Magazine Project (copied from CVG Project page)

Reviving the discussion (sorry if this is a faux-pas). I guess the logical thing to do would be to create a sub-page on WP:CVG listing users and issues of certain magazines they have. Separate lists of content in those magazines can be supported elsewhere on the page (most magazines list content in backissue listings, but we will have to make a point to document every game reviewed). Then, as editors write, they can stop in to check if the topic in question is covered in a magazine and move from there by asking an editor for information.     • Well, the CVG project page has a guidelines section for CVG articles. Under, the Organization subsection there's a mention about citing sources. Here it is. The next step for me is to go through all my issues and check out the back issue listings to document what info's covered in certain volumes at /Magazine. If anyone jumps on board, be sure to list every game recovered under a volume. Right now, I'm planning on follow a simple format like this example:

My only question is, should we wikify the game titles? At first I thought it might make the page look uglyish, but I realized it might be convenient for certain editors who can use "What links here" to see if something from /Magazine pops up. Layout

I'm a bit confused by the general layout of this, I would have instead arranged the entire page purely by user instead of trying to arrange by user and by magazine. You will get some redundancy if 2 people have the same magazines, but it means it'll be easier to find out who to contact for a specific magazine. Here's an Example:

I went ahead and placed all info(features,interviews, news, reviews, and previews) from the 1st magazine I have as an example. It might be overkill though. As I was going through the mag, I realized Next-Gen covered more than just reviews/previews. There were a lot news items, interviews, and features that could really be useful. So I listed pratically everything some could use as a reference if need be.

Also, I wiki linked to any topic or game that was covered. There were a lot of previews of games that were never released, in those cases I linked to the development studio. For the reviews, I just linked to the game(whether it exists or not). --Mitaphane _talk 02:06, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Are we going to keep the layout as it is? Or switch to a user centred one as I suggested? There could be an overlap/redundancy if there are people listing the same magazine, but I think it would save the double checking to see which user has which edition of the magazine. I also think it would be useful to inform others whether you are able to produce magazine scans or just transcribe appropriate sections and synopses. - Hahnchen 02:12, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I think this info needs to be in a table to avoid spawl. Yes, it would lead to some large boxes, but it would keep infomation ring-fenced by magazine and issue. - X201 09:02, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm thinking this might be the format to go with. It would keep the info independant of each magazine's layout. Though I think a news column would be helpful addition to table for those people wanting to document game history. For example, in Next-Gen 14 there was a news piece about the delay of the N64's release. Just as a note, we should vary the headers for the table based on magazine / magazine's life cycle / convenience of years. Nintendo Power really didn't have a "news" section aside from special, special previews, and most news was contained within features. Myself I think plain text without the links & italics would suffice (they were only there because I copied and pasted), each table altered to suit the magazine and the features info trimmed down to the bare essentials eg "Ultra64-Silicon graphics interview". But as you say, this page is for researchers and not the general public so the need to stick to specific formats and styles dosen't need to be as harsh. We don't need them. The link should suffice. I guess I put everything in italics since I started with article names and didn't even think about by the time I got to the games. Don't bother trying to index it all at once, I'm just listing a few magazines every day. Also, with Edge, indexing the reviews is not that important as the game, score and issue are listed on the Edge review database. We should have a special instruction telling users who want Edge sources to find out which issue it is in using the DB then to consult the relevent user. - Hahnchen 23:47, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Other languages

How about magazines in other languages? I have a lot of old german magazines (ASM, PowerPlay, PlayTime), would those be relevant for the english Wikipedia too? I'm not aware of a german version of this WP, but even if there is one, it might be preferable to have a list of available magazines/articles in a central location. I think it would be a good idea(especially for games that are developed by German teams). We would just have to make sure the magazine listing says it's in a non english language (thus, subject to different translations). --Mitaphane _talk 22:09, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Online magazines

