Season-by-season records

Proposal: I would like to see the Season-by-season records sections in the NBA team articles (e.g., [1]) spun off into their own articles, as is done in the NFL season articles (e.g., [2], which is accessible from the team article [3]).

Rationale: During the NBA regular season, the Season-by-season records section of each team article is being updated several times per week to keep the won-loss record for the current season up-to-date. This has the downside of polluting the team article edit history, so that persons monitoring these articles on their watchlist may miss consequential edits (including vandalism). If the Season-by-season records sections are isolated into their own articles, then it will be easier to track changes in content in the main body of the team articles.

I think in the long run, the season-by-season records would turn into a very long list so that is one consideration. On the other hand, one can always employ a "hide" function to overcome that problem, although not everyone agrees with the aesthetics of hiding content...

But turning to the specific rationale posited at hand -- personally the team pages I monitor don't encounter a whole lot of vandalism (i.e. Raptors, Spurs, Suns). I have no objection to the implementation of this proposal however, save that, ideally, all the team articles have to adopt the same format. Chensiyuan (talk) 03:11, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Wilt Chamberlain

An anon IP (this guy here User_talk:75.34.6.51), a self-confessed Wilt critic, is currently editing the page. Up to now, he is doing an OK job, but just Take that back, he deleted all the positive parts Cherry wrote about Wilt and kept the negatives. NBA all-time rosters

Hello, I am currently working on the {{NBA All-Time rosters}}, just trying to create all 30 lists now. I'd like to hear some suggestions on what information the lists should contain. There are some examples that you could see: Golden State list, Charlotte list, Toronto list, and Houston list. I really want to see the individuals stats, but am not sure which ones. Roster templates

Scouting Report

A user recently added a "Scouting Report" section to Monta Ellis. Does anyone think this is appropriate for an encyclopedia article? I don’t know if other articles have a “scouting report” but I can see that Ellis's needs sources that are reliable. It also appears to violate WP:NPOV. I think it needs to be at least tagged. —LOL (talk) 22:32, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

TyrusThomas4lyf sock-puppet activity

This anon has flagged Wilt Chamberlain with a POV flag, pimped the page List_of_career_achievements_by_Michael_Jordan, has deleted Wilt Chamberlain's inofficial Quadruple-double and is trying to assert that not Wilt, but Dwight Howard holds the all-time accuracy record on NBA records, for what reason whatsoever. Move roster templates

I strongly recommend moving all NBA roster templates located at Category:NBA roster templates to the more convenient title. For example, move {{Atlanta Hawks}} to the {{Atlanta Hawks roster}}. The main reason for this recommendation is to free up such templates as {{Atlanta Hawks}} to create a template similar to {{Los Angeles Dodgers}} (MLB), {{New Jersey Devils}} (NHL), {{Chicago Bears}} (NFL), or {{Houston Dynamo}} offering different links related to a particular franchise. I think you got my point. I am willing to move all templates as soon as I receive a consensus here.--Crzycheetah 23:08, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Done. Took the logo off. Added parser functions so if you type in "NBA Project|class=A|importance=High" it would produce: {{NBA Project|class=A|importance=High}}

I have looked all over the internet and can't find what day the 1985 NBA All Star game was played in Indianapolis. It has totally confused me, you would think it would be on the internet somewhere. Team name in infobox

Wouldn't it be better to have the team's logo instead of the team name with link in a player's infobox, for the sake of better recognition? It would even be better to have both, the name and the team's logo. ● 8~Hype ^@ 13:19, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

I tried to use team logos on those all-time rosters, but some other wikipedian removed them stating that it violates a fair-use policy. In your case, the same problem is going to arise.--Crzycheetah 20:18, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

I'll concur with everyone here. I hate to say it, but most of Wikipedia's admins are way too uptight with the rules and regulations, especially on images and logos, to even entertain that thought 8-hype. I have had some pretty bad experiences with this issue. A few years ago, I tried to use historical logos in the standings section of the NBA seasons article, and it was taking down because of fair-use regulations, and for the arguement that it is just "meerly decoration". IMHO, that was just pure BS. I tried to argue my point to some of the admins, but no one would take me seriously (maybe because I was just a silly sports editor. Ugh...). From my experiences, there really is no reasoning with some admins, so it's just better to leave it alone and avoid the frustration. I would love to have expanded, but reasonable, use of logos for our article, but with wikipedia's current admins acting like jerks sometimes, that will never happen. Help request: GA backlog

Hello. There has been a large backlog at the Good Article Nominations page for a while. Since most of my editing is in the Sports and Recreation category, that is the area that I am currently focusing on. To try to cut down on the backlog, I'm approaching projects with the request that members from that project review two specific articles over the next week. My request to WikiProject National Basketball Association is to try to find time to review Vengeance (2005) and Joe Delaney. If these are already reviewed by someone else or you have time for another review (or you'd rather review something else altogether), it would be great if you could help out with another article. Of course, this is purely voluntary. If you could help, though, it would help out a lot and be greatly appreciated. The basic instructions for reviewing articles is found at WP:GAN and the criteria is found at WP:WIAGA. Jersey numbers

