A reader wrote in to Wikimedia Foundation noting that she had worked on the Jason Atherton article. As you know, there is no automatic process for reviewing to see if that tag is still appropriate. I assume the individual contacting is Lidiaopedia, would you be willing to provide some feedback? Obviously if it has been successfully cleaned up, the tag can be removed, if not, perhaps you could make some suggestions? I will point her to this discussion. Priory School, Isle of Wight

As one of the editors who reverted the edits on Priory School, Isle of Wight last month, I would appreciate your views on my latest changes. I have tried to go back to before the large number of edits that introduced all the unencyclopaedic content, so I have tried to improve the tone, add back some of the content that got lost and improve the references. Guess I Can't Do It

Hi, you answered my question about where to upload a one pg. article I wrote on a film. So, looking at "notability guidelines for films", I find I can't contribute my article, for I was in the film - actress Valora Noland. It was/is titled Sex and the College Girl, and has been much maligned by its current owners. If one buys a new house, you may not do what you like there, but must adhere to zoning restrictions and neighborhood standards. If one buys a film property, apparently one can do anything one wants, including slander it. Why would anyone want to degrade a decent film, especially the people who own it? I guess there are reasons, but they are not ethical.

Back in 1991 Jo Bob Briggs included it in his "Sleaziest" series, and his opening review was funny and mostly supportive. This is not a junk or X rated film, and it needs a friend to speak up for it.

I wrote a good pg, a plot summary and a two paragraph review, and am sad I can't contribute this. No one who acted in that film deserves to be slandered by the current marketing strategies.Kamitra1 (talk) 20:52, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Request Edit Queue

Hi Ukexpat. Since I am myself a PR person that often contributes to Wikipedia in a COI capacity, I prefer to avoid managing the Request Edit queue personally, but I processed a good 15-20 requests, mostly because nobody else is and some of them were months old.

YouSendIt (mine), Chevron, and a couple others are larger requests we would expect to take a while. But there's still a good 5 requests in the queue[1] that could be closed, where I prefer not to do those specifically for various COI reasons.

I saw your name on a couple Request Edit pages and I thought I would see if I could persuade you to help finish off the rest of the queue, where I cannot, except the larger ones that we might expect to stick around longer. CorporateM (Talk) 17:23, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Trying to update EBS

Meanwhile, another editor has commented on the discussion thread, though their responses have been unhelpful, disputing simple statements about the company while making contradictory statements. Birth names

I agree that the birth name field should be used only when the birth name is different than the public name. However, the template page does not define what "different" means. For me, "Niall Campbell Douglas Ferguson" is different than "Niall Ferguson", and I think it is very useful to have that full, four-word name in the infobox by birth date and birth place. On the other hand, for, say, Mia Kirshner, who was apparently born just Mia Kirshner, it would be pointless to just record "Mia Kirshner" again in the infobox under birth name (also because it's possible there is a middle name out there somewhere). As I said at the Help Desk, if you or Mr Heller use the article's talk page to discuss the edits that you think should be made, and provide reliable sources to support them, the changes will be made by consensus. Hi,a question-you said that Mr. Hellers info had to be verified right? Mr. Heller went thru it and corrected the information so it was correct. Everything he corrected is in his the book he wrote that is listed under his references on the page-the book called "Ruthless". What can I do to show this is all validated and true?

I was not referring to you when I spoke of vandalism-- I had just removed comments from the page talking about " see fat Colm Magner in this TV show etc etc". i know exactly who made the comments. My understanding was that Wikipedia records the ip addresses of editors. So I guess you do too!!

Their talk page is at User talk:Canoe1967. As you are the subject of that photo, it cannot be "own work", as you did nor create the image yourself (unless you used a delayed shutter release). Usually a photographer retains the copyright unless it was a "work for hire" or the copyright was assigned to you by the photographer some other way. The best course of action is to provide evidence that you own the copyright following the process set out WP:IOWN.--ukexpat (talk) 20:06, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your advice. But all I have been doing is ADDING outside sources to show that the information is legitimate. So what do I need to do now to have the big caveat above my name removed? Do I ask an outside source to verify all the information? If so, who do I ask to do that for me?

Of course I created the page, as thousands of actors and writers do. I simply want it to look professional. So please advise. Because now the page looks deeply suspect. And is there a time limit as to how long these notices appear on my page? How many more citations are needed before the note about ciations is removed? And who makes these decisions?

