DYK nomination

As I mentioned on my talk page, I have nominated this article for DYK, see Template talk:Did you know#Harry Whitney. Looks like a slam-dunk to me. – ukexpat (talk) 15:21, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes, you did your homework and are doing very well for a first article. Congratulations Even handled the conflict of interest I think. I took the liberty of adding some wikilinks etc. to the article, and doing some touch-up on the photo. Alas, the photos from the book are not great quality, at least the google scan. Take a look and verify I did not introduce any errors. Especially curious where you got the details, e.g. the birth date that is different than the one in the 1878 book (and census records if you go by the Whitney web site). presumably you know about Stephen Whitney (ship)? Thanks W Nowicki. The photos from the book are kind of fuzzy, but Whitney's pictures are quite remarkable documents and have been sold recently on ebay (http://northernwaterways.com/news/?p=1962). I have one nice 8x10 (a copy of an original) that I was thinking of deframing and scanning.

The birth date came from Who Was Who in America. If my math is right, it jibes with the "age 62" in his obituary.

I do know about the ship Stephen Whitney. SW was in partnership with Robert Kermit. But I didn't know the ship had its own article. I have been working on a Stephen Whitney page, but it is not done (in particular, no footnotes yet!).

By the way--my editorial comment about Bradish Johnson on the Harry Whitney site was merited. The sleazeball was at the center of an infamous scandal--he fed distillery mash to sick cows, and then sold the sickly and doctored milk to the poor! You can look it up (swill milk)--(Bradish Johnson's was the distillery at the heart of the scandal). But thanks for setting me straight anyway...

I never said the opinion was not merited. Just that unless you cite a reliable source, it does not belong on Wikipedia. In particular, the NYT obit does not say that (although of course obits were often "polite" in those days). The burden of proof is on the editor who wants to add something to "look it up" and include where they looked it up :-). Right now swill milk goes to Michael Tuomey which has no citations, sigh. Thanks for the work on the pictures W Nowicki. I do not know how to get a full image from a Google book. For some reason the portrait shown in the info box looks squished to me, like it was shown at the wrong ratio. Maybe it is just Whitney's pinched look. Wildcatman99 (talk) 13:31, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

I have not figured out yet how to download just a page, but can download the entire pdf from Google and then put that into Photoshop to access the original scan resolution. There are often several different scans of the same book, and various scanners will often re-scan pages with photos with different settings optimized for pictures rather than text (but not this one, alas). I do see what you mean: evidently Whitney was depicted as fairly "lean", but the pdf seems even more squished than the online preview. I tried compensating a bit for the aspect ratio variation, but can only "eyeball" it. And this is a sketch anyway so can never be sure on accuracy. W Nowicki (talk) 17:41, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Another great job and a very interesting subject! I think we can craft a DYK for this one based on the "swill milk scandal". I did notice that swill milk redirects to Michael Tuomey (politician) - I wonder if there is enough additional content for an article about "swill milk" itself?
