Thanks - I still have some working material that didn't go into the article that you may find useful. I also found (yesterday, while looking for traces of Archibald Campbell Douglas) what looks like it could be the grave marker of a Laird in New Kilpatrick churchyard. It was difficult to read and quite eroded, but if I can determine a year of death, that would be great. Update on the gravestones - look like there's a pair from 1783 (or possibly 1785), one of which has an additional burial from 1811 added to it. All very indistinct, definitely "Douglas of" but I can't confirm anything else. It's quite possible that the Lairds (as heritors) would have been buried in the church, but I'm not sure what would have happened to these when the new building was erected. This article shows Archibald Douglas 17th of Mains (1820–38) as the son of Colin, as does the page I have just linked to. However, historyofparliamentonline.org (http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1790-1820/member/campbell-archibald-1763-1838 ) states he was 2nd s. of Col. Andrew Campbell of Blythswood (formerly Douglas of Mains) by Henrietta, da. of James Dunlop of Glasgow. historyofparliamentonline also staes he was unmarried, yet we know he had a family, so i am not sure how accurate it is. There are three Colins in the family tree at that time, according to "A Short History of Mains" which I happen to have left in my briefcase and can refer to right now.

The first Colin was Laird of Mains and died in 1801, marked in the WP article as 15th. His brother Robert assumes the title on his death and has issue, firstly John who dies in 1803 (a year before his father but is still marked as Laird?) and secondly to the second Colin, who dies in 1820. The second Colin has issue, firstly the Archibald of the above article, and secondly to the third Colin.

Henrietta Dunlop was the sister-in-law of the first Colin, marrying his eldest brother. However, this is where the sources differ, because this source indicates that the oldest brother's name was not Andrew, but James. James is marked in the Mains article as 14th Laird. A special search on Google (books only) for "Landed Gentry Blythswood" took me to Burke's "A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain (etc), Volume 1" (1871) which confirms James as the eldest brother's name, succeeding to the old feudal title of Blysthwood on the death of his father's cousin (also James). So, in my opinion, the parliamentary source is likely to be the erroneous one.

This family's history is quite a nightmare to follow due to the changing titles and associated surnames. It wouldn't surprise me if they used to confuse themselves! Wikiwayman (talk) 17:14, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

I notice a recent revision and find that there is no discussion on the Douglas of Mains page. From your recollection, was there any? I find on other talk pages that revisions to the headers have resulted in deletion of discussion, which is concerning, do am wondering about this page. Shipsview (talk) 09:39, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

A little digging suggests that it's actually an old Victor Lewis-Smith gag (here's a source from 2000 that attributes it to him), which sounds about right.

Andrew Cunningham of Drumquhassle

Curiously there is a document listing Andrew CoD as a baillie of the earl of Lennox in 1567 on ebay this week , listed as "Superb 1562 HAND WRITTEN Vellum MANUSCRIPT With Original WAX SEAL", which shows he was still alive in 1567. The other baillies of Lennox in 1567 were Alexander Campbell of Ardoch, William Lindsay, & Umphrey Levenax of Blarstchogill (sic), see top two lines of the document.Unoquha (talk) 13:23, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Interesting document, well done for deciphering the handwriting!

I'm not sure about the date (1562/67?) as I cannot read the text; but the seal does appear to be that of the earls of Lennox from 1495 (Scottish Armorial seals, p334). If the date is correct, it certainly throws up the conundrum of Andrew CoD once again - his existence is no longer in doubt, just his identity.... Wikiwayman (talk) 13:25, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Aha! I believe the date is wrong; both Alexander Campbell of Ardoch and Umphrey Levenax of Blairinschogill appear in History of Strathendrick, p194 and footnote from 1480 and 1492 respectively, making them contemporary with the first laird, Andrew. Wikiwayman (talk) 13:39, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Alexander Campbell of Ardoch turns up again at the same period (1499), this time accused of rustling oxen with the first Laird's father (Cunningham of Polmaise), recorded in the Red Book of Menteith, p306. Google seems otherwise pretty scant on these chaps, so I'd tend towards an early 16th century date for the manuscript (first decade). Wikiwayman (talk) 13:59, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