It's all very well thanking me for the advice but you do not seem to be following it! Edits by users who have a conflict of interest are heavily scrutinised for neutrality and other potential problems. That's why we recommend that you discuss your requested changes on the article's talk page. The maintenance tags at the top of the article (it is not "your page") are there to alert readers to potential problems and they will remain there until other users who do not have a COI determine that the issues have been resolved.--ukexpat (talk) 20:21, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

On the contrary, I was merely explaining to you that what I was doing today was connecting the page to outside verifiable sources. There is very little subjective analysis needed for that. And in fact it leaves less room on the page for any exaggeration or deliberate deception. If there is a rule that one is not supposed to edit any page which one has any connection to, that should be made clear. Also, kindly be specific and tell me what the issues of concern are. Clearly you put that notice on the Colm Magner page, so please explain specificaly what information on the page lead you to take that action. Because there is not one bit of information there that is not supported.

Also kindly tell me how other people go about making any neccessary changes. And again, who decides when these notices are removed? How many people decide? One? Two? More? Are you personaly making all decisions related to the Colm Magner Wikipedia page? And who are you?

Whenever I come into contact with a COI editor, I always ask them to use the article's talk page to request edits. That way it is easier for everyone. The maintenance tags can be removed by anyone if they think the issues have been resolved, but if another editor puts them back, discussion will have to take place. My only objective today, regarding the Colm Magner Wikipedia Page, was to make the page as objective as possible by linking it to outside sources. Now that it is set up, (yes, I set it up) I would much rather leave the page to others to add to as they see fit. However, the reason I got on the page to begin with was because I noticed that some juvenile had been changing things and adding infantile comments like "watch fat Colm Magner in this clip"... Clearly one of the many envious morons I've encountered in my rather uneven career in the arts.

I suppose I could have asked a friend , or my wife, or my agent, to edit the page, but I decided against it.

Could you please indicate specifically how the references can be improved. I'd like to have them improved.

Also, I wasn't even aware of what the "articles talk page " was until this morning. We are not all computer savvy.

Finally, I am not sure it was you, but someone deleted the comment on the Colm Magner Page indicating that he had worked with "some of Canada's most innovative theater companies". Well, any research into those companies, and their cast lists, will show that I worked for them, and that many many people in the press have indicated that they ARE Canada's most innovative theater companies. So for someone who calls themselves an editor to randomly delete that quote, is , in my opinion, heavy-handed and irresponsible. It's also kind of silly.

This has been my introduction to the inner workings of Wikipedia. It's been...interesting...

The editing on the page of the individual below appears to have a connection to the editing on the Colm Magner page. I am curious as to why.

My feeling is that it is likely that unusual comments and edits made on my page were made by the individual whose page is referenced

My comments regarding the edits which I deleted from the Colm Magner page are referring to derogatory comments made by someone other than you, which I first discovered on the Colm magner Wikipedia page earlier today. I would like to discover who made the comments I deleted, like:

"watch fat Colm magner in this video"

and

("who says")

Regarding "who says", I believe I had already included links to the reviews of my play "The Scavenger's Daughter".

Please assist me in discovering who edited my page before you became involved.

We don't appear to be making much progress here so I suggest that you direct all further questions to the WP:BLPN noticeboard. I can, however, tell you that the vandalism was added by User:131.202.132.56 (see the history page at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Colm_Magner&action=history). I have also added a couple of tags to Robert Bodrog - you should not be surprised to see unreferenced articles on Wikipedia, there are millions of articles and it takes time to get to them all. Colm Magner

Dear Ukexpat

Thank you for your information regarding the vandalism on the Colm Magner page. I agree with you that our discussion hit an impasse-- I asked on two occasions for specifics regarding what more could be done to improve the sources on the Colm Magner page and received no reply. I would think that if someone was very concerned about enforcing rules on Wikipedia that they would be capable of being very specific as to the reason why they put notices on a page.

Further, I indicated that I was wondering why the statement that Colm Magner had worked for some of Canada's "most innovative theatre companies" had been removed from the Colm magner page. There was nothing subjective about that statement at all-- Any search of any major press source in Canada (as well as a few international publications) would provide ample evidence that these are in fact considered by many major and well established theatre journalists to be Canada's most innovative theatre companies. And any search of the cast list of previous shows would show that I have worked with these companies on numerous occasions. So for an editor to remove those words from the Colm Magner page without doing their research indicates a lack of professionalism.

Thanks again for the info regarding vandalism. Now I have to figure out how to connect an ip address to a name.

If you don't mind my asking, how would I go about replying to your response on my question in "Wikipedia: New contributors' help page/questions"?

Basically you mentioned there was no way for me to tell whether I could use the picture or not so I should not upload it. What I wanted to ask was if I could link the page that I found the pic at and we could determine whether I could use it.

If not, I was wondering if you could help me find an picture that is accurate for the article I wanted to update but was also was not copyrighted (and if not, a picture that I could provide the source/author of).

