Blocked FrescoBot

I have blocked your user:FrescoBot because it saves results when no substantial changes are made to an article - its most edits look like changing a white space. This does spam page history and watchlists. Please amend. Materialscientist (talk) 03:48, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Basilicofresco, please keep doing these changes until we empty the backlog in CHECKWIKI. The kind if spacing fixed by your bot is useful. You should run it more often than just once per month. Ancheta, thanks, but in our case (the Scientific method wiki), it was okay, and it's just as well that I stop half-embedding "pp." - maybe it could lead to unexpected problems in the future as well. I don't know whether it's correct. It was just a nicety, which helped make it a bit clearer that there was a link (especially to readers who have image-downloading turned off, as I sometimes do), especially when the linked page's number itself is a solitary little digit. Since periodic sweeps by bot users are to expected, I decided to put both "p"s outside the link - keep it simple not just for me but for one and all. And you've already gone ahead and incorporated an exception! Well, we're both accommodating. Best bet is that I'm the only person who would be so hair-splitting as to embed half a "pp." in a link, so I'd recommend dis-incorporating the exception. But thank you for the thoughtfulness of incorporating it.

Alternately, I could put "pp." entirely inside the link, but I found that unappealing from a logical standpoint, since it's a link to just one page. But maybe I could do it anyway when the page number is a single digit. Well, whatever. Meanwhile, I've already made the requisite alterations in the Charles Sanders Peirce bibliography article (which had a whole lot of such cases half-embedded "pp."s). I'll get to the other Peirce articles, where there may be cases here and there, but you don't need to wait for me if they're on your itinerary. Incidentally, thanks to your edits I found a link that was already broken, probably because of my own earlier bad editing. Well, as you can see, the "reference" was actually a fake external link to the article The Addams Family: Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt. There is no need to mask a wikilink as an external link. "Fixing" links to put the quotes outside the link brackets

I know it's one of this bot's approved functions, but I do not appreciate having links revised such as in this edit. Do you know of a MOS section, or another guideline, that calls for links to be written this way? (It's entirely possible there is such a guideline that I've never been made aware of, but I couldn't find anything about it in a quick look at the MOS.) Breaking <ref>s

Hi, it seems that when your bot encounters an external link to Wikimedia site inside a <ref> tag, it reformats it into an internal link (which is okay) but also encloses it in another <ref>, which breaks the article. Wondering about "Lowercase wikilinks to uppercase sections"

Hi, I just noticed FrescoBot's mod of the section link "[[dual number#cycles|cycles]]" to "[[dual number#Cycles|cycles]]". I was wondering whether that shouldn't be "[[Dual number#Cycles|cycles]]", i.o.w. shouldn't the article be upcased as well? Cheers, DVdm (talk) 09:56, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi! There is no need to uppercase also the first letter of the article name because it is not case sensitive (Wikipedia:Linking#Piped links). I mean [[dual number#cycles|cycles]] does not work, but [[dual number#Cycles|cycles]] or [[dual number]] works. A possible issue with FrescoBot

Hi. I think FrescoBot may have some issues creating false positives for broken section links. The articles Mayer–Vietoris sequence and Borel–Kolmogorov paradox were both tagged for WildBot's help with broken section links, but in both cases WildBot found none (and I found none either). In the first case, the article contained # characters in the "name" of a ref tag (I have since cleaned up these names); in the second case, there were links to other regions on the article (specifically, references whose anchors were created by the "cite book" template). Thank you for your message. I know, there are few false positives. It is not easy to guess any kind of possible correct (and incorrect) section link. For example <ref name="#Hatcher|Hatcher, p. 149"> has got an odd syntax and had to be replaced. I came here to say the same thing: The bot is generating many false positives. A recent example is Kill the Messenger; just one piped section link on the page (List of Castle episodes#ep18), and it works just fine.--ShelfSkewed Talk 21:27, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi! I know, there are some false positives, but it is not easy to account for any possible way to create an anchor. I'm doing my best, but as you can see for example in List of Castle episodes#ep18, there is no section named ep18 neither a standard anchor template like {{anchor}}. No standard html anchor nor a ref with that name: the anchor is generated by the template {{Episode list}} from the parameter episode number. Changing links to Wikimedia projects in references

Hi. In reference to This edit... in the rare circumstances where Wikimedia sites are used as references, they should be linked either as bare external links (what was in this article before), normal URLs in citation templates, or using the {{Srlink}} template. Because, as noted on the template I linked you to, "Srlink can be used to easily externalise cross-namespace links from article space. WP:WAWI explains why these are undesirable and break on Wikipedia mirrors." And if you click there, you'll see that when Wikipedia itself is being used, "if you link from an article to a specific Wikipedia page, use external link style, so the link will make sense in any context." In other words, a mirror / fork of Wikipedia might want to distinguish between the following two cases:

John Doe was eaten by a giant squid owned by Wikisource.

