It's only a general interest in artistic and literary 'scenes' and how so much of the vital activity doesn't actually come from the big names that make it onto syllabuses, but from more 'minor' figures. Somehow I noticed the page, and then discovered that he appeared in the index of a lot of the books on my shelf, and I became more and more interested as I worked on the article. — Stumps 08:27, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Poetry Wikiproject

The wikiproject looks inactive. Looking at the history, the last message before mine was an edit in November and the dit before that was in August. Additionally, the discussion pages look dormant with comments posted without responses. From the WikiProject page, "A Wikiproject is designed to co-ordinate the efforts of several users, and to allow a group of conceptually related pages to have similar structures and appearance." Re: Nabokov and Bely

Nabokov is just a dwarf compared to the genuine giants of prose like Bely and Joyce. Unfortunately, very little of the former is available online. Modern people are after cheap stuff like Bulgakov and T.S.E :) I believe his major work on poetics is Медный Всадник как диалектика ритма in which he analyzes the rythmic structure of the Bronze Horseman line by line, but even our regional library lacks the book. I enjoyed reading his Мастерство Гоголя almost as much as the last volume of his reminiscences: this is the most meticulous study of a text that I've ever seen. I even copied a table which served Bely to compare the occurence of colour epithets in all the works of Gogol. He picked up every colour epithet found in Gogol's books and compiled a chronology of Gogol's colour evolution, showing how the colours mentioned by him most frequently did reflect his psychological state at any given period of his career. There was also a detailed, memorable comparison of Karamzin's, Pushkin's and Gogol's phrase to architectural styles. P.S. My favourite English-language poets are Marvell, Hardy, and Yeats. Bely's later works are out of print. As for the Symbolism articles, they get reprinted now and then. I even happen to own a copy but it's a hopeless task to find it among thousands volumes in my domestic library now that I move to a new house and my books are packed in boxes. When I unpack the boxes and find it, I'll let you know.

Keats, Coleridge, Frost, Auden are among my favourites, but Donne is too intellectual for my liking and I have trouble to follow his knotty syntax. By the way, I was recently surprised not to find the articles on Miss Gee and A Toccata of Galuppi's in Wikipedia. Hopefully, this will be amended soon.

As for modern Russian poetry (I think you talk about living writers), I would single out Bella Akhmadulina in Moscow and Alexander Kushner in St Petersburg, although Brodsky is obviously the most powerful voice to have emerged after WWII. By the way, I just spotted an anon's notice on Talk:Zaum and am at a loss as to how to respond. My interests lie with prose rather than poetry, so I hope you'll give a more adequate answer to his query. --Ghirla | talk 17:10, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, I'd like to see a discussion of Austrian poets (esp. ca. 1890-1930). There are some good works on this subject, but I don't have access to them any more. I'd also like to see more work on classic and contemporary Korean poets. Cross-reading poetry, children's' poetry (what's there now is a pittance and only about one side of the coin), and Ethiopian (ahmharic/Ge'ez) poetry (I only could find an article on Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin) are areas I'd like to see developed. I just scanned through the German Wik, and the only poet I found listed was Lorenz Leopold Haschka, (1749 - 1827). Well, that's a start. Here are some others from various sources on the Net - but I don't know most of them and cannot vouch for their importance. Wolfgang Bauer (contemporary); Hans Carl Artmann (June 12 1921 - December 4 2000), Ingeborg Bachmann (June 25, 1926 - October 17, 1973) (She, of course, is very well known but is already in Wik.}, Erich Fried (1921-88 - Well, I've heard of him - he's noteworthy), Franz Seraphicus Grillparzer (January 15, 1791 - January 21, 1872), Enst Jandl (very clever dadaist), Peter Rosegger (31 July 1843 - 26 June 1918), Adalbert Stifter (23 October 1805 - 28 January 1868), Georg Trakl (February 3, 1887 - November 3, 1914 - a leading poet). Also: Nikolaus Lenau (Britannica online), Diane Broeckhoven, Paul Celan (very famous - probably in Wik, but I can't check while working in this text-box), Zedlitz, Joseph Christian von (1790-1862), Stefan Zweig (very famous dramatist who also wrote some poetry the quality and importance of which I cannot say), Lilian Faschinger (contemporary), Friederike Mayröcker (contemp. leading experimentalist; Jandl's companion?), Raoul Schrott (contemp.), Peter Waterhouse (contemp.), Josef Weinheber (Britan. online), Evelyn Schlag (contemp.), Noebius (19th century). Unfortunately, I didn't come across more than one or two of my favorites from around the turn of the century - and I can't recall their names. There is a book of 'forgotten Austrian poets,' if I'm not mistaken. This would be a good source to check.