Just click the edit link to the right of your question, then below my answser, indent with a : for each level and type away. By all means link to the image you found and I will take a look, but don't hold out much hope. As for finding images, I am afraid that I don't have the time for that, but Flickr is a good source, if you use care to avoid images that are claimed to be owned by the Flickr user but really are not (a practice known as "Flickrwashing"!). Brooke Fraser

Hi

I am a representative of Brooke Fraser's and using the name "apples and cider" have made edits to her page, specifically removing the line "Christian artist" from the introduction of her bio.

As I am sure you are aware, Brooke's Faith is central to her life. But she also makes it clear that she is not and never has been a Christian Recording Artist. This is a distinction she's been at pains to make clear.

As a songwriter under her married name Brooke Ligertwood, she works in this genre but her recording career as Brooke Fraser is not one in the realm of the Christian Music industry.

She has asked that we monitor this page to attend specifically to this matter and I note that you have been re-inserting the change. I am sure your intentions are good but just wanted to make you aware of why the changes are reappearing and will continue to do so at Brooke's behest.

A few points as you appear to be misunderstanding how Wikipedia works: first, no-one controls the content of an article especially the subject of the article - content is decided by consensus, after discussion if necessary. This is an encyclopedia, not another web presence to be used for promotion etc, please see WP:OWN; second, you have a clear conflict of interest, so please read WP:COI - you are strongly advised not to edit the article directly, but to use its talk/discussion page to suggest changes that you would like to be made, providing reliable sources for any such changes; third, you should disclose you conflict of interest on your user page; fourth, if you had used an edit summary to explain your removal of this content, it would probably not have been reinstated. Horrie the Wog Dog

Hello Ukexpat,

I am writing to you to understand what your interest is in the Horrie The Wog Dog story and why you removed my edits on March 12th. Jim Moody (James Bell Moody) was my father and I was mortified when the book 'Animal Heroes' with this twist to Horrie surviving was published. It was done so without consultation with members of my family that where alive when the sad events took place and are still alive today. All the available evidence points to Jim's inability to accept the consequences of exposing Horrie's existence in promoting the original book by Ion Iddress. His sister and father and cousins, all pleaded with him not to take Horrie to Sydney. Jim did it anyway. He was given assurances by quarantine that if he handed Horrie in, he would not be needlessly destroyed. Parliamentary Hansard reports acknowledge that these assurances were given.

My father handed over Horrie in the belief that because he had shown no sign of illness in the 3 years he was living with my grandfather that he would be released and returned after appropriate health checks. The parliamentary report on question time goes on to admit that these assurances were given and were broken. The reason given was that the head of the quarantine station was not authorised to give such assurances and under the quarantine Act, officials were not required to give Jim any notice that Horrie would be destroyed. It is also documented in the correspondence in the National Archives that Horrie was not shot, he was gased. This also contradicts what has been placed on Wikipedia and subsequently copied by the Australian War Memorial, who I have also contacted.

Your most recent edits are better, but I removed your signature from the article and moved the reference down to the section about the dog's fate. Hi, I noticed that you have contributed to article about shaft driven bicycles. I am working with shaft driven bicycles and I have noticed that number of such bike models are on the increase. The improvements in hub-gears has made drive shaft more tempting option, and lately drive shaft has been adopted in many electric hybrid bicycles (Biomega, Wayel for example) In my company we have created first commercial recumbent bicycle with drive shaft. There are atleast two commercialy used drive shaft systems in the market place. The other one is coming from the company Sussex (used by us, Dynamic Bicycles, Rugged Bicycles, etc.) and Chinese system from company whose name I do not remember now (Biomega and Wayel are using that one). I was sent a link to a page so that I could follow the progress of the group tasked with looking into the matter. After having read the correspondence I felt that I might be able to help with information germane to the discussion but was unable to make contact with any of the participants. I confess to not being very adept at following the intricacies of the Wikipedia correspondence protocols or computer correspondence protocols in general, which may explain why I was not able to communicate with anybody. I suspect, however, that I may simply not be allowed to make contact with the discussion group. It is somewhat frustrating to watch a group of people discuss who you are or might be and what to do about you without being able to add anything to the discussion. I would like to assure you that I am not annoyed but simply frustrated.

If there is some way you could possibly pass on the information I would like to relate, it would be much appreciated. It would appear that the intention is to create two separate pages for the two Terrence Scammells. One of the participants - ukexpat- opined that he did not know which of the two Terrence Scammells should use the current page as the starting point for one of the entries. I may be of some assistance here. The British Terrence Scammell, born in London in 1937, has very few credits and they are all in the 'Live Action' section of the page, with the exception of - 'This is my Father' which is one of my credits. The rest of the hundreds of entries in all the other categories belong to me, the Canadian Terrence Scammell born in Montreal in 1958. I have painstakingly gone through all the credit entries and can verify this. Which leads me to my second comment concerning the response by - Unscintillating - regarding independent verification sources.