According to Wikisource, the squid was an anonymous donation that they thought was a harmless guppy, hence they should not be legally liable for the wanton destruction it visited upon San Antonio.<ref>[http://wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Our_response_to_the_squid_attack]</ref>

The first case, they in general want to make those normal links point to their own personal articles on giant squids and Wikisource. The second case it makes no sense to point the link to their own mirrored article which probably doesn't exist; it's a reference to Wikisource directly, and should remain so no matter what context it is in. FrescoBot adding WildBot templates

FrescoBot seems to be adding "WildBot, please look at this" templates to a large number of articles. While this has only resulted in discussion ([2], [3]) for physics-related articles, it's caused a complaint [4] from one of the biology project people, including a shutdown of WildBot as an interim measure.

Long story short, please don't mass-call WildBot without discussion and approval from the WikiProjects in question, as this is causing disruption in at least one case. --Christopher Thomas (talk) 19:26, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up at my page. Of course I could be wrong about any of this, but . . . Yes Basilicofresco, the watchlist issue is negligible to inconsequential-- plenty of bots do their work and it's a normal part of getting that work done to see it played out on the watchlist. The primary problem is the talk page interference. It's unlike an inline template, but rather interferes in the business of maintaining talk pages wiki-wide. Frankly, I don't think the BAG fully contemplated the implications of the last line of the most recent FrescoBot permissions request, i.e. that the end result of the two bots operating together would essentially turn WildBot from an opt-in situation to a mandatory wiki-wide function of placing templates on talk pages in the valuable page maintenance space at the top, where we set the broad context and define issues for countless busy talk pages. Possible solutioins are: turning WildBot's function into that of positioning a new talk thread rather than a template at the top, or at an absolute minimum placing any new templates below the existing templates. Also, a lot of the DAB templates placed by WildBot in response to the FrescoBot mass-requests are useless-- sometimes editors are content to link to a DAB, depending on the context of the wikilink. But I vaguely doubt this situation was fully contemplated when BAG granted the permission on this one. It would be nice to resolve it informally. Thanks for attending to these issues. ... Josh's proposed solution was to move the maintenance templates to below the existing templates used to set the fundamental page context on many of the busier talk pages. ... WildBot/tag in namespace 4 and 5

ISBN splits question.

One of the changes that Frescobot made to List of Alpha Phi Omega members was changing ISBN 0313265933 to ISBN ISBN 0-313-26593-3 . Can you let me know where the logic is for the split between the 313 with 26593 is? (to know that it shouldn't split 3132-6593 for example). Doesn't appear that it has much information on Group identifiers other than 0 and 1 (so your tool can't figure out the hyphens on non-english works), but my bet is that 90%+ of the books referenced on the English Language wikipedias are group 0 or 1. Does the Hyphenation on the 13 digit numbers work exactly the same way after the 978 is sliced off? So ISBN 9780313265938 (guessed at the check digit which turned out to be right) would become ISBN 978-0-313-26593-8 and does your tool do that splitting as well?Naraht (talk) 19:02, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Maybe it's the wording. Do the talk page messages from wildbot refer to the article or the talk page? If it's the talk page, then it's useless. If it's the article, then that's helpful. One bot tagging to call another bot

• I'm not really sure why we have one bot tagging to call another bot. Won't WildBot find the broken link eventually anyway? Alternatively, why doesn't FrescoBot just leave a note about the broken tags, rather than calling another bot to leave a note about the broken tags? This appears to offer us the advantage of having four edits appear on out Watchlists rather than just one or two. Perhaps there are other benefits unknown to me; this one is the only one I've seen so far. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 14:47, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

There are strong technical reasons for this behaviour. FrescoBot was wrote to find and fix some types of misspelled links. Josh asked me to mark any article FrescoBot was not able to fix, but there are some false positives (FrescoBot was not made for this). It means I cannot place a detailed box as WildBot does. There are things FrescoBot is not able to do and viceversa about WildBot. Please note that rewiting and testing would take days... So: yes there is a reason. However it does not mean we cannot reduce the number of edits per error. For example I could write locally a list of these articles in need of inspection and pass them to Josh. Bot making inconsistent changes

Frescobot is making inconsistent changes to chemical formulas of minerals, see humite example the bot added a space following a comma within the formula between Mg and Fe, but ignored the second instance between F and OH. The added space is incorrect. I've undone that, but there seem to be a bunch of other instances. Please fix your bot and undo such improper changes to chemical formulas. FrescoBot breaking template switch