The jersey numbers have to be added to every player who is signed to a team, by adding "| number = (respective jersey number)" to a player's infobox. ● 8~Hype ^@ 11:28, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Championship templates

Curiously, even though Palazzi was sold during the season, he is listed as part of the 1956-57 Championship team. Here's the proof. So what should I do? I think every player who appears on the Championship team rosters on the Celtics website should be added to the template (including Palazzi, even though he was sold). If this was the case, following players would have to be added:

Template:Boston Celtics 1956-57 NBA champions - Palazzi
Template:Boston Celtics 1961-62 NBA champions - Butler
Template:Boston Celtics 1962-63 NBA champions - Foley
Template:Boston Celtics 1968-69 NBA champions - Olsen
Template:Boston Celtics 1985-86 NBA champions - Williams

I think you should leave Palazzi off, because neither link really settles things beyond reasonable doubt. That first link doesn't explicitly say that he won a ring with the Celtics; it just says he is listed as playing for the team during that season. And the Celtics' official site isn't put together with the best of care, so I wouldn't use that as the final arbitrator. The statistics they list for Palazzi are his combined numbers for the Celtics and the Nationals; in truth, he only played 21 games for the Celtics that year. Zagalejo^^^ 17:42, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Looking at the Sporting News Official NBA Guide, Butler finished the 1961-62 season with the Knicks, Foley finished the 1962-63 season with the Knicks, and Olsen finished the 1968-69 season with Detroit, so I don't think we should add them to the templates. Looks like Sly Williams was cut by the Celtics in December 1985, based on a quick newspaper search. So, I'd recommend leaving him off, too. Zagalejo^^^ 20:21, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Just to indicate my sentiments here, my opinion is also that the championship templates should only be populated by players who received a championship ring that season. Players who are waived or traded during the season may have contributed to the team's regular season record up to some point, but few people would consider them to have earned the right to be called a "champion". As a result, leaving their names on the template can give a misleading impression. It could also lead to confusion in the future if people want to audit the numbers given in List of National Basketball Association players with most championship rings. I don't believe any of the current list entries would be affected, but the templates could not be used as a direct validation source if the players listed in the templates did not necessarily earn championship rings. — Myasuda (talk) 03:36, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Myasuda, I understand your thinking, but then that raises the question: What if a important player gets injured at some point in the season, doesn't return, but his team still win the championship? Should be on the list? Say, for example, the Rockets won a championship without Yao (very unlikely, but just an example). Should Yao be on the list as a champion? By the above reasoning, he shouldn't be. He would be no more contributing to the team that the traded or released player would be. Noble Story (talk) 02:11, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

That's a different situation than the ones above. All of those players were traded, sold, or released by the teams before those teams won their championships. Yao would presumably still be on the Rockets' roster at the time of the championship and would receive a ring, even without appearing in the playoffs. Zagalejo^^^ 02:18, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Template:Infobox NBA Player

I added "official profile" to the infobox, but it should only be shown if a player is in the NBA, as links to people who are not in the NBA do not exist. Could somebody please help and edit it so that "official profile" is shown only if the infobox includes "league = NBA (or National Basketball Association"? The "official profile" currently displays if {{{league}}} is NBA, [[NBA]], or [[National Basketball Association|NBA]]. However, a problem is that the infobox by default uses the Wikipedia article name to make the link. The playerfiles' naming convention is different, so articles with titles such as Žydrūnas Ilgauskas, T. J. Ford, Mike Dunleavy, Jr., and Clifford R. Robinson, and Tony Allen (basketball) would have dead links. I've made the optional {{{profile}}} for these special titles, so use them if necessary. Territorial picks

I was looking through some NBA Draft articles, and I noticed that none properly account for the territorial picks of the earlier years. Take Wilt Chamberlain, for example. He was taken as a territorial pick of the Philadelphia Warriors before the 1959 NBA Draft. However, our article lists him as the third pick overall. I'm guessing that the Warriors would have owned the third pick if they hadn't used their territorial selection, but they did use the territorial pick, so our article is not entirely accurate.

I think each draft article should have a separate section for territorial picks. I'll get to work on that soon. But if anyone objects, let me know. Zagalejo^^^ 17:50, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Seattle Supersonics

As much as I hate to do this, I think we need to come up with a decision on what to do with the Seattle Supersonics article if indeed they move from Seattle. I propose that we do NOT merge the Sonics article with a new OKC team article, and keep the Sonics as a seperate article. Unlike teams like the Hornets and the Grizzlies, the Sonics have 40 years of history that would no doubtly get lost in OKC, especially if they change their identity. What do you guys think? • Conditionally If the Sonics move to OKC, and change their name (as it seems they might), then it should definitely have a separate article. However, if they don't, then...I can't tell. Another thing is that if the Sonics get an expansion team, as they seem to want now, then there will be the Seattle Sonics, the OKC XXX, and the new Seattle XXX articles, all floating around. NBA Draft Templates

