Proposed deletion of Havo voor Muziek en Dans edit

The article Havo voor Muziek en Dans has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Havo is a high school type in the Netherlands. No claim made why this school is notable.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. SpeakFree (talk)(contribs) 17:53, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

I don't exactly agree that all high schools are notable apart from the one I went to so many years ago, but this one seems unusual and important. Codarts and Introdans could use some work to give context. I may mess around with them. Aymatth2 (talk) 01:46, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
The Havo article is probably near its limit, but there is a lot of potential with the parent Codarts and the network of associated people. I am going to ignore dead soccer players and focus on living filmmakers, jazz musicians etc. More interesting to me. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:03, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Since you started it maybe you should nom it, along with Codarts. Not that I am trying to get out of doing reviews, far from it, that would be the last thing on my mind, just thinking you should get the credit. Aymatth2 (talk) 18:32, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

I apologize edit

I apologize if I came across that I was associating you with one line stub articles. That was definitely not my intention. Drmies asked me to look at previous ANI cases that you were associated with that involved stubs. I believe Drmies left a message at your talk page about your opinion. I also saw Boleyn involved in the same ANI messes. ANI messes being redundant because anything at ANI is a mess... Boleyn's case was different as there was other "issues" involved, so I didn't want to bring Boleyn up. I have not been involved in any discussion before about one line stubs and I was unaware that you had been involved until I read the ANI. I recall seeing your name before, but it does not stand out, so I don't remember if we have had any interaction. I again apologize if I have offended you. Bgwhite (talk) 21:53, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

  • If anyone needs to apologize it's me since I mentioned Ernst's name--but not as a creator of stubs, but as someone who has been around longer than most other people (including me). Thanks Bg and Ernst. BTW, Bg, did you know that Dr. Blofeld is responsible for such indispensable pieces of knowledge as Mésaventure van een Fransch heertje zonder pantalon aan het strand te Zandvoort? How did you ever live without it? Drmies (talk) 23:09, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

I very much appreciate your response, both of you out of respect. No offense taken I just think I'm known by a lot of people primarily for creating useless stubs or supporting poor quality on wikipedia which is sad. I genuinely want us to have 50 million GA standard articles! Well I have created an excessive amount of poor stubs in the past but there was a reason for doing so. If you approach the project in a "we must be as comprehensive as possible" kind of approach and see us in terms of what is missing and that we must be working towards it at all costs then you can understand the drilling approach I favored in past out of sheer desperation of trying to get content onto here I don't have the time to write myself. But at the same time I want us to be a quality encyclopedia and we have a duty to provide information, so empty placeholder stubs whilst the idea is that people translate content for instance, if they are created with no content whatsoever then in the meantime they are useless. And the problem is that some topics which you'd think would have a lot of interest especially German world topics, nobody is doing the translating. If you can create stubs with a few sourced facts which resemble brief entries in a book encyclopedia then this is positive. I've been doing a lot of browsing and sourcing recently and I believe that referencing and proper reference formatting is improving. But we need thousands of more decent active editors to achieve what we really want. No offense taken, although Bb's comment I found very nasty and uncalled for and purely negative, but I know a lot of people don't understand my vision for wikipedia. If I did create a stub on a Syrian art historian or Turkish art historian I did so because I saw a a lot of mentions in google books which indicated to me they were notable in their fields... Günsel Renda for instance I see no problems with that stub and wouldn't consider it of "dubious quality"♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:10, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

German world topics edit

Hello again. I was interested in your comment that there were lots of articles on German world topics requiring translation. Unfortunately, when I look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki/German, I am overwhelmed at the huge lists of articles requiring translation in all of the categories. Most of the ones I turned up at random could hardly be classified as "world topics". Perhaps some of us would be more enthusiastic about translating the more important ones if we could find lists of priorities and some indication of the quality of the German original. A lot of time can be wasted looking at the originals of articles if they themselves only contain a line or two or are badly referenced. Some of those I found under Culture turned out to be old TV programmes of little interest to English-speakers anyway. I don't know whether any of this could be automated but I suspect other editors who can translate from German (or from other languages) have found it equally frustrating going through the lists at the Intertranswiki project. Any suggestions? Any chance of establishing a top 10 (or top 100) in the various categories? That might get things moving in the right direction. - Ipigott (talk) 10:29, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your quite response on this. I agree with you that in the best of all possible worlds, Wikipedia coverage should be as comprehensive a possible in all languages. Nevertheless, I do frequently come across really deserving topics (currently French painters) which are missing from the English Wikipedia but are covered in some detail in several of the other language versions. In many cases, it is also relatively easy to find good source material on the web. I therefore think it is far more worthwhile to spend two or three hours a day on these than on topics less likely to be of interest to those consulting the English WP. That was why I was so interested in your claim that there were lots of "world topics" in the German WP which need to be covered in English. Do you know what they are? In any case, next time you come across one, let me know. Maybe there could be an area of your Intertranswiki project which could allow people to post topics from othe languages which appear important for English. I often come across them myself. - Ipigott (talk) 11:06, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