Thanks for the welcome to the poetry project. My areas of interest are pretty broad, I suppose: obviously Turkish poetry (which, by the way, is fairly woefully represented on Wikipedia at the moment—something I hope to have a hand in correcting), but also French poetry of the 19th and 20th centuries (currently I'm hoping to expand, in particular, on Henri Michaux, a particular favorite), poetic form(s), and probably some other random stuff as well.

As for what I'd like to see the project achieve, I think one of its most noble goals (if you will) is one that, as far as I can tell, it already has: structural standardization of poetry-related articles. Besides that, I haven't thought about it too much, but of course I'll let you know if anything comes to mind.

Also, thanks for the quick response (and compliments) about the Turkish literature article. I realize its length is probably a bit excessive, but (as I said on its talk page and also on its peer review), until such time as the offshoot articles get expanded upon (another pet project of mine), it's about the only detailed thing going in the way of Turkish literature on Wikipedia; hence, it's really long (though still just under that 50KB upper limit).

When moving a page to a different title, please use the "move" tab at the top of the screen (between "history" and "watch"). If you just do a cut and paste, as you did on this article, the edit history on the page doesn't get carried over. If you use the "Move" function, the history gets moved along with the page. I've put the Poetry article up as a Featured Article Candidate, and one of the comments was that more cites and references are needed. Quality storyboard

Thank you for catching the PDSA article link. I didn't notice that the link didn't lead to the Shewhart cycle article. PDSA should have a redirect to PDCA, Shewhart cycle, Deming cycle. I am new to Wikipedia and don't know how to work with redirects. There is a difference between PDSA and PDCA. Study is used to maintain the original intent of Dr. Shewhart in the cycle being a learning method based on the Scientific Method. Check implies only that the desired results occurred and that potential learning may be overlooked. The origin of Shewhart's concept is in epistemology and the work of C. I. Lewis. Shewhart was presenting a theory of knowledge. The Shewhart cycle article doesn't cover these issues and needs some work. There are some issues on OR as the history of the differences has not had much coverage. Shewhart never used PDCA which seems to have originated in Japan in the 1950s/1960s. Shewhart did not use PDSA. Deming insisted on PDSA as opposed to PDCA to focus on Shewhart's original intent of learning. To add to the confusion some call the cycle the Deming cycle. Deming never used that term as he always called it the Shewhart cycle. Leaders100 20:14, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Callow et alt.

I don't have Callow, Erickson, Gayford - and Arnold (I guess reference is to Wilfried N. - not to Matthias). I have the German translation of Wilfried N. differing in pagination, but I'll get along, if my guess is right. (Is this English, probably not!) Anyway, I would propose links to a letter, if information comes from such a unique, identifiable source. On the other hand, links to an author or an individual opinion should refer to a book or an essay.

In the VG timeline I've already fixed those links, where the source was obvious. For the rest, I count on your support.

In the main text it's much more difficult for me, to verify the sources, and probably more important in the end, to see if they are valid. This applies especially to Ken Wilkie: Not one source is given, though it's easy to show that his "interviews" mainly recall information published years and decades before, and his further "discoveries" have been toned down in serious recent publications. Wilkie is a journalist, sex & crime are his business - I wasted much time with people like him.

According to this putting punctuation marks within inverted commas when they are not part of the quote is the American style. It's interesting that you write that you are "pretty sure that at least in older editions of the Australian government Style Manual it was specified that commas should go inside the quotes." I'm not aware of any non-American style guides ever to recommend this ... however, I'm not exactly the World's leading expert on style guides.

You write that you "too happen to prefer the comma outside". That makes three of us: you, I and Wikipedia's Manual of Style. You write that "it seems more logical". It is more logical ... it's logical whereas the alternative is not. This, as far as I can make out, is why Manual of Style along with most of the World minus the USA (or so I thought) prefers it.

You write that "The labelling of this style of punctuation as 'American' also struck" you "as a bit antagonistic." All right, fair call. In future edit summaries I'll refrain from labelling it as such. Instead I'll just do what I usually do and either mark the edit as minor (which it really is) or not that I'm editing to comply with Wikipedia's Manual of Style. --Jimp 05:45, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Romanization of Cyrillic