Would it be worthwhile to have a section with links to sites that actually contain reviews from or even scans of magazine pages? For example, amigapower.com has nine full issues already scanned in for anyone to look at, so there would be no need to ask anyone for information in them. I'll see if I can find more sites like that and create this section, if nobody objects. --ADeveria 12:47, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I was going to put something like that right at the top, ie special cases. For example, instead of searching for reviews in Edge on the main page, you would instead search the Edge reviews database then see if anyone has the appropriate copy. I have a reasonable archive of PC Zone magazines, but most reviews of those are archived at http://www.pczone.co.uk - Hahnchen 13:37, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Advertising

I had my first "customer" yesterday. It was our very own Thunderbrand making use of the system, but it set me thinking. To publicise the project, what if our "fee" was a banner to be placed on the discussion page of any article we've helped? No, let's not do that, talk pages are full of too many banners at the top already. But that's just my assessment. This may be futile, but if anyone knows off the bat that he or she has an issue of a 1991 magazine covering Final Fantasy 4, we need it at the FAC. The nomination is under fire for not having enough print sources. --Zeality 12:59, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

It's probably going to pass. I'm pretty much the only one there who is holding out for more sources. I think it's a shame that a game so ingrained in Japanese culture fails to have a review from the Japanese gaming magazine. I mean, there are no reviews at all in reference to its original Japanese release. I just don't think Nintendo Power and the Gamepro score from gamerankings is good enough. I really don't think anyone here has those kind of resources to get you a review, you either need to get your hands on a Western magazine collector, or poke the otaku-freaks at 2chan, but that requires Japanese. - Hahnchen 01:06, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't know how helpful this lead will be, but there's this page(http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Chatsubo_for_Non-Japanese_Speakers) on Wikipedia Japan for asking questions in other languages. Nintendo Power

I have a smattering of earlier issues of Nintendo Power and then all of them from around 1994 onward. I also have a Nintendo Power index which came with one issue and it has a bunch of information for ones that I don't own physically. Glancing over my entries, I've realized that listing items for Classified Information and Counselor's Corner is basically useless. The only citable information would be secret codes or help in defeating certain areas. At the most, the counselor's corne could be used to justify that a particular part of the game was hard. Computer Gaming World archives available for download

I'm cross-posting this at the main CVG talk page, but thought the wider WPCVG community might benefit from it.

Now that Computer Gaming World is changing their name, the entire back catalogue of first 100 issues' worth of CGW articles has been posted for free download at FileFront, here. It's a pretty huge collection of free content, and provides both interesting historical information and an accessible source of facts for articles that touch on its subject matter. Personal computer game will be received some new citations from this source, and I hope it helps improve some other articles as well.

Unfortunately, these are extremely large PDF files - Issue 1 alone is fourteen megabytes. I'm downloading them all now, though, and would be happy to start a torrent if necessary. Daveydweeb (^chat/_patch) 06:26, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm volunteering to archive them all, but it's going to be a large project. The first fifty issues alone weigh in at more than a gigabyte - not only will they take a day or two to download, but a torrent would probably be unfeasibly large. We'll see, no? It's really not that large, everything clocks in at at about 2.86 gigs, which is slightly more than half a DVD. Plus you can always re-compress within Acrobat as desired - personally I prefer having the higher quality files available. The archive is also available at cgw.vintagegaming.org which I think is the site of the person who scanned all this. - e 17:16, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Hardcore Gamer Magazine

I'm not too familiar with the American game magazine market and recently came across a print mag called Hardcore Gamer Magazine. They have all their content online as well in pdf format at http://www.hardcoregamer.com/ . I've just downloaded a few issues, sizes range from around 25Mb up to 50Mb. Personally, I think the magazine's a bit shit, without any editorial control over the layout and art compared to say Games TM and Edge which makes for a cluttered look and messy read. Game title order

