I edit from a location in Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5) and have an erratic schedule. I will try to never disappear in the middle of a conversation, but it might happen occasionally. If I do disappear, don't worry, I'll get back to you as soon as I'm able to. If I disappear after 05:00 UTC do not expect to hear from me for at least 10 hours.

Thanks for your understanding, Sven

I now have the email user function enabled. Emails will be sent to my alternate account, which I never check unless I am expecting a message. There is absolutely no way that I will read your email message unless you leave a note about it here, on this talk page. I will not be held accountable for not seeing your message if you do not leave me a note here. It doesn't have to be fancy, but make it obvious please. Also, please use email sparingly. If it can be discussed on the talk page, I would far prefer it there.

Thanks for your understanding, Sven

I now have a blog, Strongly Worded, and I write about Wikipedia there regularly. Feel free to leave feedback. I really loved the discussions that my Signpost opinion piece on backlogs generated, and if the situation there stabilizes, I might port one of my blog posts to the opinion section Signpost. In the mean time, happy reading.

Thanks for your understanding, Sven

Regarding your revert

Hi. Regarding your revert, might I suggest that it's brainless actions like yours that are damaging Wikipedia? I'm not sure what your revert accomplished other than re-introducing errors into Wikipedia. :-/ --MZMcBride (talk) 23:34, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) How is respecting a retired editors choice of words brainless? What is the justification for making the changes, given that its a signed message? Monty845 23:45, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
It's not your place to go around copyediting other users' personal remarks. Other than the its/it's change, there's absolutely nothing in that change that you could actually call an error. Sure, it's not how you'd write it, but you're not the user that left after suffering the brunt of a hostile community. Sven Manguard Wha? 02:24, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
Well, it wasn't as though he was going to come back and do it himself. This is a wiki. Surely there's no greater testament to the wiki spirit than copy-editing someone's final remarks. The links and expansions were minor, but incredibly useful to anyone reading the message who doesn't study Wikipedia-related initialisms and jargon. --MZMcBride (talk) 02:54, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
"... given that its a signed message"? Now you're just taunting me. :-( --MZMcBride (talk) 02:54, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
I suggest you find another bear to poke. --Guerillero | My Talk 03:05, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
I don't follow. --MZMcBride (talk) 03:59, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
He means "drop it and go away". I agree with the sentiment, now get off of my page. You're doing this just to annoy me at this point, and to be honest, it's working. If you continue to bother me, I will find an admin willing to force you to stop. Sven Manguard Wha? 16:56, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

---

By the way, you generally don't want to add a border to an image (as you did to File:In Solidarity.png). It's easy enough to add a border using [[File:Foo.jpg|border]] syntax. When you add a border to the image itself, it means the border can't be removed or customized (made thicker, dashed, red, &c.) when the image is used. --MZMcBride (talk) 03:01, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm fully aware of that. As this is a personal image that I didn't expect to catch on with other users, I made the choice to add the border, and I don't see any reason to change it. Now that I have addressed your concern, please kindly leave my page and do not come back, per above. Sven Manguard Wha? 16:56, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Liao Dynasty

Hi, Sven. This article has come up for review at the copyright problems board; it was listed automatically by the close paraphrasing tag. I see that you have been working to address copyright issues, but am unsure if they have been resolved. The article hasn't been substantially edited in three weeks, so I realize that it's possible you may have finished. If it is still a copyright problem, we should blank and remove or replace the sections in accordance with policy so that we don't continue to violate the rights of Mote after the copying issue has been discovered. Conversely, if the content has been substantially rewritten, the close paraphrasing tag should be removed. I've done a spot-check of the article throughout and have not yet found any duplicated passages in the book (which is available for preview), but that's not in itself conclusive. It's certainly not as good as having the book in front of you. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:05, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

I have the book on my desk. It's pretty damned close in the 'Foreign relations' subsection. I'd say that it's close enough that it has to be rewritten but not close enough that it has to be burned with fire. The easy way to tell where I worked and where I haven't is that the sections with in text citations were ones I did, the ones that have no citations (and are also, for the sake of discussion, written poorly) haven't been cleaned up yet. I'd appreciate it, if you decide to delete anything, a) do it on a section by section basis, and b) email me a copy of anything you delete. I write everything from scratch, but I make sure to keep the coverage at least comparable. I haven't worked on it lately because I've been hella busy. I'll be able to get it done in May though (it might be my last substantive contribution to Wikipedia, considering how I'm drifting away from it). Keep me in the loop, what ever you decide. Sven Manguard Wha? 01:50, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
Sorry to hear that you're drifting! Wikipedia's loss. :( Do you think it would make sense to blank the section with the {{copyvio}} template until you've had a chance to replace it? Stopping publication can minimize damage and hence liability, but I'd need to trust your judgment on whether the content is likely to be similar enough to constitute a liability. :) If not, we can keep the {{close paraphrasing}} tag in place a bit longer. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:12, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
Lets leave things as is for the moment. Sven Manguard Wha? 14:10, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

