Wikipedia Workshop and Editathon Event
London 2023 or Virtual

Hands-on workshop to help improve health content that people are accessing online

Join us at the Cochrane Colloquium or from home as we gather to improve Wikipedia articles with Cochrane Evidence. We will learn to edit Wikipedia and use online sources from the Cochrane Library to update related Wikipedia articles. Experienced Wikipedians will be on hand to provide training and guidance.

Laptops are required; please bring your own. New editors are strongly encouraged to create a Wikipedia account before the day of the event.

When: Sept 5 2023 11-12:30 (or anytime that week on your own)

Where: In person: Chaucer or join us by following the steps and participate on your own time online!

Before the Workshop edit

  • Please create a Wikipedia Username here: Create a user login
  • Suggested reading: Medical Editing Cheat Sheet
  • Come prepared with a list of Cochrane Evidence that you are interested in adding to Wikipedia (or see our suggested worklist below)
  • Don't forget your computer and Wikipedia password/login.

Note: This is for use on the day of the event, please register for the workshop via the Colloquium link above.
1) Select 'Sign in'
2) Scroll down on the page that follows and click 'Publish changes'.
Your username will automatically be added to the list of attendees.

Event Schedule edit

  • 11:00 Welcome message, introductions, and share event page link.
  • 11:10 Option 1: Participate in a 5-10 minute introduction to medical editing seminar (by Jennifer Dawson, PhD, Wikipedia Consultant for Cochrane)
Option 2. If you are an experienced Wikipedian you are welcome to start editing right away.
  • 11:30 Begin adding Cochrane Evidence! Register on this page (sign in button above) and all Participants should be logged in to their respective accounts before starting to edit. Experienced Wikipedia editors will be available to answer questions and assist new editors.
  • 12:20 Event Wrap Up

Suggested Work list edit

  • Participants are encouraged to bring a list of Cochrane Reviews that they are interested in adding to Wikipedia.
  • In addition, we have two Cochrane-Wikipedia Projects that are setup for new editors to get started.

1. Improving the Evidence Base of Wikipedia Using Cochrane Reviews.

About the project: Volunteers access a list of all Cochrane Reviews not presently used in Wikipedia (above link). Search for a Review that interests you, paraphrase the conclusions, and find a place for the evidence in Wikipedia.
How long will it take? 5-10 minutes/Cochrane Review.

2. Keeping Cochrane evidence up to date on Wikipedia (Cochrane Bot Update Project).

Cochrane Updates needed on Wikipedia (updated monthly at the beginning of the month)
About the project: A bot created list of Cochrane Reviews for which a newer version is available to replace the older one that is currently used in an article.
Can I get involved? Yes! Follow the simple instructions and if the conclusions have changed in the Cochrane Review update the Wikipedia reference and/or the text
How long will it take? 5 minutes+, depending on whether the text needs updating in the Wiki article.