AfD edit

I cast my decision on this - no way in hell an article in that state deserves to stay. We at the FOOTY project already get too much stick from disgruntled editors with a chip on their shoulder over decent articles on players with a verified and good claim to notability, let alone things like that. GiantSnowman 13:00, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

DYK edit

For DYK, is it acceptable to rely on references that have been checked as part of the FA process in another language, but which is offline and you have no access to? For example, I just created Montérolier - Buchy Line to Saint-Saëns, which is a french FA. Thanks.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 18:54, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Mmm, personally I'd permit it and assume good faith, providing it isn't the source for the hook. Nautrally though sources should be verified by yourself but I've done it many times and don't see a problem with it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:57, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

So I can use them for the main body of the article, as long as they meet WP:RS, but need to find my own source for a hook?--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 19:06, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm sure a lot of people would say all sources must be verifiable. But I had a conversation with Aymatth2 a while back about assuming good faith on such matters, especially if the article is high quality on another wiki. I wouldn't mention the source at DYK if you were you..♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:14, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Okay. Mum's the word. :) --Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 19:15, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Though you might want to know, that our Saint Senara and Church of Saint Senara, Zennor dual nom has been approved as the bottom hook in one of the prep areas, the Saint Senara problems having been resolved. Also, seeing as I've got 6 (soon to be 8) DYK credits, and am about to nom Montérolier - Buchy Line to Saint-Saëns, probably tomorrow, I guess I have to start QPQ reviewing. I have Template:Did you know nominations/Timna Airport already, but any top tips?--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 20:48, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

One asks why it takes a whole month for a hook to be approved' Way too long, I'm tiring of some of the people are DYK, they impose barriers which are unnecessary.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:03, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Translation links edit

Now the translation links are not automatically generated, but need an article= parameter. I made this change because along with the good links, there were nonsense ones (when the articles didn't have the same titles) that were automatically generated. Helpful Pixie Bot supplies the article links within a short time period. However, Rich Farmbrough may be banned from using automation which I think would be the end of Helpful Pixie Bot... So I'm not sure if we should look for a new bot operator or just go back to the old way... Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:21, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I don't think something like that is appropriate as a seperate article, but should instead form a section in existing season articles i.e. 2011–12 Premier League#Top scorers. GiantSnowman 08:33, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Carl Holzmann edit

I think I've just about completed work on this one although it turned out to be far more than proofreading. I think in future I'll work directly from the original text rather than try to improve on the Google translation. The mistranslations often appear to be correct but are in fact way off. I also removed the reference to the work on Anatolian archaeology which must be by another Holzmann. There is no reference to it in the official biography here. BTW, feel free to reply to my messages here - I'm watching. And if you want to leave messages on my own talk page, please use a new section at the bottom of the page. Re: Châteaux in Lot (department) edit

It seems we discussed the castle/château issue in 2008. I have now created Category:Castles in France as well as sub-categories for regions such as Category:Castles in Alsace. I have not made categories for Departments: it seemed to me that whereas Cat:Castles in France would be unmanageably large without subcategories, there would be far too many subs if there was one for each department. However, if you think that would be useful you should find it easier now that the regional cats are in place.

I have begun to edit castles articles from List of castles in France to either add a Castles in... category or to replace a Chateaux in.... category if the article is clearly about a castle. There will be a number of articles where the subject is a castle that has become a château and these will need both types of category. So far I have completed Alsace and made a start on Aquitaine.

