Proxy voting

We will offer the option of proxy voting for those Wikimedia NYC members unable to attend this meeting. If you wish to exercise this option, then please specify in this section which fellow member you would like to designate as your proxy:

  • - Blurpeace as my proxy James of UR (talk) 18:23, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
  • - In the event that I am somehow a member of Wikimedia New York City, I hereby designate Aude to cast votes on my behalf. I impose no restriction on her ability to vote on my behalf. I feel like I should be signing something. Oh well. Harej (talk) 03:43, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Fireworks

Did someone say something about meeting in Clinton Park, Hell's Kitchen, to see the show? Jim.henderson (talk) 15:48, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Launching as Wikimedia NYC community discussion page

I've talked this over with Blurpeace, and since this is certainly by far the most watched page among NYC Wikimedians (on any wiki), we've decided to launch this as the "official"-ish Wikimedia NYC community discussion page for general topics, i.e. not just the monthly meetup. Hopefully this move to the English Wikipedia (where the people are!) will encourage greater transparency and also greater and broader participation.--Pharos (talk) 16:20, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

I support this page as being the center for discussions. Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:13, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Ditto, although I'd be happy to explain my reasoning if anyone should so ask. Best, Blurpeace 22:01, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

July 25 Wikimedia NYC conference call minutes

We would like to share these more regularly going forward: meta:Wikimedia New York City/2012July25.--Pharos (talk) 12:05, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

WP:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan in September

We're planning WTM 4.0 as part of Wiki Loves Monuments 2012; possibly on Saturday September 15 in conjunction with Software Freedom Day. For this, it would be great to get the List of New York City Landmarks pages fully updated with WLM-compatible templates, so they we can include these locally designated landmarks as well as the NRHP ones in the contest. I've started {{NYCLP header}} and {{NYCLP row}} to try to get this infrastructure going...--Pharos (talk) 21:29, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Next actual meeting?

When should we have an actual meetup again? I was thinking for sometime in late September. The only thing that came to mind is, when are we going to have some event in Queens? I'd like to give my home borough some love too, ya know. Mitch32(There is a destiny that makes us... family.) 21:38, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

August 29 Wikimedia NYC conference call minutes

I would like to thank Lane for again taking minutes for our most recent conference call - August 29 Minutes - highlights include plans for a Wikimedia United States / North America Federation and the Wikipedia Takes Manhattan photo event on September 15. Please share you thoughts here on the ideas raised during the call, including a Consumer Reports labs tour in early October. What do you think?--Pharos (talk) 14:10, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

If the case that the tour is on a weekday, I reiterate my suggestion for a new meetup, especially using my in-Queens suggestion above. Mitch32(Victim of public education, 17 years and counting) 19:16, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

October Meetup date

What about October 13 for an Odessa Diner meetup?--Pharos (talk) 04:26, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Wow! Great, let's do it. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:57, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

See you folks this Saturday! Please add your ideas to the agenda.--Pharos (talk) 16:28, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Reminder: the meetup is today!--Pharos (talk) 16:52, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Meetup?

I know this isn't the best time to go around asking, but we should really have one before January. Mitch32(Victim of public education, 17 years and counting) 00:29, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

WP:Wikipedia Goes to the Movies event - postponed

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing transit issues arising from Hurricane Sandy, we have been forced to postpone the WP:Wikipedia Goes to the Movies event that was scheduled for Saturday.

We will try to reschedule for sometime in late November (possibly the 17th).--Pharos (talk) 18:16, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

It's rescheduled for December 1. -- kosboot (talk) 01:54, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

I just put up a new meetup.com event page for Dec 1 if people would like to sign up and share that around.--Pharos (talk) 05:41, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Consumer Reports Tour - Jan 15

This should be awesome, so sign up today: Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/January 2013!--Pharos (talk) 19:51, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

BPL = WLL?

