@QatarStarsLeague: Thanks so much! Just a note, I clipped most of the newspaper articles so it can be viewable from behind the paywall. Was there not a placeholder, interim representative for Pepper's seat after his death? It seems that the governor typically appoints an interim officeholder.

Not for U.S. House seats-- Senators can get interim appointments, but it's because they have 6 year terms and it's usually until a special election can be held (laws vary by state). But for the U.S. House, it's always a special.

Was there antagonism of a racial bent between Richman and Kennedy?

There was, but the coverage doesn't really talk about it that much. It really focuses on Lee Atwater's comments nationally and that Kennedy doesn't endorse him afterwards.
