Redirect edit

If I knew how to redirect, I would redirect searches for The Atlanta Compromise here. Can someone either tell me how to, or do it?--ViolinGirl 14:16, 4 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Shrinking article? edit

So is this version of the article better than the original which was at least twice as long? Jolomo 18:15, 3 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Seems the original was a bit quote-heavy. As the text of the speech is now hosted at Wikisource:Atlanta Compromise, it made sense to trim this article down a bit, to me at least.
That said, if you now find pertinent details missing, be bold and add them back in. jareha 18:37, 3 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Civil Rights? edit

Unless, I have my history wrong, although BTW's speech was a major moment in American Civil Rights, it was later criticized by intellectuals such as W.E.B. DuBois for being too lenient on segregation and Jim Crow. It wasn't radical enough... perhaps this issue should be addressed? Reaction edit

Can someone please add some information on reactions to the speech, both from back then and some contemporary analysis? Rm999 01:56, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'll poke around and see if there is anything that I can find. futurebird (talk)

Historical significance edit

This article is definitely missing the section on the Compromise of blacks in accepting Jim Crow and not pushing for Civil Rights while encouraging them to start as manual labor. Washington believed that higher education was not necessary yet, as the race had to be built up. DuBois vehemently opposed the compromise,

Agree. futurebird (talk) 19:43, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Name of article should be Atlanta Exposition Speech edit

The name of the article should not refer to the "Atlanta Compromise" speech since that term was used by people opposed to its principles. The article cannot be called "Atlanta Exposition" since that would refer to the exposition/exhibition itself. As the NAACP does, I have listed it as "Atlanta Exposition Speech".Keizers (talk) 16:30, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Merge with Atlanta Compromise edit

As far as I can tell, there's no reason for these to be two separate articles. They seem to have been separated based on the false idea that the Atlanta Compromise was some kind of formal agreement that took place as a result of the speech. (Here's the original version of the Atlanta Compromise article after it was changed from a redirect: [1]) That is false, and I've removed that language from the article, so I really don't think that there's any reason for keeping it as a separate article from the speech. To the extent that an "Atlanta Compromise" really did exist, it was just a societal consequence of this speech. Bueller 007 (talk) 17:12, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Merge Has no reason to be a separate article. Merge it. The helper5667 (talk) 01:46, 13 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Keep as is, "as a social consequence of this speech" accurately describes that these are two different topics (i.e. see the descriptor of this plaque). The request is also malformed as the 'merge' tag on the other page did not link to this discussion, so have removed the incomplete merge notice. Randy Kryn (talk) 16:19, 3 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