I still say that by criticising us equally you give too much credibility to the sad individual who made the idiotic allegations. While I agree that my posts may not have looked good to a newcomer, every single one of them was IN RESPONSE TO something inflammatory posted by 96.40.129.169. I don't appreciate such criticism from him or you, unless you can see, and clarify on the Talk page where the problem started. If 96.40.129.169 had not posted what he did at 20:35, 28 April 2012 (UTC), there would have been no problem. I rightly condemned it, because it was blatantly wrong and an attack on me (among others). You condemned me. Hmmmm. HiLo48 (talk) 04:00, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

I really don't want to hear it. Responding to a personal attack with a personal attack is still a personal attack. I'm not a perfect user when it comes to interactions myself, but you are out of line, irregardless of the circumstances. I'm going to treat you equally because I don't really care about the contents of the argument so much as I do that it's a flame war. If you want me to treat the two of you differently, I should be harsher to you, as an established user who supposedly knows better. Sven Manguard Wha? 04:04, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

I personally think that someone who has set up a recall monitor list shouldn't be retroactively removing from that list, but at this point there is very little that will convince me to wade into another massive wiki-brawl, so at the moment, this comment is all I'm willing to give. Hello Sven Manguard. I am currently working on a research about Wikipedia to know more. That's why I have created a short survey about Wikipedia and your experience editing it. I'd love to have you participate in this short survey created by me. Please click HERE to participate. Thanks for editing Wikipedia.

This is not compulsory. I will not force users for doing it. However, input will be appreciated. Thanks you. Dipankan (Have a chat?) 08:13, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

New Pages update

Hey Sven Manguard :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! Image notifications

Hey Sven. A while ago we chatted about CommonsNotificationBot & image notifications in general. I've had quite a lot of feedback about the bot, but neglected improving it for some months - this month I might have a little time/motivation to fiddle with it though. Have you had any recent thoughts about images in general - and the bot in specific? I seem to recall you mentioned the idea of having a dedicated image noticeboard for images; was there ever anything there? --Errant (chat!) 12:01, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

The Amazing Race 19

Why did you remove the promo image of Marcus in Leg 2 from the article? There's absolutely nothing that states that such images are not allowed.—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:04, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes there is. The non-free image criteria states that "Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." The image I removed does not meet that standard. Sven Manguard Wha? 19:34, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
It very clearly shows one of the contestants of the program performing one of the tasks performed within the program. Stop orphaning it. There is no reason you should have orphaned it if it is on FFD anyway. The image certainly qualifies that it "[increases the] readers' understanding of the topic".—Ryulong (竜龙) 20:44, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
I have not checked how the image is used on the page, so I do not (yet) have any opinion on whether it should be kept or not, but if you propose a file for deletion because of WP:NFCC, could you please either leave it in the article during the discussion or provide a link to a revision in which the file is used? It makes it easier to determine if the file passes WP:NFCC or not if you can see it in use. --Stefan2 (talk) 22:32, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

This is getting disruptive. You have sent every non-free image to FFD and removed two relevant non-free images from the main article that show contestants doing things claiming free images can be used to depict those items when events that happened in the show are completely irreplaceable. I have half a mind to bring this up to a larger audience if this bullshit continues.—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:34, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

I have done just that.—Ryulong (竜龙) 20:04, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Re: the Commons, the FFU requester was simply mistaken. It's nothing against you. Those photos just have nothing to do with the show other than being where they had their after party and that really has no educational value as far as I am aware.—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:17, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Wondering about an image change

Hello there, I uploaded http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:4PPTunesNEW-300x300.jpg and I was wondering why you reverted the image to it's higher quality version. I'm somewhat new to image policies on Wikipedia, so forgive me if it's obvious. It says something about an OTRS comment? Just curious. Atomic Religione (talk) 05:02, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