Can't the Brooklyn event be considered a Wikipedia Loves Libraries event? -- kosboot (talk) 23:14, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

It certainly could!! WLL was always meant to be a very flexible kind of program.--Pharos (talk) 04:25, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

April 2013 Meetup

I've been talking to a couple of people about about Sunday April 14 for this, if that works. Maybe the Symposium or some other place uptown, we haven't done anything in that neighborhood since spring of last year. What do folks think?--Pharos (talk) 21:55, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

  • I already agreed that 4/14 was possibly a good choice. I will check with the Symposium for availability. - Becksguy (talk) 17:04, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
  • I'll see you folks this afternoon!--Pharos (talk) 14:46, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

May and June events

I am looking to reserve a room at Jefferson Market Library for our Chapter Annual Meeting; this could be for either the morning of May 18, or for the afternoon of June 1. Also, I am trying to plan the WP:Wiknic for June 22.--Pharos (talk) 15:54, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

NYC Wikipedian-in-Residence for METRO non-profit GLAM consortium

This is a great opportunity, please see details here. The deadline is technically today, though I think they might be a little more flexible as applications have been a bit slow to come in.--Pharos (talk) 19:27, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

June 2013 Election: Proxy voting

We will offer the option of proxy voting for those Wikimedia NYC members unable to attend this meeting. If you wish to exercise this option, then please specify in this section which fellow member you would like to designate as your proxy:

  • I, James Hare, member Wikimedia New York City, select Jim Henderson to be my proxy. Harej (talk) 18:42, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
  • -User:Jeremyb is my proxy. He can vote for me as he sees fit. --Aude (talk) 21:12, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
  • - In the event that I am also somehow a member of Wikimedia New York City, I hereby designate Bluerasberry to cast votes on my behalf. I also impose no restriction on his ability to vote on my behalf. I also feel like I should be signing something. Oh well. My only proviso is that the group there should ask him to sing something relating to the general topic of Wikipedia if they feel so inclined.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 21:38, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
  • - Due to my late pullout, I hereby designate Mitchazenia as my proxy. He may vote for me as he sees fit. Daniel Case (talk) 14:41, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
  • In the event I am unable to attend today's meeting, I designate User:Pharos to exercise a proxy vote in my behalf. I have also provided him with my short statement as a candidate for board reelection, which I ask him to read or ask someone to read for me. Newyorkbrad (talk) 16:32, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Reminder: Editathon Saturday

This Saturday, June 15: Wikipedia:Wikipedia con Sabor Latino; the location is at New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. We could always use more volunteer Wikipedians to help the newbies, as we've had rather high Facebook signups (if that counts for something)!--Pharos (talk) 08:09, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Wiknic

I expect to join a biker gang at Grand Army Plaza at 10 and abandon them somewhere on the Red Hook waterfront after noon to pedal up the hill to Prospect Park. Being on wheels I can search, but do we have an unambiguous location? Early reports had us at the Oriental Pavilion, east of Long Meadow near the Q line, but now it seems to be by (south side?) of Picnic House, on the west side of Long Meadow closer to the F line. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:31, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Yes, It's been moved to the Picnic House area, as the official permit didn't come through.--Pharos (talk) 19:41, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Oof, 51 miles biking today; wikiphotoexpedition to Tottenville. Always bite off more than I can chew. Saturday not so tough; I'll arrive late from David Meltzer's "Nibbling on the Fringe" ride on the Brooklyn waterfront, advertised in his Facebook page. I'll promote the Wiknic to my ride buddies and on my brandnew Facebook page. Adam "Mitch" and I will fetch from Target or wherever, whatever's lacking for maximum fun and minumum health eating. Jim.henderson (talk) 20:31, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Greenwich Village event

How can we let total newbies who don't know about this page know that this will include a teach-in and basic help with learning how to edit WP? Also, I suggest linking and printing out copies of the WP:cheatsheet. -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:41, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

I have posted about this on my facebook page and have tweeted it a couple of times as well. I was planning to post again closer to the event. There are event postings also: NYPL event listing -- as well as the Meetup and Eventbrite links. I was thinking I would post the information to my Library School mailing list as well.... I am very excited for the event! BrillLyle (talk) 21:13, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
Like. -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:21, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Brooklyn Branch

I should have signed up earlier and learned about the Brooklyn Branch. Six bright young sheep were wandering around Quincy Street, trying to guide each other. They went "baaa" with delight when a silly old guy showed up to guide them over the rough spots. I lectured on the difference between good refs and bad, and showed how connect them crudely (actually, that's one of my weak spots but anyway) and how to upload a picture. I told sad stories of lame edit wars, starring me, of course. They wanted to write biographies of artists, and illustrate them with pictures from the subject's personal website, so I had to tell them about the copyright pitfalls of that approach.