He mentions a resume at - www.mensour.ca/Resumes/Scammell.htm - which has now disappeared. This site belongs to my agent - Kate Mensour - located in Ottawa Canada. I checked the site myself this morning. I can see why one would think that my resume has disappeared. You cannot find the actors by searching for them by name. If, however, you go to the site there are category listings at the top of the page. If you select - Directors - a photograph of me with my name will appear, if you select the photograph a biography of me will appear. So, the resume does still exist it's just a little difficult to find.

Generally speaking if one checks the entries and the productions are in the animation, documentary, video game or voice over field and originate or have co-producers in Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver you can be sure that they belong to me. The fly in the ointment is ,of course, that alot of these projects originate in Europe or the United States and they may not list their Canadian co-producers.

If there is anything else I can do to help resolve this matter I am more than happy to assist in the process. I can forward you resumes of my acting and directing work if that will help. Frankly, however, short of sorting through boxes of old contracts and sending them to someone to verify that I have done the work I claim to have done or getting signed and notarised statements from directors and producers verifying that I am who I say I am, I don't really know how else to try and convince people that I am me and that my 30 year career history is real.

Surfing through, I found this article about David Rubio. I found what seems to be vandalism there but, by ... a bot?!! See in the "See Also" section where someone wrote "he was not born in America", contrary to the rest of the article's information. If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add [[File:File name.jpg|thumb|Caption text]] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. Restored speedy deletion

Hi. :) In 2011, you tagged article Louis J. Posner for speedy deletion under A7. It was subsequently deleted under that criteria, but a few weeks ago it was restored by means of pasting it in from a Wikipedia mirror. Terrence Scammell Disambiguation page

Hello, I hope you are well. I have had a look at the e-mail you sent me and the link to the disambiguation page for Terrence Scammell. I'm afraid the result is not exactly satisfactory. I have sent a reply to you via the Wikipedia Information Team so I won't go into the full particulars here. In short, however, the page you have created for the British Terrence Scammell continues to refer to him as 'a voice actor who commonly plays multiple roles in cartoons' which he does not. He is a stage actor who infrequently pays small roles in made for television movies. I am listed as a 'Canadian actor'. I am in fact the 'voice actor' 'who commonly plays multiple roles in cartoons'. This, however, is not the major problem. The reference page that you are using for the British Terrence Scammell, from 'Voice Chasers', not only attributes a list of credits for him that all belong to me, it also uses a picture of.... me! In fact the only thing on the page that doesn't belong to me is the erroneous attribution of the entire page to my British namesake. Sorry to be a bother, but I don't think we can call this 'mission accomplished' yet.

Paste from commons: Folks, we have received an e-mail from an elderly reader who has some very early photographs of Waikiki and Diamond Head that may be of interest to the project. I have given standard advice about uploading but it may be too complicated for our e-mailer. Would someone be kind enough to volunteer to help this gentleman? If you have copies the images then you can upload them. The copyright holder would need to email OTRS at commons to license them. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS has most of the detail. If you upload them then make sure the rights holder sends the file names or urls so OTRS volunteers can find them. You may wish to re-write the form on the OTRS page and include the file names. Then just have the rights holder forward that form to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org You may be able to email OTRS yourself and link or attach the images. Hello Ukexpat. Years ago, you helped me when I was creating the article Pete Snyder, then using the handle NMS Bill, when I worked for Mr. Snyder's company. I now use this current handle when I wish to make suggestions on a COI topic, and I no longer make direct edits per Jimbo's "bright line", but here once again I'd like to involve myself with this article. Mr. Snyder is now running for Lt. Gov in Virginia and, while I don't work for him now, I have contributed to his campaign, so I think it would be inadvisable that I edit. There's some very basic info missing from the article; would you be willing to look at what I've prepared (see here) and consider making these changes? UKExpat, help me understand what you're looking for on Richard W. Bulliet's page. You flagged it last November asking for "additional citations for verification. Please help by adding reliable sources." The references include the New York Times, Columbia University, Guardian newspaper, etc. He's a well-known author and educator, has sections on Amazon and YouTube, and has posted biographies from a dozen universities and newspapers. Please help me understand how these sources could be more reliable. And the photo of him that I posted was removed, I assume by you, despite the fact that I complied with Wikipedia's Image Use Policy. I am not sure what you are referring to - I have never edited Richard Bulliet. The BLP sources tag was added by User:Plot Spoiler. Nor did I delete the image - I am not an admin here or on Commons so I don't have the power to do that.
