History edit

A paragraph or two establishing how the community got started, where it got its name, any significant historical facts.
It is important to set a precedent by referencing all facts.

The official city, chamber of commerce, school, city and county historical websites are good sources.

Sources found and not used as references should be listed in the External links if they are websites and Further reading if they are books or news stories, this is for future editors improving on the article, especially important for first priority run.

A more in depth accounting of the history of the community in chronological order. May require the use of book references.

A very detailed history with references cited for 100% of the facts.

More examples of what to include in this section can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline#History.

Geography edit

A standard part of the stub program but needs some additional input.

The standard stub program installed a Coord template in this area before the Infobox settlement template was created. The usefulness of this template was later replaced by the use of the Infobox settlement template.

If the Coord template is still in this location the coordinates need to be transferred to the Infobox settlement template. Place the coordinates information in the proper parameters in the Infobox settlement template and then delete the Coord template. This is more fully documented at Wikipedia:WikiProject Iowa/Communities#Coordinates for communities.

The decimal coordinates can be retained in this section and specified like this:
Hiawatha's longitude and latitude coordinates in decimal form are 42.044409, -91.681025.[1]
The code: Hiawatha's longitude and latitude coordinates in decimal form are 42.044409, -91.681025.

Examples of other information to place in this section:

The average elevation of Hiawatha is 850 feet above sea level.[2]
The code: The average elevation of Hiawatha is 850 feet above sea level.

Hiawatha's population density is estimated at 1884 people per square mile which is considered low for urban areas.[2]
The code: Hiawatha's population density is estimated at 1884 people per square mile which is considered low for urban areas.

Neighborhoods edit

Defined and officially recognized neighborhoods are to be included here.

Demographics edit

The population and statistical information (in prose style) from the 2000 census was a standard part of the stub program.
The original stub program did not include a Historical Population table.

Some of the blue-links have been redirected, they need to be repaired and sometimes this data has been vandalized. If the information looks suspect it needs to be verified. Two templates Historical populations and US Census population have been used to display a table of population statistics in some articles. Either template works, although all articles without tables should utilize the standardized template US Census population. If you are so inclined to convert the older Historical populations to the newer US Census population you may do so, be aware there are differences in the templates, it is not just a copy and paste. Also seen is user defined tables, these should be replaced with a US Census population template. An editor acting in good faith thought it looked more visually appealing to shorten the table if the article did not contain sufficient text content in proportion to the table. Do not assume a short population history table as correct as almost all Iowa towns were established by 1950. Any short table should be verified and extended if needed. A downloadable pdf file of incorporated city populations 1850-2000 for Iowa can be found at Iowa Data Center.

All articles should have a verified and updated population table.
The 2000 census data will remain in the articles.
The addition of 2010 statistical information will show the changes in the demographics of the community.

Example
Hiawatha
Historical Populations
CensusPop.Note
19601,336
19702,41680.8%
19804,885102.2%
19904,9862.1%
20006,48030.0%
2009 (est.)6,697[2]
Iowa Data Center

Hiawatha, Iowa was incorporated in 1950, therefore its first census was in 1960.

The template code for US Census population in detail:

The template documentation for US Census population does not show the title parameter and defaults to a title of Historical Populations. The |align= parameter does have 2 other choices (= center, = none) both are discouraged as the text will not wrap around the table leaving a lot of white space. The template can be expanded with more years for example |1950= to at least |1850= (US census data does not exist for years prior to 1850 as far as this user knows). The comma separating the thousands digits from the hundreds digits or millions digits is automatically inserted. If you prefer the US Census Bureau as a source, it can be used instead of or in conjunction with the Iowa Data Center as a reference.

Notable people edit

Change the section header to Notable people
There are many headers in use, some examples but not all:

 • Notable residents
 • Notable natives and residents
 • Famous people

==Notable people== <!-- consensus reached to standardize this heading per WikiProject Cities/US Guideline -->
Insert Wikicode NOTICE if not already installed - make sure it is the latest version
See example of Wikicode NOTICE lower in this section.
Establish references for at least 25% of entries, NULLIFY any "red linked" listings that do not have an creditable external link

To find Notable people who may have a relationship to a community

In the Toolbox on the left side of the page selecting What links here option will give you a list of all pages with a wikilink to the page you are on. Be aware it defaults to showing only the first 50 links, you may have to change the option to more views or do a succession of next 50 views. More information can be found in the Help file at What links here. You can also reach the What links here page by Special:WhatLinksHere and entering in the page name of the article you are searching for links to. You may also bookmark the page for future use.
Establish references for at least 50% of entries
Establish references for 100% of entries and turn the list into prose.
A separate page called a List of people from CITY X can be made when the number of entries on the Notable people exceeds 25. This reduces the number of people on the main page to just the most important Notables.

Wikicode NOTICE edit

This is the notice to be put into all articles at the place famous people lists or prose are used.
<!-- NOTICE * * * NOTICE * * * NOTICE * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *NOTICE * * * NOTICE * * * NOTICE
Only people who already have a Wikipedia article may appear here as Notable people. This establishes notability.
All others will be deleted without further explanation.
The biographical article should say how they are associated with THIS CITY examples = born, raised, residing etc.
An external reliable source of their association with THIS CITY should be cited in their Article and MUST be cited HERE.
Alphabetical by last name please. Use a short one line description of Notability.
If the person you think is Notable and does not have a Wikipedia Article for themselves create one.
Guidelines for the Notability of a person can be found by entering WP:PEOPLE in the wiki search.
Guidelines on what is needed and how to write the Article can be found by entering WP:MOSBIO in the wiki search.
END OF NOTICE * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * END OF NOTICE * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *END OF NOTICE -->

The NULLIFY

The NULLIFY is used to deter repeated reentry of non notable people.
The NULLIFY encases the "red linked" entries therefore preventing them from appearing in the article.
Example: <!-- NULLIFIED Noname Person NULLIFIED per NOTICE above -->

1st Priority edit

Check all references for validity.
If a reference is no longer viable do not remove it, instead place the template Dead link after the last bracket ] or } and the </ref>.
Check all links in the External links section for title correctness and website descriptions.
If the link is not informational for the community or is just for advertisement delete the link.