I'm undecided on what romanization and what phonetics are necessary. Initially, I argued that because the article title was likely to be a common romanization, it would be useful to have a standard one (I was using the UN one) after the Cyrillic transcription, but someone's gone round quite a few of my articles and removed it. I can understand the argument that it just clutters the article, and you're only likely to read the standard romanization if you can read Cyrillic in the first place, therefore rendering it unnecessary. So perhaps the romanization can go, except in cases where the title is not a romanization of any sort, e.g. "Ural Mountains" or something. As for IPA, I don't know how to enter IPA, so I've never been able to edit any of those. I can read IPA for languages with which I'm familiar, but I wouldn't be much help on Russian, I'm afraid. I notice you reverted my intro essay on blank verse. True, it strayed off the definition. Guilty! But is the reversion much better? Notice all the history still in the intro. Anyway, be that as it may, it stung me that you mocked my reference to an English department document. Since when is a university publication — conveniently online — invalid? Perhaps my style of citation is too busy (again, guilty!), but cite we must, otherwise this Wikipedia can easily degenerate into a forum for lame or loony opinions. Pre-Columbian what-have-you

Hi. I see you reverted my change of 'aka' in one of the headings of Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact. I must admit I didn't check to see if it was directly linked from elsewhere; apologies if that was the nature of the gaffe. Assuming otherwise, I'd like to explain the rationale of my change a little more clearly than my admittedly rather glib edit summary did: I felt that 'aka' was a little too colloquial, and possibly not entirely clear to all readers ... Wiktionary, for example, gives the correct usage as A.K.A. which would be clearer, but I still feel it is not necessary to use this abbreviation at all, bearing in mind that we should of course explain jargon, even where (or perhaps especially where) the jargon is incidental to the topic of the article. I had thought 'and' was an adequate alternative as it is indeed only a hypothesis that the two names refer to the same person, but other possibilities include the full 'also known as' or perhaps the word 'alias'. Quoting from WP:BETTER#Think_of_the_reader ... "Wikipedia is an international encyclopedia. The people who read it have different backgrounds, education and worldview from you. Try to make your article accessible to as many of them as possible." I'd be interested to know your thoughts on this. Stumps 14:14, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi Stumps - I do have a named account. It's ZephyrAnycon. I just wasn't logged in when I made that contribution. Why is Tiptoety saying my edits were not 'constructive'? I find that unbelievable: obviously all my edits were made in constructive spirit, if they did not conform to Wikipedia policy by the letter. It surprises & saddens me that anything of what I added to that page might be dubbed 'vandalism'. Does Tiptoety have any sense of what is good writing, and what isn't?

Stumps, Geoffrey Hill's a tricky one. There's a lot of criticism & little 'research'. No biography, for example. Question is: why is citing the opinions of critics much more encyclopedic than original research? Many poetry articles here tend to be anthologies of the standard critical arguments, & the proportion of representation of one view to others, even the order in which they're put, is as easily conducive to tendentiousness as the publication of (important distinction) unreferenced but well-evidenced criticism. Best way forward I think would be a chronological account of his career, describing the contents & notable details of each book &, crucially, quoting lines of poetry from them. Iambic pentameter

Hello. I've come back to the iambic pentameter article (a little later than I expected to) and have been looking at the systems of scansion question in that article again. I'm teaching it for the next few weeks, so I expect I'll be dabbling in that and similar articles for a bit; I'll try to introduce a more practice-orientated angle to supplement what's there already. From my quick glance at the talk page, I think I'm right in saying that you didn't object to adopting a different notation in the article, and suggested the ictus and breve? That one is fine, but second-preference with me; I'd prefer this:

My reasoning is to do with an actor glancing at a page quickly and facilitating an intuitive apprehension, mostly. I know it's probably not the most widespread notation in the academy.

Do you have strong feelings either way? I thought I'd hold off on an edit until I'd run it by you.

I'm now working over the Milton article, but as usual there are other topics that need writing (his vicar in Bread Street, a book). I wanted to broach Jacobean/Caroline poets in general with you. We have terms like "metaphysical", "Sons of Ben", and Cavalier poet, religious poet for that period. Last time I looked, the whole idea that you had metaphysical and religious on one side, secular and follower of Jonson and cavalier on the other, seemed to be fairly worthless as an explanation. I was working on Andrew Marvell just now. For Milton, the big missing element seems now to be the first century or so of critical reception. That wouldn't be so hard to add, I think. There is obviously a huge amount on the various editions, and (particularly) the illustrators. That sounds like a separate article, really. Also the Blake influence is pretty interesting to pin down. • Keep - much of the news material are event announcements, but the event announcements are rather long and are usually done like that for groups that are significant. AS such, the localness of the group isn't really relevant. As for the AccessMyLibrary link, it's a short article and access is free. You just need to register. The notability of the Powow River Poets as a literary entity rests on two claims:

1) As a workshop composed of some twenty-four members, the Powow River Poets includes individuals whose poems have collected a wildly disproportionate number of the nation's significant poetry awards. To give just a few highlights, of the total of eleven Richard Wilbur Awards so far, five have been won by Powows (Krisak, Espaillat, Juster, Nicol, and Warren); of the nine New Criterion Awards, two have been won by Powows (Coyle and Warren); of the fifteen Howard Nemerov Prize winners, eight have been Powows (Juster three times, Espaillat twice, Warren, Crawford and Scaer once each); one has won the T. S. Eliot Prize (Espaillat). According to the judges of those competitions, as well as several seasoned critics and reviewers, the group comprises some of the best poets--particularly formal poets--writing in this country today.