I hope this goes some way to meet your initial request. Emeraude (talk) 14:15, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Madhubala2.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Madhubala2.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Lovy Singhal (talk) 11:24, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

I think its superfluous. A prose summary is always preferred, one does not need to lists school subjects in an article about the county council, there are masses of other topics they deal with.. At the end of March, you redirected Nkan to Ntoum and changed to text of Nkoum to refer only to Nkan. As far as I can tell, these are truly two distinct places, with different locations and slightly different population figures (they follow each other in the list of populated places, perhaps that's where the confusion stems from). Can you check this and if I'm correct undo your changes? Fram (talk) 10:22, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

They are extremely close, in an urban area all together, so much that they could qualify as a twin town, that was why. Google maps says Nkan, bing says Ntoum I think. I have a strong feeling they are the same place and if not I feel they are so close its pointless having separate articles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:48, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

According to the French Wikipedia, they are about 100km apart though. 0° 42′ S 9° 59′ E (Nkan) vs. 0° 22′ 00″ N 9° 46′ 00″ E (Ntoum). Fram (talk) 11:57, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

I thik there's two Nkan's, that's why. I'll have to look into it. Yes Nkan and Ntoum twin towns see Bing. Must be another too, I'll look on geonames.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:58, 23 May 2012 (UTC) Yep checked geonames. One settlement called Nkan in Gabon. Several with Ntoum.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:01, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

spanish/catalan edit

Just to avoid cluttering ANI even more... What I meant is not that they should be expanded from catalan in stead of castillan, but that we have several duplicate articles, which require redirecting... I have done it in the examples mentioned... ...And still hope we can come to an acceptable solution that would keep Jaguar on board... L.tak (talk) 13:39, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

I am gathering census data right now to at least save them. If certian other people would cooperate. I detest ANI like the plague, I'd much rather discuss things amicably on my or somebody's talk page. ANI has a habit of spawning unnecessary conversation because of taunts.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:47, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Graeme Bartlett (talk) 08:03, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for including me in the credits for this. I hardly deserve it for the few minor changes I made. Thanks too for including the colons in the categories in one of my recent drafts. I knew this worked but I usually just left out some of the square bracketsnto guard against their inclusion in the cat listings. But the colons do provide an easy way of checking whether the categories already exist. – Ipigott (talk) 09:16, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
As for the painters, don't worry too much. I'll get around to the more important ones sooner or later. I've actually added quite a few French painter biographies on the Pont-Aven community over the past week or two although most of them were not in the French Wikipedia or on my list of red links. The same is true for some of the key additions on Danish sculptors I've started, hoping to cover more of the red links in the article on Danish sculpture. Unfortunately, owing to Danish law on FOP, for the more recent sculptors it's very difficult to include illustrations and the Danish data bases are set up so as to make it impossible to provide URLs directly to lists or photos of artists' works. BTW, have you been following the Monmouthpedia story? This looks to me to be an excellent way of encouraging wider participation in Wikipedia and easier access from smart phones. I was wondering if it would be wise to start initiatives in other countries, e.g. Norway, Denmark and Luxembourg, based on the Monmouth experience. I have a feeling much could be done by pooling the freely accessible resources from Geocaching (which are usually both in English and the local language) with those from Wikipedia (possibly in both directions). I've also been in contact with the project leader on the matter. I would appreciate your reactions. - Ipigott (talk) 12:13, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
To look things up on your mobile your need to know the name of the building or whatever, you then have to find Wikipedia, turn up the keyboard and type the correct name in your own language. With the QR code, you go straight there. Within a year or two, we'll see these codes all over the place for all kinds of applications. So let's make a start now. You didn't comment on Geocaching. Any views? The articles people write there are often much more detailed than those in Wikipedia. And millions of kids are out Geocaching every day - and adding content of their own. - Ipigott (talk) 14:03, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Nomination of Licht (film) for deletion edit

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Licht (film) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Licht (film) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Notifying you as User:Neanderd did not. If he had had more than 13 life-edits,[9] he might not have overlooked you. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 04:26, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

My own original confusion was that the name of purported director and actors in what was first nominated,[10] as well as the IMDB page then-linked, leading me on a chase to the wrong film. Your work since notification is absolutely exemplary... thus, the following...

