Claim about largest layoff in history edit
The source does not really back up this claim, and the sentence seems to help foster a more negative view of the article. The column has the headline "Canada's biggest pink-slip binge," but provides no proof or context. Was it the largest pink-slip binge at that time (given the author references other layoffs around that period), or was it historically the largest layoff? Additionally, the source is an opinion columnist, which I'm not sure if it meets the criteria for Wikipedia:Reliable sources. Would love some input before an edit is made to remove this sentence. - Pretty clearly, the article indicates this is the largest layoff in Canadian history up to that point, not just some arbitrary unspecified time period. I want to be clear, I think that's the only reasonable way that can be read and understood. I have no position on whether the Edmonton Journal opinion column would count as a reliable source in this particular instance. --Yamla (talk) 14:59, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
- My question is if that is true, though. I'm not sure an opinion column is the best source for that kind of claim. If you do a Google search of Canadian layoffs, other situations with more than 20k come up (cod fishermen in the 80s due to federal government policies, for example). I have no issue keeping it in the article, as long as we confirm that it is true. Right now, it doesn't seem to have an accurate source backing it up.RoyalObserver (talk) 11:07, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
- Amusingly, it's not relevant whether or not it is true, only if it is verifiable. See WP:V. However, your other part of the argument is directly on point.