FrescoBot just edited Template:Infobox UK place/police like this and potentially broke a #switch statement. It seems that the regex is catching a broader range of links than you probably intended. I`m confused the page already existed on en.wikipedia.org created by me in 2006 at some point someone uploaded it to commons.wikimedia.org and on the 14 April I added a Category:Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre realised that the image was of the railway and not specific to the Heritage centre so removed the Category. FYI, Darna, Captain Barbell, Dyesebel is Licensed By Individuals ok but, when you add it as a group the rival network "must" asked the rival network (GMA 7) to add them & for approval because for example Captain Barbell, GMA 7 will do a remake to the previous version of richard gutirrez which he will reprise also... "until" all are finished, the rival network (GMA 7) will make an assessment of doing an group or by two's for the said superheroes, if the network decides that they will not continue then the rival network (ABS-CBN 2) can add them make a superhero group, thats the reason why the kapamilya network can't released the showing of the show and other problems of the other characters because of schedules, and other things like production Staff... ok? Well, the main problem was that I was not aware of this exotic alternative syntax for imagemaps: now the bot is able to detect it. The second and least important problem was the mistake it attempted to fix: the wrong commas at the end of the links. Bad edits

Hi, FrescoBot continually makes edits such as this.

Basically, the reference tag is written as:

However, FrescoBot wrongly tries to fix the (unbroken) section link by changing it to this:

FrescoBot was not breaking links. As you can see the Spidey104 claim is unfounded: both edits are correct and fall within the scope of Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/FrescoBot 2. The bug reported by Smjg is the same reported on 7 June 2010 (4:45 UTC) by Hebrides. This bug was fixed on the same day (about 10:00 UTC) and affected just 8 pages. I answered Smjg in his talkpage. Please unblock FrescoBot as soon as possible, thanks. Punctuation

I don't think a bot should be making edits like this. How does the bot know whether or not the punctuation is part of the originally quoted material? Well, first of all consider it moves the punctuation only in when it founds a wikilink like "[[Missouri Compromise]]." It's not a regular quote, it's a quoted wikilink followed by a punctuation: if punctuation belong to the "quote" then it should be within the wikilink. If punctuation does not belong to the quote then it should be outside "". About the edit summary you're right. However this correction is part of a pretty large group of corrections about the "way" links are inserted: syntax, position, spacing, redundancy. Grouping them together I'm able to perform the least possible number of edits, however I have to use a less specific edit summary. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 22:41, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

FrescoBot misplacing punctuation again

I have the same objection as User talk:Basilicofresco#"Fixing" links to put the quotes outside the link brackets above.

Concerning the FrescoBot Edit at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Joseph_Henrich&diff=372444273&oldid=370332291, the "fix" goes from:

(A): Faculty profile, to

(B): Faculty profile,

IMO moving the comma to after the bracket, like (B) (with the comma after the "blank" square signalling the end of the external link) resembles the non-standard punctuation of a footnote number coming before the punctuation, like:

(C): [8], not like:

(D): ,[9]

But standard practice is for the footnote to come after punctuation, like (D). So, (B) from the Bot is deviating farther from standard practice as to footnote-like placement. I see, however we have to take into account three important facts:

1. The comma does not belong to the link;
2. it is an external link, not a footnote;
3. footnotes are different because the whole link is after the punctuation, here the punctuation was in the middle of the link.

Regrettably, I overstated my point for the example above. The same Bot did not move punctuation of "Selected publications" outside the ext. link rectangle-icon (& properly so from my argument above), on which see Joseph Henrich#Selected publications.

Please allow me to make a milder point as applicable to Ext. links sections. Putting the comma before the rectangle-icon that signals an ext. link allows the reader to see the comma right after the word preceding -- normal practice. That's what the reader expects. Having the ext. link icon rectangle come right after the word introduces an unnecessary break before the comma. If the reader clicks the rectangle-icon, it is similar to a fn. link in the text: the reader ends up at the link, just as clicking the fn. number in the text takes the reader to the fn. So, there is a welcome parellism between the icon and the fn. number. And there is arguably no reason to treat them differently. A substantial number of links on this page to other wikis have been altered by FrescoBot and I'm not sure the result is desirable.

Next to redlink entries in this list I had deliberately added links to other wikis in external link format in order to produce compact, autonumbered references, for example:

Now changed to:

Frescobot changes a link in the wrong way when running on the "Bounded variation" entry

Hello, I am writing you just to say that when applied to the entry Bounded variation, Frescobot changes a correct link i.e. [[Lp_space#Lp spaces|<math>L^1(\Omega)</math> norm]] to a wrong one [[Lp_space#lp spaces|<math>L^1(\Omega)</math> norm]]. It has operated this change two times, as you can see from the history of the entry, but the first time I did not gave importance to it, so only reverted its edit. Now I have slightly changed the link ([[Lp space#Lp spaces|<math>L^1(\Omega)</math> norm]] is the new form) hoping that the problem disappears, and I also decided to tell you the story. Be', devo confessarti una cosa Caro il mio basilico (domani mi faccio un pesto ;) però non mi viene voglia di scherzare...), anzi una storia. Tutto è stato bello sin dall'inizio, anzi, in Luglio e Agosto erano i miei mesi preferiti, sopratutto di come erano fertili... e belli. Ho notato sin da Luglio Francisco Loviglio, e da quando ho collaborato con lui le cose sono calate immediatamente. Ti faccio un ordine cronologico:

• Il 31 Agosto vedo Francisco;
• Dieci giorni a ridere e a scherzare;
• Lo contattò un certo "tikary" che successivamente finì nei problematici, e così dissi una cosa così: "Lo conosco tikary, è amico di francisco" e quella frase che ha fatto traboccare il vaso proprio per la sfortuna di incontrare "dome" prima ero autonomo, poi mi sono gasato troppo con francisco. L'ho inserito nel mio vocabolario: Francisco adesso per me vuol dire "Fine di un impero, distruzione assoluta". Dome è quello che mi ha segnalato nei UP.
• Supero il limite dell'esagerato poiché mi sento più forte con francisco, e succede il contrario, gli UP.

E così che successe :'( Gli UP sono stati per me come una grande pugnalata al cuore, per questo voglio dirti chi è che ho collaborato, aiutato delle voci.

• Gregorovius, in genere sembrerebbe malvagio perché penserebbe che io sia un vandal troll, ma in genere è un tenerone se ci sono utentesse o admin.
• Gac, anche lui fa' un buon lavoro, ma mi fa' arrabbiare tanto il fatto che blocchi senza motivo a volte, e che rollbacki senza motivo solo perché è un vandalo oppure openproxy, ma fa un buonissimo lavoro.

Mr. Dayanand Nadkarni was an apponted clerk at Kanara Welfare Trust. It's mentioned in the writeup as the founder. Mr. Dinakar Desai was the founder who hired Nadkarni to take care of the books. Dayananad Nadkarni's participation in the Independence of India is not true. Your bot is making unnecessary edits

Well, IMHO it was not unnecessary (useless piping is forbidden, the fix is part of the Check Wiki project, the source text is more readable and errors are spotted easier). You got it backwards. The unnecessary edit changed [[return code]] to [[Return_code|return code]]. I undid it and now he's redone it again! This isn't even an article Basilicofresco even contributes to. Why is his 'bot' running around scribbling on work other people are trying to do? It makes no sense and makes even less sense that when his bot's stupid change has been reverted that he'll go back to insist restoring it again. I have just undone it once more. Do it again and he'll have an edit war you will not not win. Keep your fingers off an article someone's working on unless you have something meaningful to contribute, please. Are you serious, or just rather confused?

• The article (which is open for editing by anybody) "began" here, with [[Return_code|return code]] in two places.
• Then the bot came, and changed the piped links to [[return code]]. The change was meant to be helpful, and had to go through an approval process before it did it.
• Then you changed it back to [[Return_code|return code]], calling the previous revision an "idiot bot edit". Before doing so, you stormed in here to suggest that the bot is defective.
• The bot operator then read your complaint, adjusted the formatting of my interjection, studied the situation, and manually repeated the change FrescoBot had made, presumably because he saw it as a helpful change.
• You then reverted again, but not before posting here to threaten an edit war and inappropriately claim ownership of the article.

I recommend you reserve your bluster and threats until you're sure you've got the sequence of edits correct. Then, if you're really sure you are right about what links the article should have, you should ... still keep the threats to yourself. But I assume you're just confused, so take another look (and a few deep breaths). — JohnFromPinckney (talk)

FrescoBot making edits contrary to Wiki Bot policy

Hi, I continuously find edits like this [16], which simply change [[Link|links]] into [[link]]s, a change which seems completely useless and has no implications for templates or other things.
I read in Wikipedia:Bot_policy#Cosmetic_changes that "Cosmetic changes should only be applied when there is a substantial change to make at the same time."

Well, they are missing spaces between words and they actually change the aspect of the page. The second one was approved in Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/FrescoBot_2:

FrescoBot issue

I have noticed several edits like [17] on my watchlist lately. That particular change to piped links is not actually a syntax issue (and does not appear to be covered by the FrescoBot BRFA). There's no need to make just that change to an article; it just litters watchlists without changing the appearance of the article at all. Before BRFA, I asked for comments about this proposal and there was no objections. I hope you will. This morning I have several more on my watchlist, like [19]. I don't object if you do then when you are also fixing some actually broken link (the things in the original BRFA) but some things in BRFA 7 are not actually problems that warrant fixing on their own. Fixing something that didn't need fixing