Spamming talk pages

Perhaps it is a good idea to add something to the cvgproj template to indicate that a game is listed on this page. Something like "A magazine source that can be used to improve the verifiability for this article has been listed on the CVG magazines page". Also, this page is becoming extremely long, perhaps it would be a good idea to split the page into subpages per magazine. Although it would then no longer be possible to search for games on this page since they would be split, a google search limited to this page could still be used to search this page and any subpages. For example, a search for "Knights of Carnage". It would be easy to create a search bar plugin for firefox (qnd ie7)to handle this.. JACOPLANE • 2007-01-14 17:41

I think the splitting of pages per magazine is inevitable. At some point it's going to have to happen. Last month the page was 200KB in size, it's 275KB now. After I finish indexing my magazines, it probably be up to 320KB. The only question is when someone is going to step up to do it.

I agree with the idea of promoting the project on the cvg tag. I don't know much about bots (though I would like to learn), but wouldn't it be possible to create a bot that could do this work? It could go through each article in the cvgproj scope and scan through the "What links here" links. If it found a "Wikipedia:WikiProject Computer and video games/Magazines" (or any subarticle) link it could automatically flag the cvgproj template on the talk page to display the message (and links to the appropriate reference page). —Mitaphane _talk 03:59, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Game Informer back issues

I need a bit of a favor. Does anyone have access to back issues of Game Informer? Specifically, the January 2006 issue? I'm trying to whip Radiata Stories into shape (I know, a long way to go yet) but I threw away my old issues and want a proper citation in the Reception/Criticism section. Computer Gaming World issue 125

Since the project page does not list it, and I have exhausted all other means of finding it, I thought I would ask here. I am looking for this issue of Computer Gaming World. Particularly, I need excerpts of any and all negative comments made in their System Shock review. I'm fine-tuning the article before FAC, and a little negative criticism of the game is the only thing left to add. If anyone has access to this issue, I would greatly appreciate it. Spreading the Word About This

I reckon this is a great idea, but it would be better if more people knew of it. How's about putting links to this project page on the wikipedia pages for all the different gaming magazines? That way if someone goes to look at them it could say something like "Do you have a copy of any issues of this magazine? old german game wanted

Hi. I`m searching couple of days for one particular game. I bought it couple of years ago, so it`s not easy to get it. It was on a german game pack called "PC games".Main....demo(I think) on this cd was warcracft 2.But I can find it now. and about this game.I don`t remember it`s name and that`s the main problem. All I know that it is something like buddies, buddle, bondes, etc. I think it starts with "B" It`s a simulation game.I don`t know what it is about.You start on a green land, with couple of "people" and a house.On the other land there are your enemys.I thinkthe point is to increasy you population and technology to kill enemy. Later in the game you can build bridges, set traps, even invent guns and wings to fly. It`s quiet lively.You can build new houses, set traps, etc. And you are a god-like hand, so you use a pick and drop method to do things. any idea, tips, help, and anything that will help me get this game, please post on my talk page or here(cause I`m new here and don`t know how all od this works), thanks Dilando 10:00 9.July.2007

Warcraft 2 came out in 1995 so assuming this other game is contemporary to it you could try looking in Category:1995_video_games to see if anything rings a bell. - X201 09:04, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, but none of above. I`m looking for simulation and all three of them are strategy types. It`s closer to settlers, but there is no menu in it.Also it`s god like, past paced game. People there a similar to those in settlers.Round, little puffy, cute.When they die, the fly to heaven.At beginning there is not much to do, but later, when both island are connected, it`s hard to control everything.Oh, there are also rabbits, wolf, snake, birds, fishes....I remember that I can grab a rabbit with my hand, and lay it near a wolf, and it is eaten.Little sadistic, but that was only thing I understood :D beside, are Populus, settlers and Mega lo mania a german games?Dilando 16:18, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

hmm....not really, cause I don`t know german myself, but i checked that link above, about games from 1995 in english and german, and also I checked years from 1991 to 1998 in both languages and still nothing.Dilando 09:35, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