Hey, just a quick question about NBA draft templates. Why are we only having the first round for some and the first and second for more recent ones? I know there were more rounds in the past and we can't have every round in a template, because it'd be ridiculously large, but I feel like we can keep both the first and second rounds for all of the drafts. That's probably because people aren't paying much attention to the lists, and don't add the information; however, I agree with you that we should have two rounds. Just to ensure that people are clear on the length of the drafts, note that prior to 1970, there were only four seasons in which the drafts extended to 20 rounds or more: 1960, 1967, 1968, and 1969. I think that all the rosters should be modeled like Boston Celtics all-time roster (letter T). Here is a small extract:

You're using rowspans and colspans in that table. They don't allow the table to be sortable. Try to sort the "No" column and you'll see what happens.--Crzycheetah 18:51, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Does this section really need to be sortable? Why would anyone want to sort the jersey numbers, colleges, etc. of just the Celtics players whose last names began with T? Sortability only makes sense when you have one long, undivided list. Zagalejo^^^ 19:14, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

That jersey column I used was just an example that sortability doesn't work. I really like the table at Charlotte Bobcats all-time roster; one long sortable table. Granted, there are fewer Bobcats players than Celtics'.--Crzycheetah 20:03, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

NBA rosters

I believe that every current roster should be copied to a seasonal template. For instance, a new template should be created with the name "Template:2007-08 Boston Celtics roster", with all the content taken from Template:Boston Celtics roster (as of the end of the season). By doing that, the rosters of the 2007-08 season are preserved, while the current rosters can be continuously updated. The template in the respective season article (in this case, 2007-08 Boston Celtics season) should then be changed from "Template:Boston Celtics roster" to "Template:2007-08 Boston Celtics roster". The new seasonal template should then not be touched again.

Template:NBA season

• At the beginning of the season, each team has a record of 0-0. But according to the template, the wins will be divided by the total number of games. However, dividing by 0 results in an error.
• If a team has a number of wins, but no losses, the calculated record will show ".1000" instead of "1.000"

Done. Here is a summary of the necessary steps in calculating percentage:

• If (wins + losses = 0) is true, then it outputs ".000".
• If the above statement is false (i.e. the team has played games) and (losses = 0) (i.e. the team has wins but no losses), then it outputs "1.000" instead of "0.1000".
• If the two statements above are false, the percentage times 1000 must be padded left with '0' over 3 places in case the team's percentage is below 10% (e.g. a 1–10 record would output ".091" instead of ".91"). —LOL (talk) 17:02, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

New Playoffs Template Proposal

Hello all, I have created the following new template, located at Template:NBAbox. My main goal was creating a simpler format to enter in the information and perhaps reduce the space necessitated for each series, and I believe I have achieved both of these criteria. Here is an example of how it would look for the first round:

I'm not sure what you mean by "information". Do you mean fields (variables)? The amount of information that will be output is exactly the same as the current standard. I added more fields so that editors won't have to manually calculate the total playoff wins and losses after every single playoff game. Template:NBA season

Hey, can somebody please help me out? I am trying to make it easier for editors on the respective season page of a team; the editor shouldn't enter e.g. "1^st", but rather "1", and Template:NBA season would automate the rest. The same goes for the conference place; people would only have to enter a number from 1 to 15 (or TBA/TBD), and the template would fill in the rest. Here's what I have come up with, but somehow it is wrong at some point.

I tried to tweak it. Here's basically what it does:

• Attempt to display (division_place + 0); if it is a number, then it will work and append "<sup>".

• Determine what ordinal suffix to use. Any number that is not 1, 2, or 3 will append "th".
• Append "</sup>".

• If there is an error while trying to perform a mathematical operation on division_place, just output the string. (For example, "3^rd" will go through this path because "^rd" is not part of a number.

The summary above also applies to conf_place.

Another thing I have been thinking of, is to implement the respective division/conference names by a 2-letter abbreviation. I think it would look nice like that: 5^th (SE) 13^th (E) I also think it would look better as mentioned above than just mentioning the respective division/conference below the arena parameter. The abbreviation would have to be as follows:

• Southeast --> [[Southeast Division (NBA)|SE]]
• Atlantic --> [[Atlantic Division (NBA)|AC]]
• Central --> [[Central Division (NBA)|CE]]
• Southwest --> [[Southwest Division (NBA)|SW]]
• Northwest --> [[Northwest Division (NBA)|NW]]
• Pacific --> [[Pacific Division (NBA)|PA]]
• East --> [[Eastern Conference (NBA)|E]]
• West --> [[Western Conference (NBA)|W]]

On the respective season pages, people would have to enter for {{{division}}}: Southeast/southeast/SE/se (same for all other divisions), and for {{{conference}}}: Eastern/eastern/East/east/E/e. Currently I have it set up so that only division needs to be assigned. However, the conference will not show if something other than the six cases is entered. I like this idea because it sets a standard and reduces the amount of hardcoding within the articles, but since the NBA has made some changes to its divisions over the course of its history, I'm wondering what needs to be done to compensate for the old groupings. —LOL (talk) 20:31, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