Well, the matter is a bit more complex: the link was working, but it was not fine. As you can see, there was a section wikilink to "Game misconduct#Match penalty", but Game misconduct is a redirect and points to a different section: Penalty (ice hockey)#Game misconduct penalty. Well the problem with the conversion of a link like "[22]" at the end of the sentence (looking like a reference, used as reference) is that I cannot replace it with a simple wikilink because then I would "insert" an extraneous word between two sentences. Fully understood. It is too bad however, that some edits (such as the example I've provided above) still require some sort of human involvement after the fact. From my own experience, I feel that most of the time when wikilinks are added in full URL form, they are done so mainly by inexperienced contributors who haven't yet mastered the art of wiki-markup when casually cross-linking between articles. The few that I see who intentionally reference to other wiki-articles are usually not aware that such referencing is considered invaluable to the project, and usually stop doing it once someone brings it to their attention. On the other hand, I assume that some may think it's perfectly acceptable to keep doing it if that's what they see the bots doing (newbie see/newbie do). Don't get me wrong though, as I do have a great appreciation for all the good your bot does, and it's not my intention to complain as much as it is to throw fresh ideas and a bit of POV your way. Perhaps this is something that you could keep in the back of your mind, and maybe try to work into the routine sometime in the future if/when you ever see an opportunity or convenient way to do so. In case you wonder what t do with Taxobox, this edit shows the solution. Soon we add the same feature in AWB. Selflinks inside Taxobox must be in bold. Fixes to WP:LDR

Hello,

Please note that merging all the LDR citations together into an unmanageable blob really does not help us editors at all; quite the contrary. I'm referring to this edit. Per WP:LDR:

Any blank lines placed between the citations in a reflist will make no difference to the download size or output format of an article. Thus, for ease of editing and article maintenance, it can be helpful to separate the citations using a blank line between each cite.

If you could manage to modify the bot so that it avoids unnecessarily contracting the LDR's in this manner, it would be appreciated. Thank you.—RJH (talk) 19:59, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

link syntax

FrescoBot did one of its usual edits to Kilogram, like this one, where it converted [[meter per second squared|meter per second squared]] to [[meter per second squared]] on the premise that the latter points to a redirect page that, in turn, takes the reader to the correct page. Unfortunately, anytime there is a redirect, this wording is at the top of the page: “(Redirected from Meter per second squared)”. I think this is unnecessary, ugly, and looks like an error was made (a link that wasn’t updated after an article was moved) that had to be corrected.

I’m sure there was some discussion (now perhaps located in Village Pump Archive 6,626,208) where coders and programers and developers who are interested in ultra-tight code that fully exploits the behind-the-scenes capabilities of Wikipedia’s server engines—as well as those interested in saving the Wikimedia foundation 0.000000001¢ of server space—who have discussed the subject of links and redirects and think this aspect of FrescoBot is cool-beans. But I wasn’t part of that discussion. I occasionally receive reactions from long-timers who write something like (*sigh*) This was discussed [by all of six editors who hang out endlessly] at the Pump and the consensus [by four of the six of us] was that this was an indisputably Good Idea©™® and you should think the same way. I’m sure there are scores, if not hundreds, of other editors who don’t even know of the venues where bot operators hang out, have never heard of Village Pump, and don’t like links being un-piped in a fashion that makes the target page a re-direct.

In my view, redirects pages are primarily of value to fix old links made before an article was moved (renamed), and for common misspellings manually typed into the Search field by readers. I don’t think it looks at all good for a reader to click a link and be taken to a page that has “(Redirected from…)” at the top; it looks like an error was made.

I’m not requesting that you revise the way FrescoBot operates. I would, however, appreciate it if you can advise if there is a {no-bot} tag or magic word or something that will prevent FrescoBot from working its magic on the Kilogram article. Failing that, is there a convenient, built-in facility that allows you to just tell FrescoBot to avoid Kilogram? 16:51, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

FrescoBot changed for example [[meter per second squared|meter per second squared]] in [[meter per second squared]] because, as you can read here, this kind of piped link is discuraged by Wikipedia's guidelines. The guideline doesn’t address this situation. The stated purpose at WP:Piped link is as follows: It is generally not good practice to pipe links simply to avoid redirects. The number of links to a redirect page can be a useful gauge of when it would be helpful to spin off a subtopic of an article into its own page. (my underlining)

The underlined objective (determining when a subtopic needs to be made) isn’t an issue here since it is a spelling-related issue and there is already a redirect page. I just don’t know how I could have better explained my concern in my above post. As I wrote there, I understand the reader is taken to the same article. As I also wrote, This wording is at the top of the page: “(Redirected from Meter per second squared)”. FrescoBot did not make any edit in order to improve (or avoid) the use of redirects. Are you able to read a page history? Yes, I can read history files. And I did, too, in this case. FrescoBot certainly did too make an edit that I am talking about. It is this one, which I had provided in my first post here. As you can see, the accompanying edit summary is “(Bot: links syntax)”. And the result was to create this link: meter per second squared, which—if you click on it—takes one to the correct page but with a redirect notice at the top, which looks poor and sloppy in my opinion. It is not how I want articles I work on to operate.