Anyway I had a delightful time. Oof, young people nowadays. In my day we were just as cute and quick, but we weren't anywhere near as nice or thoughtful. We broke up around 4PM when two had appointments. I didn't get their usernames or even the names of their articles. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:13, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Do general meetups still exist?

Are there ever meetups anymore that are just social-type events for Wikipedia editors? Every time I check in on the meetup page anymore, I see themed, structured editathons aimed at bringing in non-Wikipedians. Don't get me wrong, editathons are great things, and so is recruiting new editors, but I miss having social events that were basically hangouts for people who all shared the same hobby. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 22:07, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

+1. I'd be interested in attending a social meetup (but it'd need to be scheduled more than 3 days in advance ;-)). James F. (talk) 00:57, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes, unfortunately it's been a bit difficult scheduling regular social meetups recently, given the unprecedented "demand" for editathons from different institutions. But we're coming back! The most recent social meetup was in December. And the next one with a social (dinner and bar) component will likely be Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/NYU Law on Saturday March 8.--Pharos (talk) 15:36, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Meetup invites

To @Pharos: and whomever may send out invites... could we ensure the posts include timestamps? At least with some configurations, the bots won't move the post to the talk page archives unless there's a datestamp. Thank you! P.S. I vow to actually make it out to one of these events someday soon :) — MusikAnimal talk 15:07, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, we'll be sure to include the timestamps in future.--Pharos (talk) 20:09, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

April 2014 Meetup Dates

I'd like to get feedback on potential April 2014 Meetup dates. The potential Saturdays and Sundays are April 5, 6, 19, 26 & 27 (leaving out Wikimedia Conference 2014 on the 12-13th and Easter on the 20th). What dates are good for people?--Pharos (talk) 20:17, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

April 6 & 27 are good for me - thanks. -- kosboot (talk) 20:37, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
I'd love to finally be able to attend! Any Saturday in April works for me, but I can't do Sundays unless it's in the evening. I would also like to add my vote for something more social and generally informative rather than following a specific theme, since it would be my first meetup with the group. Thanks! -- nycdi (talk) 13:58, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

WikiConference USA in NYC?

Hi, I just found the page for the WikiConference USA totally by accident. I don't even know what led me there, but I haven't seen any reference to it in the NYC pages and I didn't know about this event, since I hadn't received an invitation. It's happening in NYC May 30 - June 1. Why isn't it listed here, or on the Calendar page? Is it organized by a different group? Still, I think it should be promoted by the NYC chapter. Sorry, I sometimes find the chapter group and event pages a bit confusing and just thought I'd add it here in case anyone else wanted the info. Thanks! nycdi (talk) 14:41, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Saturday May 10 event

My apologies, sent this through mailing lists, but not here till now - Wikipedia Asian Pacific American Edit-a-Thon on Saturday May 10, 2014--Pharos (talk) 20:04, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Spoken Wikipedia

Wikimedia NYC's newly elected board member AbhiSuryawanshi is visiting NYC from India July 15-39 and wishes to record people reading Wikipedia articles as described in Wikipedia:WikiProject New York/Spoken Wikipedia. This is a replication of a model used in India in which he organized people reading Wikipedia articles there, to make audio versions for those unable to read the pages. Anyone is invited to participate either while he is here or with his support after he returns to India. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:10, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Saturday July 26 Spoken Wikipedia / Multilingual Workshop

We'd like to especially invite those interested in multilingual issues to join us in Brooklyn Saturday! It's going to be a smaller meetup, but hopefully an innovative one. Plus, Shakespeare in the Parking Lot :)--Pharos (talk) 18:24, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

Sunday August 17 Wiki-Salon and Skill Share

Hopefully this can be a return to form of some of the old regular Columbia University meetups, and incorporate skill share and other workshop-type aspects as well. Here are some post-5pm wiki-dinner options, if folks would like to share their opinions here! Also, the new space has a Baby Grand piano, if anyone can think of a good use for that :)--Pharos (talk) 15:47, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Sunday August 24 Westchester County Edit-a-thon

Please check it out, and sign up if you're interested in jumpstarting local wiki-activism in that noble county: Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Westchester.--Pharos (talk) 07:20, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Which date?