It actually hadn't occurred to me before and it really got me thinking about why so many editors feel the need to slate the efforts of others without constructive comment at ANI, especially when they've obviously done a tremendous amount of good. Its not that they have just have a problem with stubs its the way they approach it and the focus on the worst articles or traits of people rather than the positive which leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. The likelihood is that they cannot help but be like that and naturally lack empathy because they have Aspergers or something. I didn't know anything about it until I read that Mark Zuckerberg had it and in reading the article i was thinking, mmm, this sums up half the regular ANI commentators/ wiki gods... ♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:54, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Hmm. I've seen them do things like that, a lot. I don't often go and have my say at ANI or AN, like when I was taken to both of them myself. On the second one I didn't even comment. *zzz* *sleep* *zzz*. --Thine Antique Pen (talkcontributions) 07:02, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Tribute to a WikiGod edit

am loath to post on the ANI page, a foul stench exudes from that place and I would probably get myself blocked; have almost finished linking to zh wiki for the townships of Shijiazhuang (think completing this city's will be as far as I'll get, don't have your seemingly limitless patience and enthusiasm); these zh pages were created last month by User:Symplectopedia and sourced, eg for Anxiang Township, from this for the county, and this for the township; the only issue I can foresee is that of administrative reorganization - a tiny handful have seemingly added a "north" or "east" or whatever to their names or been upgraded since article creation, but I imagine these won't be the last; what's really great is I've come across links to the ca, eo, and no wikipedias in the process; also, just because not many people have (yet) added to the front of these pages doesn't mean no-one's being linking to them from the rear - many of the Japanese municipalities have hardly anything said about them, but if you look at tools - what links here, there's loads of pages; it's just a question of manpower; User:Jaguar has certainly taken a good hiding; at least the beginning of this incident was encouraging:

Tibet edit

At an ANI discussion [11], Drmies noted you may be a valuable asset in helping determine which articles are proper and which are not. It concerns a great number of additions by User:Oakley77 that are villages in Tibet. If you have the time and inclination, it would be appreciated. Dennis Brown - © 12:01, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

I answered above. I'm refraining from commenting at ANI anymore on stubs which I didn't create.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:24, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Ah, it is early and the coffee hasn't had full effect. My main concern was the potential to keep the articles rather than discussion, however. Dennis Brown - © 12:30, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Codoi, Tibet and Coka, Tibet are notable villages, I've seen them on google maps.I suspect Coka might even be a township I'll have to enquire. But I have a lot on my plate right now with salvaging Jaguar's Spain stubs. My reasons for not joining the ANI discussion is similar to your explanation on your talk page. Regards.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:32, 28 May 2012 (UTC) I'm actually spotting enough info to constitute having nav templates by county of Tibet and covering the townships and villages within them. I'm also spotting that many of my old Tibet village stubs can now be expanded a little with data and can be sorted by county. Very promising but the workload is horrendous and I won't be able to cover it all.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:30, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

If you, Vmenkov, or Visik have easy access to the Zhongguo Diminglu (National Atlas of China), that would be of immense use for upcoming work at Tibet(an areas), Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia. That I don't have such access is the reason why I started in the east when building "List of township-level divisions at Foo". GotR Talk 02:54, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Articles translated from Ukranian or Polish requiring attention edit

KotykS has recently added a number of translations which require attention. They include European_congress_in_Lutsk, Holy_Trinity_Orthodox_Cathedral,_Lutsk, Lutheran_kirche,_Lutsk, Lesya_Ukrainka_street,_Lutsk, Complex_of_Lutsk_Orthodox_Fellowship, Market_square,_Lutsk and Great_Synagogue,_Lutsk. They have all been translated from Ukranian or Polish, neither of which are among my better languages. I have already post-edited Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral, Lutsk and can also make some progress with the others but it would really be better if we could get someone more fluent in Ukranian and Polish. I have a feeling we are going to get more of these in view of the football. I've noticed some other translations from Polish, e.g. Cathedral_Hill,_Frombork and Archcathedral_Basilica_of_the_Assumption_of_the_Blessed_Virgin_Mary_and_Saint_Andrew_in_Frombork. Do you know anyoone who could do the job or will I just have to battle on? - Ipigott (talk) 14:32, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

The amount of people creating articles needing attention is getting beyond control! There's only so much we can edit ourselves. Perhaps let them know at WP:Poland and WP:Ukraine? There is a Ukrainian editor who I came into contact with who was working on the raions and towns, can't remember his name though. Still having connection problems, but hopefully will return later, sourcing all of Jaguar's Spain stubs is priority right now..♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:37, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

I've copy-edited the more important ones myself. Thought they deserved it. - Ipigott (talk) 20:56, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