I see from the provided link that one “should not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken”. It further states that doing so “can actually be detrimental”. Just how in the world is piping a link so that A) an article consistently uses one dialect, which WP:MOS recommends, and B) to avoid a redirect statement across the top, “detrimental” in any way, shape, or form?? In fact, there is zero—zip—harm in piping; the properly piped link avoids having what amounts to an error adviso placed at the top and nothing else.

Now, please try to keep a cool head with your answer. Also, you might also flat answer a question I’ve now asked twice and am here asking for a third time: Is there a tag or magic word I can place in the article to keep your bot from operating there or is there a way you can program your bot to avoid the Kilogram article? Well, now we’re going in circles. That’s going to end. All the information you need is in the article’s history file. “Metre” is indeed another spelling, but not in American-dialect English. When I last left it, the article was in this state of affairs and had things correct and consistent; the article was written consistently in one English dialect (*sound of audience gasp*) and all links routed the reader to articles with no redirects (*sound of audience gasp*). That’s good, tidy practice and is what all authors should strive for. Things got screwed up because an I.P. editor (from Canada: go figure) came in and changed things to a mix of American and British dialect (meter to metre, ∆ edit here) in a series of six edits. Then User:Martinv misinterpreted what was going on, changed things some more, and then undid his edits. Now…

The first major contributor to that article consistently used American English and, per WP:MOS, the use of a particular dialect should be consistent.

Yes, I know there is “no shame” in redirection. Nothing I wrote above suggests that’s my concern, yet you’ve mentioned that twice now, which comes across at minimum as patronizing, and at worst as baiting with a “Well, there’s no shame and I’m gonna keep doing whatever I want to.” My above posts could not possibly be clearer that I think redirects look like sloppy work—simply because that’s precisely what causes redirects in many cases. We actually have specialist editors who run about creating redirects for common misspellings. It speaks to the shortcomings of working in a collaborative writing environment where 6th graders get to join in. Contrary to WP:Redirects, there is absolutely nothing “detrimental” to piping links to achieve dialect consistency and to ensure the reader is taken straight to the proper article; nothing at all. I asked you to point out a downside to the practice and you declined to answer or were unable to.

I’ve asked you politely now three times about whether there is a no-bot tag I could put in the article to ward off your bot and you’ve ducked the question three times. I am loathe to ask you again since you seem to actually relish conflict—partly borne from not reading, parsing, and fully understanding what others write. So why not just put the Kilogram article on your “avoid” list so we don’t have to cross paths again? Wikipedia is a big place and I’m sure you can find plenty of things to improve without going to a fully mature article where all the ‘i’s have been dotted and all the ‘T’s crossed just so we can start pissing in each other’s corn flakes. FrescoBot did not change the target of any link, it simply clean the syntax in order to better spot linking errors... so it should help you too. The change is no more, no less, one of the general fixes of AWB. The change is totally neutral as I do not see that either the underlying link or the displayed text were changed in any way, but does simplify the display in edit mode. OTOH, one might query a change from[[metre per second squared|meter per second squared]] to [[meter per second squared]], as it appears Greg is doing – hypothetical here, I know. Although Greg may consider it sloppy, I see this would be a legitimate and rather appropriate use of redirect to deal with national varieties of English. During my gnoming, I often have cause to change spelling variants. And it does not upset me not to see the piping changed, knowing that the target link would still lead to where it was desired. Frescobot and Commons categories

The bot is adding these boxes to several Michigan highway articles. Two issues are at work here. One is that many of these categories hold single photos. Two is that if all of the photos are already in the article, the category was intentionally not added to the article. I've only ever added the boxes when there are more images for that subject than what the article can hold. Such automated editing though has brought to my attention all of the articles who have categories that don't need them, so I can have the categories deleted on Commons. In my humble opinion there is nothing wrong with placing {{Commons cat}} when there are no additional images on Commons. First of all the number of (well categorized) images on Commons is going to grow, secondly the link can be useful to editors in order to 1)spot new pictures, 2)easily find the correct category where upload new contents, 3)help Commons users to process uncategorized images. Section link fix actually breaking things

Edits by the bot like this actually break the link. The reference in the Works cited section is using "Hyde" as the tag, not "hyde", so when your bot has gone through and changed it to all lower case, the link in the References section no longer works to the full reference in the Works cited section. Except that there aren't different refs. There's only one footnote to the Hyde book (for which you just renamed in the <ref> tag. The bot has done similar stuff to M-35 (Michigan highway) like this edit. Please look into the causes, as I'm sure I'm not the only one that uses all lowercase reference names consistently. Because of their policy of mimicking en.wp names, and because they were mostly created by bot, so would be perfectly accurate, I reckon it represents about 99% accuracy or more. Thank you for all your good work in fixing section links with FrescoBot. May I suggest a possible enhancement? In some cases, such as 115 (number), WildBot had tagged the talk page with {{WildBot/m04}} to list the broken section links in Category:Pages containing links with bad anchors. Do you think it would be useful and possible for FrescoBot to remove this tag automatically whenever it fixes the last broken section link(s) on a page? Section links

