Shadows of Night

OK, I'll get this ball rolling a bit. I found time this morning to make some improvements to the Shadows of Night album Gloria page. Re-worked the fourth Shadows of Night album, Raw 'n' Alive at the Cellar, Chicago 1966! this morning. Did some minor format fixes, added composers, personnel and re-formatted the article to conform to the guidelines. I'll work on a discography when I get into the mood. LOL Comments?? My only recommendation is to examine similar discography pages to get used to the new format. You will need references for charting singles and albums. Remember Discogs can be used as an external link, but alone it is not a reliable source.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 17:36, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

The Chocolate Watchband

OK, shifted gears and did some work on the first album by The Chocolate Watchband, No Way Out. Added technical staff, more run times and composers and improved overall formatting. 13th Floor Elevators

I know that it isn't listed on the project page, but in the course of doing other things, I looked at the 13th Floor Elevators album Bull of the Woods. It had some templates at the top indicating it needed some work done. I agree, it seemed to be a less than well thought out article. I fixed a bunch of stuff, separated the background out, fixed a bunch of formatting and generally improved (in my view) the article. I also added the reference section as well as an additional reference. GracefulSlick, I noted that you did some editing about a year ago, nothing that I had to fix by the way, so take a look. I propose to remove the templates, at least one of them, but I will wait for comments from others. Frankzappatwin (talk) 22:06, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

I see that you added the record image. Thanks, I had not gotten to that yet. I have seen and used that source before, but not with this article...temporarily forgetting about it. Is it considered a credible reference or is it just considered an external link if I use it? Another thing. I'm not sure if it is within the scope of this project and worth summarizing on this talk page, but yesterday I also did some minor editing on a Cramps album Rockin n Reelin in Auckland New Zealand. Frankzappatwin I used waybackattack on articles like the Music Machine and Every Mother's Son and it was considered reliable during GA and DYK reviews so I think it is safe to use here. The Cramps album is very much within the scope of this project since it is garage punk. You can add it to the to-do list if you feel there is need for a follow-up. Thanks for the info regarding waybackattack. It usually has some unknown snippets that are useful. Great on the Cramps. I wasn't too sure about being within the scope of this project because they are a lot more recent than what was mentioned in the project page. I always liked them and Poison Ivy was a great guitarist and looked pretty hot even though she is only a year (63) younger than me. Side trip

Not necessarily Garage Rock, but I took a little side trip and did some editing on Kaleidoscope albums today. Listened to them a lot in the 60's. Oooops! Showing my age again!

Frankzappatwin I have a reissue of Side Trip, and it is one of my favorite psychedelic albums. The Arabic influences, especially on "Egyptian Garden", is so far out from what most bands were doing. They were supposed to play at the Monterey Pop Festival but they were replaced at the last minute - so unfortunate!TheGracefulSlick (talk) 19:24, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

Got back into the garage rock groove today and worked on The Squires page. Added a band infobox and a short paragraph on the only cover that I know of. Music Explosion

Back to it today, I re-did some of the information in the Music Explosion article and added a band infobox. It's not really a good article and needs re-work which I will attempt soon. While I have found a couple of pictures of the band on Discogs, I'm not too sure if I can use them. Is it considered "fair use"? Frankzappatwin (talk) 11:56, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

