March 26

edit

As a longtime fan of Dolby's, I was quite surprised to learn that he was a member of this group. Our articles don't go into detail about his membership. Was this a publicity stunt or is he actually bat-shit-crazy? Joefromrandb (talk) 04:10, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He doesn't want to be blinded by science. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 05:41, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
He had an album named The Flat Earth, so it could be a publicity stunt for that, or he could be a few bricks short of a full load. StuRat (talk) 07:06, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As our article says, his membership number is 000001 so he may well have refounded it as a publicity stunt. --TammyMoet (talk) 09:02, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This article gives the recent history of the Flat Earth Society. Dolby didn't found or refound it, but the organiser Daniel Shenton was influenced by Dolby's 1984 album The Flat Earth, and therefore he gave Dolby the membership number 000001 when he re-convened the society in 2009. Not sure about Dolby's actual beliefs. --Colapeninsula (talk) 12:40, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Shenton is member #00002.[1] --Colapeninsula (talk) 12:42, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not at all convinced that the post-2004 incarnation of the FES is at all serious. It seems to me like they're doing it for an ironic laugh to poke fun of people who actually believe in flat-earth.
I could be wrong though. It so hard to tell nowadays. APL (talk) 19:33, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, for $9 it might be interesting to get their literature and such to find out and meanwhile have a good laugh at others' beliefs. :P Dismas|(talk) 21:20, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is that the annual renewal, or is it a flat fee? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:12, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have similar thoughts about PETA and the Westboro Baptist people. But like you say, it's hard to tell... Adam Bishop (talk) 22:21, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
