I am an owner of a 1972 LHD Montreal, and the rear 'seats' really aren't seats, they don't have seatbelts, they have cargo restraint straps. I cannot sit in them, they have zero leg room (not exaggeration, the backs of the front seats touch the rear 'seats'. "2+2" does not necessary mean that rear seats (or contraptions looking like seats) are actually usable for passenger transport - in certain markets they were installed as a means to reduce insurance premiums as pure 2-seaters were rated much higher. 2A02:560:4283:8A00:40A8:C22F:ABAF:9714 (talk) 01:56, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Rear/mid engine

A recent edit includes the often stated rumour that the prototype was rear engined, or that the Montreal was designed with this configuration in mind. According to designer Marcello Gandini, the Montreal was never planned with the engine behind the driver. The slats were simply cosmetic elements to break up the large sheet metal areas behind the doors. This is according to Luigi Giuliani's book "Alfa Romeo Montreal" (ISBN 88-7911-072-1, published 1992). Style Auto no. 30 (1972) also has two pictures of the prototype with its hood open.
