July is National Picnic Month in the United States

In past years the end of June has been picnic time. I just moved it to the beginning of July. I did this because of a conflict with LGBT Pride Month in June, for which activities are planned this year and may be planned in subsequent years, and because according to the picnic industry July is National Picnic Month in the United States. Also in the United States the July 4 holiday is traditionally a time for picnics. Currently there was one Wiknic scheduled in March to happen in June. I wrote to the organizers to inform them of this proposed change.

I am biased, as I am currently working on the Wiki Loves Pride campaign for June, but my personal preference would be to have the Wiknic campaign in July. --Another Believer _(Talk) 15:27, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

I do not mean to word this out rudely:

In my humble Opinion, I find that July is a much warmer month for a wiknic than June or August.

@Bluerasberry: I didn't notice this conversation earlier. Yes, I strongly disagree with this change. I can't express how miffed I am you think you have any business making that change unilaterally. Chris troutman Could you please propose a better time for next year? If it is any consolation , Wikipedia:Wiki Loves Pride 2014/Results produced a lot of content which would not otherwise have been made. I would still propose June for that event and move the Wiknic to another time. I would help you begin any discussion which you would have liked to have had. My move was not unilateral about the demand for the time slot, but I admit that I did not do enough to solicit consensus for moving the Wiknic to July and I want to make amends somehow by reaching a consensus time. @Bluerasberry: I'll wait to see how this event turns out and poll the participants. I was happy with the event occurring at the end of June but I'll ask around about a potential August date next year before replying. At that point we can begin a formal discussion. As for the claim that you didn't unilaterally make the change, the sentence "I just moved it to the beginning of July" sounds unilateral to me. Where else was the matter discussed and with whom? Chris troutman I talked with people organizing Wiki Loves Pride events. Gay Pride Day / Christopher Street Day has a history going back years or decades of being at the end of June, which is when the Wiknic has been. The rationale for moving was building off international gay pride events, and nothing to do with the needs of Wiknic organizers. The desire for Wiki-attention for the end of June by Wiki Loves Pride organizers was not unilateral; the decision to move the Wiknic to a non-competing timeslot and deciding that it was less flexible than the pride event was, and along with the actual execution of the change was unilateral to me. The only support I had was off-wiki as already stated; some people or marketers in the United States call July "National Picnic Month" and I imagined that people picnic during 4th of July barbecue celebrations in the United States. Yes, this was not a unilateral decision on User:Bluerasberry's part. I certainly expressed my preference that the Wiknic campaign be held in July. No one raised any concerns above when the conversation first took place. Speaking selfishly here, a picnic is also much more appropriate in the Pacific Northwest in July, as June weather is still pretty spotty at best. We will see if the Wiknic campaign is successful in July, otherwise I am not against returning to June next year. That being said, the campaign will likely "compete" against Pride wiki events also held in June in the future. --Another Believer _(Talk) 00:43, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Planning a Wiknic.

Excuse me for asking, If I were to plan a Wiknic that would take place later this Summer, what would I do more than to create a Meetup page for the Wiknic with a set date, time, agenda and location?--CrossroadsCityBoy1 (talk) 19:05, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

You may wish to post a notice to WP:GEONOTICE or post messages on the talk pages of active Wikipedians in your geographic location, perhaps by making a list of these people's usernames, making a message, then asking Wikipedia:Mass message senders to deliver your message. Updates

It seems that the page hasn't been updated since 2014. If there are no objections, I had in mind to begin revising the project page. Primarily, to organise the information already present, and make it easier for people to add content in the future. Distinguishing between annual and regional Wiknics is first and foremost on my "to-do list", along with setting up the page for the current year. To that end, I'd like to know if anyone is planning anything for 2015. If you are, that's wonderful! As this "reboot" is a work in progress!

I'd also like, as a I said, to start organising relevant data from previous Wiknics. That includes event information, photos (group pictures only, as it constitutes implied likeness consent), as well as suggestions from the experiences of previous Wiknics. I might also add some templates to spruce things up.

As part of this effort, with the help of User:L250, an IRC channel has been set up to help with coordination and promote discussion, both on-wiki and off-wiki. The channel is located at #wikipedia-en-irc. The channel should start receiving on-wiki advertising before long. I'd also like to work with any interested admins in promoting Wiknik(s) on-wiki as well.

If you're watching this page (or just happen upon it) and have some ideas, suggestions, or future events planned, please let me know! I'll be watching this talk page pretty religiously, especially as I revise the project page for futher expansion. Any help and collaboration is appreciated! Aug 16 Regional usergroup breakout rooms

We would like to invite m:WALRUS regional usergroups and cooperatives host their own virtual breakout rooms on Sunday August 16 at 4pm Eastern / 1pm Pacific during the second hour of Wikipedia:Wiknic#Great American Wiknic virtual edition 2020. These can be on Zoom, Google Meet, m:Wikimedia Meet or whatever other platform, and each regional group that participates will be responsible for running its own meeting. It is quite likely that some regional groups will want to team up to cover a broader area. Back in-person in Summer 2023!

I was thinking we should align Wiknic events on Aug 12-13, the weekend before Wikimania. The NYC chapter can give out micro-grants of up to $200 for picnicking expenses, for those locations that might benefit from it. @Pharos: A Wiknic has been planned for Sunday August 6th, in Mission Bay, San Diego. We've done our best to keep the Wiknic tradition going here in Southern California, and this year is no exception. An interesting idea, and as one of the oldest members of the Wikimedia New York City chapter, I probably qualify. At first I thought, a picnic is a pleasant activity but December is a poor month for it. Oh, Nigeria! Maybe we in North America could have such a thing at a time more suitable for our climactic zone.
