British Isles edit

I've removed the term British Isles as it is not accepted in Ireland.

sporting terms (such as "boxing") are not proper nouns edit

the sporting terms (such as "boxing", "fencing", etc.) used in the list are not proper nouns. neither are those terms starting a sentence. there is no need for capitalization.--96.232.126.27 (talk) 10:13, 22 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pending names edit

there is no rule that this needs final list ahead of time, of course in 3 weeks it will be, but in the meantime to list RS sources suggesting leading candidates is not forbidden and no individual OWNs WP or this page. Its also notable for the reader to know, in the meantime, who stands the chance of getting it./who might haveitLihaas (talk) 10:16, 3 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

2012 Summer Olympics national flag bearers edit

Moved page back to "2012 Summer Olympics national flag bearers" to standardize over all the articles similar to this. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 23:01, 12 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

How is this standardized? The way the article intro is written, this isn't supposed to cover the Closing Ceremonies flag bearers. Is it also supposed to cover that? -- 76.65.131.160 (talk) 10:35, 14 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well said. The relevance in the first section deals with this and so does the tempate.Lihaas (talk) 00:04, 26 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

IOP/IOA/whatever order edit

Given the recent disputes over IOP/IOA/whatever, I'm sure we'll run into some dispute as to where they're marching. To settle it preemptively, it is almost certainly right before Britain, as has been done previously. Aside from Precedent, [1] indicates that Suriname is 174th, so the IOPs/IOAs/whatevers wouldn't be marching under I, O, P, or A, or that would bump Suriname to 175th. And I don't see any other logical place for them after 174th besides right before Great Britain. Let's settle that preempetively before we get an edit war going again. Smartyllama (talk) 22:00, 23 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Now I'm not so sure though. The PDF seems to indicate they'll be marching in alphabetically under "I". We'll find out soon enough, so since we have conflicting sources (one saying Suriname is marching 174th, which would imply IOA is after them, and another saying IOA is alphabetical, I'd recommend not changing anything for the moment. When people see where they come in, we can change it if necessary. NBC is showing it on tape in the US, so I won't know for a while. But someone in Europe can change it in a few hours. Page title edit

Article deals with the entire event of the Parade of Nations not just flag bearers (See first section). Also WP:OSE is not an arguement.Lihaas (talk) 21:52, 24 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

australia speculation edit

the article at http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sport/tough-job-to-choose-olympic-flag-bearer-20120626-2107o.html merely speculates on names that might be chosen. (it is also now a month old).--96.232.126.27 (talk) 11:46, 26 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

the article at http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/a/-/basketball/14377368/jackson-firms-as-flag-bearer/, date 26 july 2012, indicates "Nick Green won’t yet reveal who he has chosen as Australian flag bearer for tomorrow’s London Games opening ceremony. He has made his decision. And while he is keeping his call under wraps for another 10 hours..."--96.232.126.27 (talk) 11:53, 26 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
the press release from the Australian Olympic Committee, dated 25 july 2012, at http://london2012.olympics.com.au/news/green-has-made-flagbearer-decision quotes the Australian Olympic Team’s Chef de Mission, Nick Green, "I'll make the announcement as we have traditionally done, on Thursday night at the team reception, and let's not spoil the surprise by eliminating people from the process."--96.232.126.27 (talk) 12:03, 26 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Number of athletes edit

This is not a list of competitors: the number of athletes from selected nations is irrelevant to the parade. If every athlete, and only athletes, had paraded, it might have been, but that has never been the case. Kevin McE (talk) 23:52, 27 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Olympic flag bearers edit

What about the bearers of the Olympic flag? Where is the appropriate place to list them? The Olympic flag is carried by Daniel Barenboim, Sally Becker, Shami Chakrabati CBE, Leymah Gbowee, Haile Gebrselassie, Doreen Lawrence OBE, Ban Ki-moon and Marina Silva during the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Summer Games at the Olympic Stadium in London, Saturday, July 28, 2012. That belongs in 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony and is already there. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:33, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Not competing edit

List of sovereign states lists 206. Which country or countries are not competing? Is this mentioned anywhere? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:08, 4 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's a bit more complicated than two nations not competing. Of recognised UN members, there are no olympic teams from the Vatican City, Kosovo, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria, Sahrawi, Somaliland, South Ossetia, and South Sudan (which has an athlete in the IOA but no IOC). However there are teams from "non-nations" American Samoa (part of the US for UN purposes), Aruba (part of Netherlands), British Virgin Is (of the UK), Cayman Is (of the UK), Hong Kong (of China), Guam (of the US), and the Virgin Islands (of the US). IanB2 (talk) 18:44, 8 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that's a bit more complicated that "all countries in world less a few"! I'm not sure that could be added easily. But a footnote might be very useful? Martinevans123 (talk) 19:01, 8 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Formal names edit

While we're busy listing every imaginable eccentricity in the official Olympics roster, why are the British Virgin Islands recognized by their full name, while United States Virgin Islands are known simply as "Virgin Islands"? --SchutteGod (talk) 19:50, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

USA link in list needs to be fixed edit

The USA link is to the US at the Olympics article and not the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics article as in the style of all the other country links. I've been on Wikipedia many years, but I couldn't figure out how to fix it. Too complicated template code. --Pmsyyz (talk) 03:34, 16 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
