Talk:10th Parachute Brigade (Malaysia)

Clarification needed

edit

There should be clarification done on the status of the brigade, whether they are designated special forces or designated elite unit. There are differences in it. Currently, as of my knowledge only GGK, Paskhau, Paskal, VAT69 are designated special forces units in Malaysia.

The brigade is not a special forces unit. It is a quick reaction unit. In fact, they don't receive the special forces allowance. They are however, designated as elite unit. With regards on the need of citation on the formation of the brigade, there is no written evidence of the request by Maldives. However, the information is believed to be leaked to the public by some intelligence officers. Singapore's suspicion of the formation of the brigade is well-known on the ground. And it was not helped when the brigade was officially launched, they simulated an attack on the island of Langkawi on the pretext of wrestling it back from enemy. Incidently, both Maldives and Singapore are island nations.
So these are generally anecdotal accounts. I am not sure what Wikipedia's policy on such accounts are but I suspect that it would be good practice to put up information that can be independently verified. Unless somebody is willing to come up with some documentary evidence on the Maldives and Singapore connection, I suggest removing it from the article. -- Bob K 17:02, 9 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

10 or 10th?

edit

I found this unit listed as both 10 Paratrooper Brigade and 10th Paratrooper Brigade on Google. 10th matches how US units are numbered and also matches my memory of English usage, but I can't find either my Strunk & White or CMOS at the moment.

10th Paratrooper Brigade sounds a little more correct. The former sounds like a direct transliteration from the Malay. Just my 2 cents. --Bob K 19:57, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Help from expert on Malaysian military unit names

edit

The unit names in this article need some attention from an expert. There is a mix of unit designations, sometimes using cardinals - 10 PARA, and sometimes ordinals, 10th PARA. Also, there's a 'Bn' abbreviation in some of the unit names, I don't know what that means... maybe 8th Bn Royal Army means 8th Battalion Royal Army? I'm guessing there's a standard in WP:MOS somewhere for how to list military units but I couldn't find it. The designations throughout this article should be harmonized to follow the standard. I managed to get some background information from this news report in a Malaysian newspaper (in Malay). From that report, it would seem that some of the facts in the Wikipedia entry in incorrect, primarily in the timeline. While 3 Battalion formations from 2 Regiments did form the core of this new airborne Brigade, the 9th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment was only jump ready by 1993 (rather than 1990 as per this entry).
As far as the name is concerned, it would seem that the etymology for infantry Battalions in Malaysia would be (X) (Formation Type) (Service Arm), ie. 11th Brigade Infantry (the current garrison for the state of Selangor [1]). Incidentally the previous designation for this Brigade was the 10th Brigade Infantry before it was re-designated in 1994 as the 10th Brigade Paratroopers [2].
Looks like a much more thorough cleanup would be required for this entry, and as far as I can tell, for most of the entries within the Military of Malaysia category. -- Bob K 22:46, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true.
