Hello,
I'm Rocky C. Steele, the great great grandson of Alphonso Steele. I have done a lot of research on our family and especially Alphonso. In your article you state that Alphonso was next to the last survivor of the Battle of San Jacinto. I hate to split hairs but Alphonso was the last survivor of the battle itself. William Zuber, who lived another two years after Alphonso's death, did not take part in the battle itself and could not describe the battle as it took place. Mr. Zuber was too young to fight and Sam Houston assigned him to Rear Guard with the women, children, and livestock. The reason that Alphonso's portrait being one of five portraits that hangs in the Senate Chambers in Austin, Texas, is because is was the last living survivor.