I'm not sure what happened here but the links were/are working before the bot changed them. If you look at the first line it changed, the first link is to Curtiss-Wright C-46 Commando, the top of the article. The next link was a piped link, [[Curtiss-Wright C-46 Commando#C-46A|C46A-45CU]] (Curtiss-Wright C-46 Commando#C-46A) which the bot changed to [[Curtiss-Wright C-46 Commando#C-46|C46A-45CU]] (Curtiss-Wright C-46 Commando#C-46). I had already made this edit to the target article so that the section links would work. The bot made all the links direct to the top of the target article. The purpose of giving the full url in a link in the attribution of an image, such as the one (of many) you removed here, is that is the form that can easily be used by an external party reusing the image. The bottom line is that the attribution I have provided is part of the licence which allows Wikipedia to use the image. Wikipedia has no right to alter the licence without my permission. Wikipedia's alternatives are to ask me to provide a new licence or to reject the licence as unacceptable and delete the image. Tinkering with the licence is a breach of copyright and not allowed. You are right, some hours ago I add few additional checks and I did not expect so many wrong spaces. It was a test run in order to evaluate if it was a feasible approach, but they are too many trivial edits. I made a test run instead a simulation because nevertheless they are mistakes, so it is not a big problem. I will move the trivial corrections to my custom mix of cosmetic changes. I can add the toothbrush moustache to the esclusion list, but in my opinion it is better to avoid such a fake external link in order to get an embedded citation look. Well, I just made five edits without that link in the edit summary. :) Full story: I was exploring a new bunch of misspellings and I used a special script. I did not expect to make any edit so I did not take care of the link in the edit summary. Nevertheless one problem was so rare that I fixed it manually (replace.py edit mode) since I was not going to include a fix for it in any regular task. I read that general notice to bot owners and fully agree: two years ago I stressed this issue in the it.wiki bot policy. I try to be as much informative as possible (while appling as much corrections at once as possible). Commas in citations

I think that when there is a citation which involved "pp. 123,135" it is a mistake to put a space in like this "pp. 123, 135". Now this may be a personal choice, but it is a question of aesthetics and I do not think a bot should go around changing from one to the other.

Also it raises the question if the added space us going to be put in should not be non-breaking space?

As I suspected it is not a matter of aesthetics. I asked the opinion of other Wikipedia users here and here and they all agree that between two page numbers after the comma is needed a space. One of them explained the absence of a specific rule in Wikipedia as "Common sense and a very elementary knowledge of English are all that are needed. Some things are so obvious that they are not in the canon of MoS". Moreover, as you can see, "123,135" is ambiguous because it actually looks like a number above one hundred thousand. Uhmm... I'm not sure a mistake like a "double boldface usually not shown due a bug within Wikimedia software" is something we have to preserve in order to keep some kind of aesthetic similitude along the arguments of two different templates ({{Uir/adoc}} and {{Uir/fdoc}}). Wikimedia software behaviour could change in the future and this minor problem fixed. Moreover your are talking about maintenance: are you really going to change these templates again after their creation? Please reconsider your request. I mean: in my opinion it make absolutely no sense to deliberately reintroduce within these templates a mistake. Nevertheless if you really feel that my edits are a serious problem to your routine maintenance and disrupt the beauty of your code... well I can reintroduce the broken syntax for you. Ps. Additive synthesis

FrescoBot recently made minor changes (diff) to the Additive Synthesis article. I'd like to discuss one change. In the timeline table, on the rightmost column "DOB and AFB appear in <ref>" got changed to "DOB and AFB appear in<ref>". The original notation is intended as a shorthand for "DOB and AFB appear in The New Sound of Music<ref>". The title is omitted to keep the table compact. Removing the space between "in" and "<ref>" changed the meaning of the sentence. Other articles might have something similar such as "(see also <ref>", which should be handled similarly. I could not find instructions in Manual of Style on how to write things like these, so maybe you have a suggestion or can change the bot so that it does not remove the space. The changes to the two headers instead were pretty cosmetic: there were some trailing spaces at the end of the line. Header cleanup and few others simple cosmetic checks (not from cosmetic_changes.py) are performed only after a substantial edit. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 05:42, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Removing trailing spaces from headers is more than cosmetic. There is a bug in MediaWiki 1.19 where if you edit a section which has one or more trailing spaces on the header line, the edit summary is not pre-filled. Removing the trailing spaces will fix this for the next edit to that section. Correcting links in templates

