Born in Canada or Kenya

edit

CNN contradicts this Wikipedia entry that claims that Ali Velshi was born in Canada. According to his bio on CNN [1], he was born in Kenya. Can this be clarified? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Atikokan (talkcontribs) 18:16, 26 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ali Velshi was born in 1969 (not 1968). This is confirmed from something he said about himself on his own show ("Velshi") on MSNBC on Oct. 24, 2020 at 9:18am EASTERN. Velshi said he was 11 years old in 1981 when his father ran for office in Canada. That would make a birth year of 1968 impossible, but 1969 very possible.Saty13 (talk) 02:02, 25 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Velshi is a muslim?

edit

A claim that someone is an adherent of a particular religion is a pretty significant claim. Where is the source for the claim that Velshi is a Muslim? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Penser (talkcontribs) 18:07, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

His name is undoubtedly of Muslim background and he is of Indian ethnic origin, though from Kenya. Whether he self-identifies as Muslim, or anything at all, is a different matter. My beef is with the "now destroyed Islamabad Marriott"? That's completely incorrect. The hotel is there! I have serious doubts about the personal bits in this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.71.158.114 (talk) 00:03, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

YES, Velshi is a muslim. Velshi has often self-described himself as follows: "Unlike Barack Obama, I actually am a Kenyan-born Muslim" including in this quote from his show "Velshi" airing on MSNBC on Oct. 24, 2020 at 9:18am EASTERN Saty13 (talk) 01:47, 25 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Nationality

edit

We call him Canadian. I just heard him say on tv that he is a naturalized American citizen. Can anyone find sourcing for one or the other? MelanieN alt (talk) 04:17, 4 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

I have a source (Velshi himself) confirming he is/was a naturalized Canadian citizen. (This does not preclude that he is not also an American citizen.) He was born in Kenya, raised in Canada after arriving there with his family at the approximate age of one (in 1970). Source is Ali Velshi talking about himself and his family on his own show, "Velshi" airing on MSNBC on Oct. 24, 2020 (at 9:18am EASTERN) Saty13 (talk) 01:56, 25 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Controversy?

edit

How is it a "controversy" when Fox News (May 29, 2020, the only source cited) attacks a journalist for a comment Fox disagrees with? Consider also what later emerged, that white provocateurs tried to spark vandalism and looting in Minneapolis ("Umbrella man") and arson (Boogaloo boi who traveled from Texas). Velshi's statement that the Black crowd seemed "mostly a protest" isn't fantasy but likely an accurate reflection of what he saw. HouseOfChange (talk) 14:47, 4 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Age of subject

edit

Recent edits have suggested that the subject's birthdate is 1969, as opposed to 1968. I haven't personally been over the sources in any detail, but this seems to have been a point of contention in the past (there is hidden language in the article saying not to change the 1968-1969 range without some discussion). So here's a new section where the matter can be discussed. I would suggest listing the main competing sources and then discussing whether any change is warranted.MinnesotanUser (talk) 00:57, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

That's not the only age-related question. If he graduated from Queens in 1994 as this article states, he would have received his degree (I assume a Bachelor's) when he was 25 or 26 -- which really seems unusually old by a few years. Are there some years missing? alacarte (talk) 22:52, 14 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Velshi is not a journalist

edit

Velshi hosts a political commentary show on MSNBC, and otherwise fills in as a guest host on other MSNBC political commentary shows. If he ever was a journalist, he isn't one now. A journalist reports news in a balanced manner. He does not do that. He provides his opinion. This article needs to be edited to reflect that. 67.149.59.18 (talk) 03:20, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

he most certainly is a journalist. if you have a source to back up your claim that he is no longer a working journalist, please supply it before changing to your considered opinion. thanks for helping Saintstephen000 (talk) 07:45, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, but calling Velshi a journalist is also an opinion. Please supply a source for him currently working as a journalist as opposed to providing political commentary. Pderos (talk) 02:11, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Saintstephen000 states: 'He most certainly is a journalist." Please provide a source. Pderos (talk) 03:46, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

It's not difficult to find reliable sources that refer to him as a journalist. Example. I can't find a source that states he is no longer a journalist. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 02:44, 10 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
That is not a reliable source establishing as fact that he is a journalist. Some random two-year old article referring to him that way is not a "source." You can say he studied journalism, has been recognized in the field in the past, etc. Those are facts. But whether he is currently a "journalist," as that term is commonly defined, finds no support here. Period. And it ignores what he primarily is known for, which is hosting a talk show. This aspect of the article is therefore not sourced. Pderos (talk) 16:17, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

If he isn't from Gujarat, why was he in the "People from Gujarat" category?
