Adder as in "Adder charge"

adder vs viper

What is the difference between adder and viper? Or isn't there any? Since for example Vipera berus article has this: Vipera berus, the common European adder or common European viper 82.141.93.49 (talk) 00:33, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Placing adder = snake topmost in list

I am placing the meaning of adder as a snake topmost in the list, for two reasons. Firstly the snake meaning is the root meaning for nearly all of the other entries. Secondly, the adder is the only venomous snake in much of Europe, and in case of snakebite emergencies this information needs to be easily visible at the top of the list. 86.133.224.70 (talk) 10:16, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

{{redirect-distinguish2 . Per WP:DPT, I checked various tools. Wikinav says that over 2/3 of visitors to Adder go on to Vipera berus, with the next closest being Adder_(electronics) (with 11.95% and 14.2% across the two months) and List of snakes by common name#A (with 11.34% and 11.74%).

wmcloud finds 20166 pageviews for Vipera berus, far more than the 9162 Adder (electronics) sees and 6873 for List of snakes by common name.

Google Books Ngram Viewer shows that "adder" has consistently been far more popular than "European adder" and (as an example) "full adder", but I don't think I can tell what sense the word adder was used in from their records.