Hi! Regarding this edit -- the bot really shouldn't be fixing templates without supervision (at least not all of the cases). There are perfectly good cases when it is appropriate to have something that may be incorrect in articles. I believe the task was implied to be approved for mainspace. If you think this happens very rarely, and too many templates will go unfixed if you disable it, I can change brackets to html entity counter-parts. Ciao Basilicofresco. Beh, se guardi bene non è detto che «In effetti le cose stanno così» come hai ipotizzato. Qui lo spiego bene. In estrema sintesi:

1. Ho portato fonti (Enciclopedia Treccani, Enciclopedia dello Sport) a sostegno della correttazza del lemma "Lancio del giavellotto".
2. Il contrario non è stato fatto.
3. È stato detto che il "throw" inglese (riferito ai tre lanci: giavellotto, martello e disco), fosse riferito anche a peso. Ma non è vero perché si dice "shot put".
4. FIDAL, CONI, Gazzetta dello Sport e RAI da sempre nei loro almanacchi, nelle trasmissioni o nei loro articoli parlano di "lancio del giavellotto". Idem per i tabellini di tutte le gare nazionali.
5. Se vai al lemma it:giavellotto, spiega chiaramente che dalla notte dei tempi questa è una it:lancia (arma), e come tale si...lancia appunto, non si tira.

Insomma più scarsi sono gli argomenti a sostegno di "tiro del giavellotto". La "presunzione" con cui è stato deciso AUTONOMAMENTE (senza consultre la comunità), lo spostamento del lemma e di decine e decine di voci che stavano lì da 8 anni (fegandosene pure di sistemare i redirect), è fastidiosa. Bot incorrectly removes bold formatting from album name in chronology

In the chronology section of the infobox for an album's article, the name of the album itself should have both italic and bold formatting. Sometimes editors (myself included) incorrectly add the bold formatting by wikilinking the album's name instead of using three extra quotes on either side of it. Unfortunately ‎FrescoBot only partly fixes the problem, leaving the album title italic, but not bold — see this edit (which I have already fixed) http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=In_the_Spotlight&curid=33208674&diff=503895485&oldid=503364779

To fix the problem properly, the bot needs to add extra quotes when it deletes the square brackets. Organizing a cluttered reflist: Need your help

I'm currently editing the "Aitken Spence" wikipedia page and need help organizing the reference list. At the moment, all the references are clustered together. I want to separate the referencing into following sections: History, Corporate Governance,and Hotels. So that readers can easily identify which references that relate to similar content. I'm also hoping to add more content in the future on different areas, so if you could advise me on how this could be done, I would most appreciate it.

Hi, I checked my edit and I'm not able to find any problem with it. Actually you removed the link to the source.

1. The text was: <ref>[http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Author:Paul_George_Konody]</ref> and therefore the footnote looked like this "[32]", pretty obscure
2. FrescoBot converted the link to the standard interwiki syntax: <ref>[[s:Author:Paul George Konody]]</ref> and the footnote became "s:Author:Paul George Konody" (please note that here you are able to see with the s: that the link points Wikisource)
3. Then you removed the footnote and replaced it with: "(so described at the page of wikisource for Paul_George_Konody)".

I'm going to revert your edit in order to restore the link to Wikisource. Moreover there are wrong underscores and Wikisource is not capitalized. If you feel I'm missing something in your remark, please feel free to write me again. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 14:03, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Another user in es:WP has noted a mistake in an interwiki. In spanish exist es:Felipe, who may link with en:Philip (name); however, bots link it with en:Filippo, but already exist es:Filippo. Hill 70 edit

I looked at you recent edit but found it difficult to see what had been edited at times. An example is </ref> where there is a coloured bar after the > on the edit summary or a square coloured block. Is there somewhere on Wiki which explains things like this? I noticed too that Predicted fire was changed to predicted. (talk page stalker) Assuming that you are referring to this edit, most of it is removal of superfluous spaces, either at the ends of lines or where two spaces had been used when one would have done. The change of [[Predicted fire|predicted fire]] to [[predicted fire]] is, as you surmise, because the case of the first letter is unimportant: see Help:Link#Wikilinks where it states "The link target is case-sensitive except for the first character ..." --Redrose64 (talk) 19:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Not sure what you mean by "a letterbox with a minus sign"; but there is an explanation of page diffs at Help:Diff. Text removed is shown on the left with an orange background, and at this edit I see several cases where there is an orange background but no text over that background, such as in the middle of a line "15 August  to 25 August 1917" or at the end of a line "p. 297</ref> ". There are a couple of empty narrow rectangles with a + and a - sign. In some big rectangles with chunks of text there is a black outline also with + and - but I can't see an amendment. Obviously when someone edits things I have written, I look so I can learn from them but as usual when I look for a wiki guide it's useless; only the ones recommended by other people help (they usually assume too much knowledge to be helpful to me).
