Location of Denton

The page currently says:

The series is set in the town of Denton, which from the geographical references in the series appears to be in South Yorkshire.

How come, therefore, that none of the characters (especially not Frost, nor his chief superintendent) have Yorkshire accents? Everyone speaks as if they're from the south of England, or the Midlands at most. --Thoughtcat 19:50, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

It used to say "Oxfordshire", with a note to the effect that there is in fact a Denton in Oxforshire, though the name is a coincidence. Denton's postcodes (in the series) start with DN, which is a real postcode area covering part of South Yorkshire, but this is a coincidence too (or rather, a mistake, as the producers admitted after people started pointing it out) - DN in real life refers to Doncaster, DN in the programme is clearly Denton. This does not mean that Denton is Doncaster, and indeed it quite obviously isn't. --Bonalaw 12:16, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

I've been watching old episodes to check this out. In the early episode "Stranger in the Dark", briefing meetings take place in front of a large map of what is without any doubt Swindon. The Swindon location is further borne out in later episodes with shots of places I recognized such as the shopping malls, certain office blocks, the areas near the railway and so on. Also references to visiting Oxford and in one specific episode it is "20 miles to Reading along the M4." Season 1, Episode 2 - Not With Kindness - is partly filmed traveling from St Michaels up (and down, in car shots) Westgate End in Wakefield. Frost is dropping off his wife's sister at Denton train station which is the old Westgate train station. Google Street View

Having made various deliveries around Yorkshire I can confirm several locations I have visited that have been used in the series, the police station was filmed at Farnell Electronics in Armley Road, the pub where frosts car is covered in rubbish is round the corner, one mans meat was filmed in Humberside, the abattoir was a company called sunlight in Wakefield. The fancy dress shop ended up being a furniture shop in Castleford have delivered to it. A clinical waste company told me there wheelie bins were used in benefit of the doubt, Colby's waste site i think is white rose at Leeds hospital. several scenes where shot in Armly road Leeds. In Series 14 episode 1 when Frost is giving a briefing, he is shown in front of a white board with the numbers of other police stations in (presumably) the area. These include Devizes and Alton amongst others in the Berkshire/Hampshire/Wiltshire locale. Also I can remember from way back in one of the earlier episodes Frost perusing traffic reports, and the front cover of these had Thames Valley police on them. --Jonathanwalshuk (talk) 14:12, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Actually according to that Super Sleuths series on ITV3, Denton is supposed to be based in the Thames Valley. Wingfield based his novels in the South of England (Thames Valley and there was one non Frost book that was based round in the Dorset, Devon, Cornwall area (it was on Radio 7 a year or so ago and the theme music was the Firebird Suite by Stravinsky (I think!!) I can't remember what it was called however. Whether or not it was filmed in Yorkshire has no relevance to where Denton is based. It's like saying that since Doctor Who is filmed in Wales then the series is based in Wales (Whereas due to cheapness on behalf of BBC Wales, Wales stands for nearly every planet or major city location :-)) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.2.90.81 (talk) 18:31, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

From various visual and geographic references, I have always been convinced that Denton is either Swindon or Reading. The last ever episode was filmed at St Gregory's School in SE Oxford. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.21.162.218 (talk) 00:19, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

In the episode "Keys to the Car" from series 6 it is stated at least twice that the distance between Denton and Crawley (Sussex)is 60 miles. In the series 10 episode "Close Encounters" it is said that Denton is 70 miles from Solihul. There are two spots that fit these distances, one north east of Luton and the other is Hungerford. In the episode Held in Trust S10 Ep03, Frost and his DS are stood in front of a street map clearly marked Denton. This map is in fact a street map of Swindon as you can clearly see Great Western Way, Rodbourne Road and the railway branching from the main station to Bristol and Cheltenham. Characterisation

I have removed this; [1] ... , thinking nothing for example of breaking into a suspect's property without a warrant. Neither is he above planting evidence to arrest a criminal who would otherwise get away with the crime. Frost can also be rude and aggressive to almost anyone, including innocent subordinates.

I have seen a lot of the episodes of this series and I have not noticed this characteristic behavior of Frost in the series. There is even an episode that is about an investigation where his old collages where involved in planting evidence and Frost exposes them. Frost is more and old style policeman who can can bend the rules but does not break them. --Walter 22:17, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

I'd agree that Frost is mostly by the book (on the important things), although I do vaguely remember him planting a charm from a charm bracelet in someone's car in one episode...perhaps that's what the person who added that was referring to. Paul 1978 22:52, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Correction about what I in 2007 have written; I have now seen an episode where frost has planted evidence. I was an old episode in 4:3 format. It was an episode where a child was abducted and Frost can find and rescue the child just in time. The child was hidden near water. Frost planted a ticket of gas station to place the kidnapper at the crime scene.

George Cross Medal

One thing that I have been trying to find out is whether there is an episode of Frost undertaking his act of bravery?(!) Or is the story just mentioned in another episode? I have just bought most of the series but have yet to get 4 and 5. If this episode does exist, please would someone tell me which one.

"Endangered Species" considered to be Season 12 by the creators

I recently purchased "A Touch Of Frost - Series 6 - 12 - Complete"-DVD box. The first episode is 'Appendix man' and the last one is "Endangered Species". This would mean "Endangered Species" would be season 12, and following the other episodes are season 13 83.101.2.138 (talk) 22:13, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Location

The article used to say that the show "appears to be set" in Thames Valley, and now it says Yorkshire. I don't know of any source for either, but none of the police officers, suspects and whatnot speak Northern English--rather, they seem to speak a generic form of Southern English. I'm removing the reference to apparent location until we have a clear and reliable source.

My wife who has read all of Wingfield's Frost books says she has no idea where Denton is supposed to be--unlike, say, Reginald Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe, these stories don't seem to be geographically specific. The plain fact that it's shot in Yorkshire and produced by Yorkshire Television doesn't get us anywhere. --TS 12:12, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

I know this is original research, but I spoke to the series' composer, Ray Russell, and he confirms that it is indeed supposed to be Thames Valley, but the producers have no problem utilising locations that have no relation to the Thames valley. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 15:08, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

The article definitely shouldn't say that the television series is, or even "appears to be" set in any specific region of England. The novels don't give any specific setting either, as far as i'm aware. Tasty monster (=TS ) 16:36, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
