Schotz, Benno (b. Arensburg 28 Aug.1891 [Julian calendar]. Date of birth may not be accurate, according to Schotz on p14 of his memoirs. Became well known as a sculptor. Is noted in several sources with regard to his interest in chess. Left Estonia for for Glasgow in 1913 (p32). His older brother Jeannot (later to be known by his Hebrew name Schachno) was a chess player (p49) and a member of the Bohemian CC in Glasgow. Introduced Benno to the club. Benno played for the Bohemian CC in Glasgow - see that club’s minute book in the Scottish Chess Association [now Chess Scotland] archive for references.

See, for example, British Chess Magazine [BCM] 1923, p436, where he played on board 63 in the West of Scotland team v the East. Also, BCM 1935, p74, where it shows him as a member of the Bohemian Richardson Cup team (spelling error in name). See also Glasgow Herald column 21 Jan 1935, when Schotz played for Bohemian CC in the Richardson Cup semi-final match v Glasgow (Bd4, loss to JB McGibbon).