Green Fuz

OK, I'm on a roll today. I used to see The Green Fuz all of the time while I was in high school. They impressed me because they were younger than I was. They came from Bridgeport TX, which was close to the Dallas/Ft Worth area. I used to see them at LouAnn's and The Studio Club in Dallas. I may have even seen them at The Cellar in Ft Worth a few times along with groups like American Blues. So much for me. They were actually much better live than on record. Unfortunately the record was recorded in less than ideal conditions. The restaurant where they recorded no longer exists; it has been replaced by a Shell gas station. We actually had a pretty thriving music scene in the DFW area back in the 60's, considering how conservative Texas was back then. Locally, we had Steve Miller who played at Lee Park at "anti-war" gatherings, before he became too big; clubs like LouAnn's and Studio Club in Dallas, Panther Hall in Ft Worth and both cities had a "Cellar". Got to see bands like Mouse and the Traps, 13th Floor Elevators, Moving Sidewalks, The Chessmen, Bugs Henderson, John Nitzinger, Fever Tree, Kenny & the Kasuals, and Bloodrock, to name just a few. Frankzappatwin, I'm getting jealous--how I wish I could have been there! You got to be part of the legendary Dallas and Fort Worth scene! I read somewhere that Kennedy's Secret Service detail got drunk at the Cellar the night before the assassination. I think that the band playing that night later became the Neurotic Sheep. The owner of the club supposedly had ties with mob kingpin Carlos Marcello and Jack Ruby. I hear that it was a wild place. I made sure to mention the Cellar in the part about Texas in the Garage rock article. I wish I could have been able to be part of that scene, but I was only born in late '65 (which makes me a '66 model, technically speaking). Garagepunk66 (talk) 23:43, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Frankzappatwin, I thought I'd ask another question. From what I've read, garage rock did not come to be thought of as a genre until the early '70s, and that some of the writers of that time used the term "punk rock" to describe 60s garage (before the term came to be associated with the late 70s movement). But, I was just wondering, if you ever heard terms used in the 60s like "garage" or "punk" to describe that kind of music, or were there other adjectives then? I have a theory that the term "punk rock" may pre-date the early 70s critics. I could be wrong, but I read somewhere that Zappa used the term "punk" to describe amateur music in his 1968 movie "You are What You Eat" (and he did have a song called "Flower Punks", which was a parody of "Hey Joe"). While the Cellar certainly existed in '63, they didn't serve alcohol. It is rumored that it could be gotten "under the table", but I never witnessed that. Cellar was a name only, other than the one in Houston, they were walk-ups in Dallas and Ft Worth. I never saw the one in San Antonio. In Dallas, you had to walk up to the third floor...interesting place where the waitresses wore only their underwear...I was only 15 years old when I first went in 1967, so it was very eye-opening. It was across the street from the Gordon McLendon owned radio station KLIF and local "underground" station KNUS. From the point of view of being in Texas, I didn't hear "punk" until at least the mid-70's. We knew many of these bands as "garage bands"; I didn't hear "garage rock" until many years later. The only band that I actually saw play in a garage was The Five Americans around 1968. A friend won a contest sponsored by local TV show "Sump'n Else", and the Five Americans came to her house and performed from the garage to about 65 people in the backyard. I'm excited that you got to be a part of all that. Gosh, to see the Five Americans playing in a garage! I wish I had been old enough to swing with the scene--I was just a little tot then, poor me. But, luckily I have really early memories that go back to as early as late '67, right around when I turned two. I remember when my dad drove up in the brand new '67 Chrysler station wagon. I remember listening to the AM radio and loving every tune that came on. My brother and I had a radio on the table in our bedroom and would listen to the tunes coming through on the Mighty 870, WTIX--once you turned it on, you couldn't turn it off--all of the music was so great--we'd stay up listening to the radio all night. By the way, I'll read the article you showed me. You probably already know that there's a great documentary on DVD about the Fort Worth scene, Teen a Go-Go.[2] I have a copy--it's fantastic. And, of course I also have some of the Fort Worth Teen Scene series CD's. What you were part of was something really special--I do not think anything like it could ever happen again. I have a feeling that the 60s garage scene (like all mf the musical movements from that period) is going to go down in history as a kind of golden age. Blues Magoos

Well I've been editing lots of other articles and just got back into the garage rock mode this past week. Went through and cleaned up two of the three Blues Magoos albums that needed some work. Activity update

Over the last couple of days, I cleaned up several "garage rock" album articles to bring them in line with Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums/Album article style guide. Among them were at least four Electric Prunes albums and Psychotic Reaction by Count Five. Frankzappatwin, yes, I appreciate the Electric Prunes edits especially. I think it would be good for you to try to improve an article, something you really enjoy writing about, to GA status. At this point, I believe you have a good understanding about the "dos" and "don'ts" of editing. If anyone has access to the Electric Prunes album Artifact, I need assistance. Whoever wrote the original article in 2011 listed Billy Corgan in the infobox as the producer. I left a message on the talk page with no response, and that editor hasn't contributed since writing the original article. I know that Mark Tulin (bass player for EP's) toured with Billy eight years later, but I read somewhere that they didn't actually meet until 2008. All of my research indicates that Tulin and James Lowe produced this album. Anyone on the team know any different?Frankzappatwin (talk) 14:19, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Bobby Fuller Four

Didn't do anything to the request for citations on the Bobby Fuller Four page, but I did clean up, expand, add references and added a ratings infobox to each of their two studio album articles. Other than firsthand information, I cannot help on the artist article. OK now, a question regarding protocol. Their three most successful songs are linked in the article lead. Was in the garage rock mode lately and upgraded or otherwise enhanced many of the articles that I edited earlier this year, plus a few others. I added singles infoboxes to a few, references to others, technical personnel to yet others, added information to articles, etc. This includes most Shadows of Knight albums, Bobby Fuller Four, Electric Prunes, HP Lovecraft, Green Fuz, Chocolate Watchband and added a band infobox to Zakary Thaks. Others that I don't remember as well.

I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with the Dallas Garage rock band, Kenny and the Kasuals. They were all from my neighborhood in Dallas and went to what would have been my high school had I not gone to the local Catholic school instead. They were all 3-4 years older though. Two things were necessary, you had to live in Texas at the time and you have to be an "old fogey" like me! LOL It is interesting now, that a lot of bands that I saw live in the 60's were just considered "local high school bands" back then, but their status has certainly changed over the years. Kenny & the Kasuals (yes "K"), Green Fuz, Five Americans, Mouse & the Traps and a few others that I cannot remember right now are just a few examples. ? and the Mysterians

A bit of an update from the garage rock perspective. While I have been editing lots of other articles, I got away from garage rock for a while. I returned and did some extensive work on two ? and the Mysterians albums, 96 Tears and More Action. I am unable to do much more on their other two studio albums; Action needed a lot of work (and still does) and also seems to contain an unsubstantiated claim. I haven't got or found much material that can improve it yet. Their other album from the 90's Question Mark & the Mysterians seems to be OK although I did add instrumentation and one other minor change to it. Michigan garage rock in the 60's is the second most important area after Texas, in my opinion. Frankzappatwin (talk) 10:12, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