The meetup page says the event is "Wednesday, September 30." September 30 is a Tuesday; Wednesday is October 1. So, which is it? Paging Pharos and Bluerasberry. Thanks, Harej (talk) 17:57, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

Salubrious Toxin This is Tuesday 30 September, right? Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:03, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Tuesday, 9/30! Sorry about that. We're trying to partner with other interest groups on campus, and scheduling with them requires a lot of back-and-forth. Salubrious Toxin (talk) 18:12, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for clarifying Salubrious Toxin. Harej (talk) 18:21, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Sweet see you in 2 weeks Harej! Let me know if you have any questions. Also, thank you for posting this on the main NYC meetup page! Salubrious Toxin (talk) 18:26, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

Tuesday September 30 Thank you, sub-page

Thank you, everyone, for your support! We had a good time on 9/30. I added some info on what we accomplished at our edit-a-thon at the bottom of the event page. I'm not sure how to do this, but at some point feel free to move the edit-a-thon info back to a subpage of the NYC Meet up page at this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Healthcare_EM@Sinai Salubrious Toxin (talk) 14:24, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Thursday December 4 Wiki-Salon and Skill Share

Hope folks and join and add their ideas to the agenda and suggest lightning talks they can give. Also, help us pick a restaurant for after!--Pharos (talk) 07:08, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Wikidata game - broken?

Not sure about others, but logging in to the Wikidata game doesn't work for me. I've left a message on the appropriate Wikidata page: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:The_Game. -- kosboot (talk) 17:44, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

It's working for me - I logged into WiDaR here. It's also possible it was just down for a bit, but it's certainly working now.--Pharos (talk) 15:03, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

Anyway much of what was said went over my head, no failure since it fit most the audience. And I learned how to repair wrong coordinates and taught someone how to supply coordinates to an unlocated corporation. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:23, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Thursday Dec 18: ISOC-NY Holiday Party at BLIP space in DUMBO

Our Free Culture Alliance NYC friends at ISOC-NY are holding their holiday party this Thursday Dec 18, which will be held that evening at 7:45pm in the same BLIP space in DUMBO as yesterday's Wikidata workshop (with an earlier .NYC panel starting at 6:30). All are invited!--Pharos (talk) 19:14, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Why doesn't each event have it's own page?

Shouldn't an event live on it's own page (or sub-page)? In this manner the url never changes.

This page should be a list of upcoming events; an index to events past and future.

When the meetup page says,

See full details on-wiki here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC

it should make sense. CmdrDan (talk) 17:55, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Because our software doesn't double redirects, so WP:MEET/NYC and the other redirects would break. A way around this would be to transclude {{Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/December Wikidata}}, which would also reduce the post-event administrative work. — Dispenser 05:18, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
We solved this problem in DC by making Wikipedia:Meetup/DC a landing page, with events being created as subpages, e.g. Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/December 2014. The shortcut would always point to the same page, which would be updated every time there is a new meetup. Harej (talk) 03:13, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
The advantage of keeping it at the main Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC page is that page is watchlisted by hundreds of people, and we can have higher visibility and participation for events here. The disadvantage of a link that goes out of date can be fixed by created an alias before the event, as Dorothy has rather helpfully done here, and as would be good practice to continue in future.--Pharos (talk) 19:48, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Coming WikiWednesdays: May TBD & June 10 as Annual Meeting ?

After the event on April 29, we have limited availability at Babycastles for May; they can only do Memorial Day, and that might not be great for many people. So, we might pick another venue or just skip May, as anyway there should be plenty of editathons that month! For WikiWednesday at Babycastles on June 17, my idea is to have the Annual Meeting then.--Pharos (talk) 04:09, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

OK, I think we'll probably skip on the Memorial Day option, and maybe go ahead with the Annual Meeting on June 17.--Pharos (talk) 15:18, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
June 10 seems more likely for the Annual Meeting now.--Pharos (talk) 17:06, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