There is no reason to upload a smaller version of an image when a larger one is available, so long as the image is released under a free license. The software allows for us to control how large an image is displayed in articles, so most of the images Wikipedia stores are much larger than they appear in articles.
The only time that we do shrink images outside of articles is when the images are not under free licenses. This is because Wikipedia imposes strong limitations on "fair use" images.
OTRS is the volunteer worked email system for Wikipedia. If an image has an OTRS ticket, that means that the copyright holder for the image sent us an email releasing the image in question under a free license (meaning that the image would be free to use, instead of "fair use"). The template is on the page because it allows for people with access to the email system to double check and confirm the permission in case suspicions ever come up.
I hope this helps. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:51, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Sven, tonight's meetup is at 33 Harrison Avenue, not 33 Harrison Street as was listed on the event page and meetup.com. nascent Juanqinzhai article

Good sir, we meet again (thanks for the kind words about our Song architecture collaboration with wctaiwan in your blog). Finally the Palace of Tranquil Longevity article is up, improved and passed DYK successfully. The article will only grow going forward, as another 26 of the Palace's structures are awaiting restoration (only one of the Palace's total 27 structures have been restored and opened to public study and tours so far—the Juanqinzhai).

Since the Juanqinzhai gained so much media attention with its tour of the United States and generated so much academic interest, I thought it merits its own article; so, Monday before last I began drafting a Juanqinzhai article in my sandbox. I was wondering if you can't help me write the article, could you help me post original images I took of the Juanqinzhai exhibition at the Met? (they allowed non-flash photography in parts of the exhibition and barred it in others). I'm clueless when it comes to putting images in articles.

All the best,

Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship

Please do not edit the comments of others, as you did here. The image is part and parcel of what I am describing and is necessary to convey the point. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 20:09, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

No, it's not. It's extraneous and serves only to draw attention to your comment. A number of people find animated gifs very distracting, using them when there is no need to do so is in poor taste. Sven Manguard Wha? 20:16, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
  • I understand you dislike it. That is not a reason to remove it. It is not there for decorative purposes, nor to bring attention to my comment. It is there to point out the presence of this animated gif, that it is as obvious as it is, and that despite its presence it has not eliminated snow/notnow closures. Per WP:TALK, "Editing—or even removing—others' comments is sometimes allowed. But you should exercise caution in doing so, and normally stop if there is any objection. " I hereby object. Please stop. Help with editor

Hi. An editor you recently talked to, User:Arcandam, has been undermining my efforts at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hip pop. After requesting and getting a comment from another editor, he accused me of canvassing and him of being a "friend of mine". He's steered the discussion, and myself, off its intended course. Can you please help? Dan56 (talk) 05:39, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

@Dan56: Congratulations, you picked the worst possible admin to ask this question. I'm pretty sure Sven is sick and tired of this kind of nonsensical disputes and childish catfights (but please correct me if I am wrong). @Sven: The above is not a good summary of what happened. I've discovered that Dan56 has canvassed a couple of people (not just 1) in at least 2 AfD's. I am going to check his contribs to see if those were the only two AfD's where this happened. If he did nothing wrong I will discover that soon enough, but judging by the way he tries to prevent me from investigating that seems unlikely. He has been trolling, calling me 'bro' after I repeatedly asked him not to, but that backfired incredibly: he basically gave me the right to call him 'sis'. Arcandam (talk) 05:52, 20 May 2012 (UTC) p.s. On your blog you wrote: "Yes, I’d love normal bullet points, but I can’t afford to pay to enable custom CSS." Do you need hosting space? I can give you 100mb, that should be enough for a simple WP installation. You can keep using the wordpress.com subdomain for hosting images/downloads etc., they give 3 gigs of file storage space.
I am not an admin actually. I recommend that the two of you both leave the area of rap for a few days. Go edit bunnies or kittens or something. Sven Manguard Wha? 15:55, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

New Page Triage/New Pages Feed

Hey all :). A notification that the prototype for the New Pages Feed is now live on enwiki! We had to briefly take it down after an unfortunate bug started showing up, but it's now live and we will continue developing it on-site.

The page can be found at Special:NewPagesFeed. Please, please, please test it and tell us what you think! Note that as a prototype it will inevitably have bugs - if you find one not already mentioned at the talkpage, bring it up and I'm happy to carry it through to the devs. The same is true of any additions you can think of to the software, or any questions you might have - let me know and I'll respond.

Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 13:12, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
