About me

My nickname has a long and complicated history. Back when I was a wee lad in the 1980s, I received a Christmas gift of the totally obscure text adventure game Questprobe featuring Human Torch and the Thing. In 1990, I logged into my first bulletin board system (BBS), where of course you had to create an account to participate. After struggling mightily due to every variation on my quite-common name I could think of already being used, I thought, oh, the Human Torch is cool in that game, I'll try that. It worked, and I used that handle through the early part of the 90s. After the advent of the Internet, I started shortening it to Torchie for both my convenience and to avoid the occasional text parsing problems brought on by the spaces in the full name. But then I ran into the original problem: other people on this wild and woolly web were using that same nickname. So I decided I was the superlative instance of the name, and added the "st" to the end to indicate that. I've been using that name for more than a decade now, but some of my oldest online accounts still go by Torchie.

I have eclectic tastes, so I will make minor corrections and changes to all kinds of seemingly random pages. I brew my own beer, though not as much as I used to before I started having kids. I do yoga, though not as much as I used to before I got a day job on the far side of town. I have a wonderful loving wife and two toddler sons, with plans to have more kids. I'm interested in video games, cellular automata, Dungeons & Dragons, cognitive science, astronomy, programming, linguistics, cosmology, electronic music, industrial music...

I have a Steam Workshop page with test chambers for Portal 2.

  • CatScan – this is a fantastic tool for creating a list of articles to fix issues with. I've used it extensively to do copy editing on articles in my areas of interest, and am currently using it to deal with ~400 unsourced articles in the industrial music categories.
