Restructuring edit

The article was a mess. I have tried to re-organize the information. Em-jay-es 03:01, 7 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

The following was out of place:

Angel Berroa Declines
Following his rookie year, Angel Berroa's performance went down annually in on-base percentage, runs, slugging percentage and stolen bases. His fielding statistics included 77 errors in 2003-2005 (24,28,25) that were the most among starting American League shortstops in that time span.

Berroa has also produced declining walk totals in the years after his ROY award. Berroa walked once very 21 plate appearances in 2003, but had fallen to a 36-to-1 PA/BB ratio in 2005. Through May 15 2006, Berroa had only one walk in his first 130 plate appearances.

The disappointment in Berroa's development may be related to being caught up in "Age-gate" fiasco in early 2002 when many Latin American players, subjected to greater scrutiny by the United States government, turned out to be older than they claimed. Berroa was two years older than thought when he was drafted by Oakland and traded to Kansas City. This remarkably altered the projections of his future.

Berroa signed a guaranteed contract extension on May 7, 2004, paying him a guaranteed $11 million through 2008 (annual salaries of $500,000; $2 million; $3.25 million; and $4.75 million, with a $5.5 million team option or $500,000 buyout for 2009).

  • John Sickels, a minor league baseball analyst and Baseball Prospectus author, offered this downbeat analysis of Berroa in May 2006: "In retrospect, Berroa was never as good as his 2001 or 2003 seasons led many (including me) to believe."

Acquisition in the Johnny Damon trade edit

I remember reading, when the Damon trade was made, that the Royals considered acquiring Berroa to be important, if not 100% mandatory, to agreeing to the deal. This would be a good fact to add, provided that it can be verified. Help finding a citation would be greatly appreciated. Jonneroo (talk) 02:09, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
