Is it Baptist?

No, it is not Babtist. It is a governmental hospital, part of the Harris County Hospital District. You may be thinking of Baylor, which is a babstist school, but is no longer connected with Baylor College of Medicine, which, by the way, only staffs Ben Taub, it doesn't own it.Mneumisi 16:05, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Controversy in creation of Ben Taub edit

The article is quite deficient on the creation of the hospital. I'd try to work some of the details into it, but I quit trying to edit Wikipedia insofar as their ongoing support of spammers offends me.

However, I will outline some of the details since as I recently came across an excellent source book called The Birth of the Texas Medical Center (by Fred Elliot, who was probably director of the TMC when they finally opened Ben Taub). Maybe someone else wants to follow up on it, but I don't care that much... In the index you will only find a couple of mentions of Ben Taub under that name, but most of the controversy is indexed under the topic of "city-county hospital debate". Some of the material about the Jefferson Davis Hospital is related to this topic, and there was also a mention of a special negro hospital, though it isn't indexed in any obvious way. Though much of the controversy involved control issues (with Baylor eventually winning), the real problem was the patients, as in indigent patients. No hurry to prevent poor folks from dying, but once the hospital was created, it became one of the busiest trauma wards in the nation. (The money had actually been available for some years before they smoothed out enough of the political problems to build it.)

Personal anecdote, so it probably can't be used in the article, but when I was in the service one of the fellow in my platoon showed me his massive Ben Taub scars from when he'd been shot in the gut. As he put it, if you're still alive when they get you to Ben Taub, then they aren't going to let you die. Pretty sure he was of Mexican descent, but I think most of the charity patients were African American, since there's a large district of poor black people near the TMC. 3rd Ward? 5th Ward? Anyway, they have LOTS of shootings and stabbings in Houston, and when there's no time to ask questions, they just run 'em over to Ben Taub. Shanen (talk) 01:03, 29 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
