May 16 - At Stade de France in Paris, FC Barcelona defeated Arsenal F.C., 2-1, to claim the 2005-2006 UEFA Champions League football championship.
May 12 - In Doha, Qatar, American sprinter Justin Gatlin runs 100 metres in 9.766 seconds at the Qatar Grand Prix. Gatlin was thought to have lowered Jamaican Asafa Powell's world record by one one-hundredth of a second, but the International Association of Athletics Federations later discovered that Gatlin's time should have been rounded to 9.77 seconds instead of 9.76; Gatlin and Powell, therefore, share the world record.
February 8 - After hearing of a sponsorship deal from HP Foods, makers of HP Brown Sauce, whereby the HP logo will be present on the brown ball at all major tournaments, snooker player Jimmy White announces he has changed his name by deed poll to 'Jimmy Brown', and will wear brown clothing with a blue bow tie when competing at the upcoming Masters tournament. He has not yet decided on changing his name back after the tournament or keeping his new name.
February 7 - Ellen MacArthur breaks the record for a single-handed non-stop round-the-world voyage, with a time of 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds for the 27,000-mile (43,000 km) voyage.
February 6 - In the Super Bowl (logo pictured right), the New England Patriots became the first team since the 1997-1998 Denver Broncos to repeat as World Champions in their defeat of the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 Jacksonville, Florida. Deion Branch, the game's most valuable player, caught a Super Bowl-tying record 11 passes for 133 yards.
January 29 - At the 68th Corus chess tournament, held in Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands, FIDE world chess champion Grandmaster Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) and Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand (India) share first place in the "A" section, scoring nine points over the tournament's 13 rounds. Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, aged 14 years, wins the "B" section, securing himself a place in the "A" section of the 2007 tournament.
