Login issue

edit

Why do I have to log in anew each time, even though I check "Keep me logged in for a year"? It's a bother, so I don't bother most of the time. Krok6kola (talk) 00:20, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Krok6kola If your browser is set to clear cookies automatically, or you browse in private/incognito mode, that feature will not work. 331dot (talk) 00:35, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Krok6kola, added a header. The answer probably lies in issues with your cookies. Make sure you have cookies enabled for Wikipedia, and you use the same browser each time without restarting the app. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 00:37, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Krok6kola Some web browsers don't save individual sessions, best option is checking your browser settings for Wikipedia and making sure cookies are enabled properly. -- StarryNightSky11 01:22, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
StarryNightSky11 But why am I automatically logged in to Meta, Commons etc. It's only the wikis that this problems started when they installed the new skin (without notifying users). Krok6kola (talk) 18:01, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Searching for RfC

edit

I'm looking for old RfCs discussing television episode lists but I can't seem to find one. If anyone knows of one let me know. I've been looking into podcast episode lists and I'm thinking about opening an RfC, but I want to see if I can find an RfC on similar lists before doing so. TipsyElephant (talk) 02:29, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have an answer for you TE, but podcast episode lists have been on my mind for a minute and I'd appreciate a ping if you start an RfC. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:37, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TipsyElephant: Hi there! If you don't receive an answer here, you might want to ask the editors at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television (if you haven't done so already). Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 14:05, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit on al-Badr labeling it as an terrorist organisation

edit

My recent edit on al-Badr got reverted saying that it is not in accordance with the contentious topics policy. Whereas the policy states that value laden labels such as terrorist can be used if there are multiple reliable sources for it. There are four reliable links in the very beginning stating that al-Badr is an terrorist group. Also US and India has designated it as a terrorist group. There are no solid reasons for reverting the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Parth.297 (talkcontribs) 09:42, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Parth.297 It would help if you would "re-cite" the references that support the "terrorist" tag, right after the word "terrorist". That is, create another "ref", inline, that points to the reliable source(s). The way you made your edit, it appears that your addition is unreferenced or unsupported. As long as the sources are truly reliable, that edit should stick -- although a more experienced editor might disagree with me -- that's a loaded word. David10244 (talk) 10:31, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@David10244 @Parth.297 The current state of the page shows a perfectly adequate explanation of the subject's status. It is mentioned in the lead and an entire section in the body is devoted to the matter. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 10:45, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Image transferred to Wikimedia; how to delete old version?

edit

Many years ago I made an image file and put it on Wikipedia. I have now transferred it to Wikimedia, and wording on the old file says it may be deleted. How? Afterbrunel (talk) 14:59, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Afterbrunel. I'm not sure whether this happens automatically, but in any case you can request its deletion by pasting {{db-f8}} at the top of File:Plymouth rail map 1891.gif. ColinFine (talk) 15:49, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Afterbrunel (talk) 16:31, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Editing/adding a credit to my page.

edit

I am Alan Campbell an actor....I wish to add a recent TV credit to my page. The last time I tried to do this myself I literally screwed the pooch and created a lot of visual issues with the TV portion of my credits. Another volunteer editor helped me out and saved the day. Not sure how it works to ask again for help. Probably not rocket science but seems to have escaped my very limited technical abilities. Anyone?

The new credit:

Show (Servant, Season 4 2023, Character; John Michele, Two episodes Aldoggy (talk) 16:56, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Aldoggy It's better to think of it as an article about you, and not "your page". You shouldn't edit it directly, but you may make a formal edit request(click for instructions) on the article talk page, describing the change you would like to see, then you don't have to worry about the formatting. 331dot (talk) 16:57, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thanks for the correction. I actually have a page but find I use Wiki more for other research so it's important to keep up to date. My bad. I'll see if I can figure it out.
Alan Aldoggy (talk) 17:03, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, the article here is Alan Campbell (actor). It's a fairly uncontroversial edit, but Wikipedia is not IMDb and does not have to list everything an actor does exhaustively.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:06, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. Just like to keep it up to date as I find more people use Wikipedia to research/confirm credits than use IMDB. At least those outside the entertainment industry. Thanks for the help. Aldoggy (talk) 17:13, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Aldoggy: Hi there! Wikipedia articles should be based on independent published reliable sources, not your personal knowledge or citing IMDb. You can use the edit request process mentioned above, or try the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 17:44, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Aldoggy "I actually have a page". What 331dot is saying is that Alan_Campbell_(actor) is an article about you. (You might have a page on some other site.) Calling that "your page" makes it sound like you own or control the article, which is not the case. Wikipedia is not social media, and we don't generally refer to articles as "pages". As 331dot says, using the edit request mechanism is the right way to ask for a change to an article about you. Cheers. David10244 (talk) 12:48, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks David for your insight. Much appreciated.

Forgot log in username

edit

Dear Wikipedia:

I have forgotten my username. So I have no way to log in and you have no method to resolve this problem. Can you help?

If I can't fix this problem, I will have to drop my membership.

Thanks,

Bill Rau 69.174.173.76 (talk) 17:59, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry. If you have forgotten your login information and did not attach an email address to your account to recover the password, you will need to create a new account. You should identify it on the user page as a successor to your old account("I am User5678, I was previously User1234 but lost access")331dot (talk) 18:01, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you forgot your username, try looking on the edit history logs of articles or talk pages you have edited to see if you recognize your username on an edit you made. -Arch dude (talk) 18:20, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you stored an email address in the account then you can use Special:PasswordReset. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:06, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting a user essay

edit

Hi Folks!! What is the pro's and con's of trying to delete a user essay? Is it allowed. Can they be sent to Afd for example? Particularly one that has been written to sway an Afd entry. Can it be sent to Afd? scope_creepTalk 18:17, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No, AFD is only for articles. See WP:MFD. ColinFine (talk) 18:23, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: Thanks. You can see the essay at Mfd shortly. scope_creepTalk 18:30, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Where would be the best location to place this alert?

ALERT ! Talk:Poland #Distortion of Polands History?

Ping welcome, Steue (talk) 19:23, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Steue, why would you need to place this anywhere? It seems to be about the article which is already being discussed in excruciating depth over at ArbCom. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 19:25, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's a whole shebang about this on WP:ARC already. ■ ∃ Madeline ⇔ ∃ Part of me ; 19:25, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Madeline.
But how should I know? It is not mentioned on Talk:Poland.
But I shall place a link on Talk:Poland.
