. LlamaDude78 (talk) 11:59, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

I would like to know from some other editors whether it is relevant for the library to have its own section within this article and is it notable enough itself to even have its own section? I ask because I have not found any adequete coverage from third party sources regarding the library. Thanks, LlamaDude78 (talk) 16:39, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

There is no need for the library to have its own section unless there would be a very unique collection available.--Fox1942 (talk) 03:16, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
It does seem to be undue weight to me. - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 20:37, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