2) Since 1994, the group has brought distinguished poets with national reputations to read for local audiences, through the Powow River Poets Reading Series, which has hosted scores of the nation's best-known poets, including Dana Gioia, X. J. Kennedy, A. E. Stallings, Tim Murphy, Richard Moore, Gail White, Robert Shaw, Lewis Turco, Diana Der-Hovanessian, David Mason, Leslie Monsour, Erika Funkhouser, and two former Laureates, Richard Wilbur and William Jay Smith.

Several are also noted translators: Krisak and Juster have published book-length translations of Horace, Ovid and Petrarch; various members have published translations from French, German, Spanish, Tagalog, Portuguese and Swedish; one is translating the best-known poems by Robert Frost into Spanish. The group is well known, and highly regarded, by poets throughout the country, who perceive them as something of a poetic phenomenon. X. J. Kennedy's introduction to the group's anthology conveys that, as did the panel devoted to the achievements of the group, presented at the West Chester University Poetry Conference on June 9, 2006. Members of the group have participated in every one of the West Chester University Poetry Conferences for years, as conferees, panelists, speakers and faculty. Powows have also participated in the yearly Newburyport Literary Festival held in April, and in last year's first Massachusetts Poetry Festival, held in Lowell in October, on televised literary interviews and other events at various literary gatherings in many states.

Scansion

I'm engaged in a total overhaul of Systems of scansion, which I believe you originated. My work is at User:Phil wink/sandbox2. I'm contacting you for 2 reasons: First, I look forward to any input you may have, if you're still interested in the topic. Second, I'm not quite sure how I should proceed in going live, and you appear to be knowledgeable in wiki process. My intent is that when the article is in decent shape, it should reside on the page Scansion which currently redirects to Systems of scansion. I think this is justified because "Scansion" is the simplest and most common entry that would be searched, and the new article is expanded sufficiently to merit the broader term. Then Systems of scansion should be blanked and become merely a redirect to Scansion. I think this is justified because, although I have retained almost nothing verbatim from the existing article, I have kept and even expanded all the systems to which it refers, rendering the current page redundant. I believe I can perform these particular actions myself, but I don't want to transgress procedure or wikiquette. Is there any particular process I should go through? Can you help me with it? Thanks. Robert Sherard

Hello, not sure if this is the correct way to contact you, I've never tried posting on Wikipedia before. I recently ran a search of Robert Sherard and found a Wikipedia page of him. I noted the page was relatively brief and you had posted a request for more information back in 2005. We currently hold a manuscript he wrote titled "History of a Hoodoo", it is in effect sis biography. I have not read it for some time and once contacted a UK university whom I noted had a large collection of his works. No one there ever resonded.

Scansion redux

I've begun notes here [see now this -pw] for an updated scansion style sheet. I'll let you decide where it should go in the short term. I'm certainly not going to start altering the standards of a wikigroup (of which I'm not even a member!) without some consensus -- though I fear at this point consensus might merely be what you and I happen to agree on. So I see 3 possibilities:

1. It stays in my sandbox until ready, meanwhile we alert the talk page to go there and comment/edit. Possible risk: it will seem too private (though that is not the intent) and people could be discouraged from contributing.
2. I paste it into the talk page, which allows for discussion and edits there. Possible risk: No one wants to edit it there either, because it's viewed as my comment which normally should not be edited by others.
3. You or I start altering the actual section in the wikigroup page proper (but I've already said why this is unappealing to me at this early stage).

Then of course, if either course #1 or #2 is taken, if anyone should make contributions to the notes their authorship will be obscured by pasting it in to the main page. As collaborative as Wikipedia is, preliminary collaboration seems quite difficult to me. If you know of a better way, let's do that. Meanwhile I'm just going to putter around in my sandbox. PS: In the mean time, I've floated this idea to User:JoannaSerah, which is probably better than the above: "I wonder if a better solution wouldn't be to spin the whole section off onto its own subpage, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Poetry/Scansion Style. Then it would be publicly available for comment and editing, comments would be tied specifically to it (not to the project as a whole), and we could still link to it from the project page only after it was sufficiently vetted."
