August 5

edit

In the "Notable people" at the end of this page I added 2 reliable sources for the last person on the list - Currer Biggs - but it is all a mess. Please fix up. Thanks 175.33.248.139 (talk) 08:37, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. The {{cite web}} templates have to be inside <ref></ref> tags. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 08:49, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ref number 40 needs to be removed -dead link. Please do this if you can thanks175.33.248.139 (talk) 10:19, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, as you have been told on countless occasions, we don't start a new section with the same name as an existing section.
Secondly, we don't remove a link just because it is dead. Please read WP:Link rot. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:46, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Contact details for Gregorian chant in North America.

Please, let me know how to contact the musicologist Leo Treitler, or who can provide me analogous address to reach individuals with the importance in this sphere. Thank you so much, Anthea Grasselli. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.144.108.138 (talkcontribs) 5 August 2019 08:39 (UTC)

Hello, Anthea. This is the help desk for assistance in editing Wikipedia: this is not the kind of question we can answer here. It is possible that somebody could help at the Humanities section of the Reference Desk, but it's a rather abstruse area, so I wouldn't be too hopeful. Our article Leo Treitler says that he is a Distinguished Professor at City University of New York: perhaps you could try to contact him through there? --ColinFine (talk) 12:17, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Presumably it's this article, Brian Joy. It really needs WP:Reliable sources. If you have any, you can help by posting them at Talk:Brian Joy. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:37, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) There was a misplaced low-quality image in the article. Probably why it was removed There is another image of the subject alongside Pele in the infobox.
Further, please don't refer to the page as 'yours'. It is Wikipedia's page about you and you have almost no control over what the article contains. You should not (if the need arises) edit the article yourself but request edits via the article talk page. Please see WP:COI for more information. Thank you. Dayna Steele

edit

Why was Dayna Steele's page deleted? If I recreate it are you just going to delete it again and why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Susanneuhalfen (talkcontribs) 14:31, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dayna Steele gives you a link to the deletion log, including the link to WP:Articles for deletion/Dayna Steele. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:39, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Susanneuhalfen: The page was deleted following this discussion (click the link to see the comments). As it has been deleted as a result of a discussion, it is likely that it will be deleted again if recreated. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Thank you. Is it good form to use link shorteners like bit.ly in cases where the url is too long? Thanks. Jerry (talk) 19:02, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@JerrySa1: No, do not use link redirection sites. Provide the actual direct link. RudolfRed (talk) 19:11, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

RPI Basketball 1967-68

edit

Can anyone tell me whene I might obtain basketball game results for the period January -March 1968? I played for RPI at that time and would like to see game results if someone has a record of them````` — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gamecock 74 (talkcontribs) 19:27, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This is the help desk for using or editing Wikipedia, not for general knowledge questions. The folks over at the reference desk may be able to help you. -Arch dude (talk) 19:36, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gender survey

edit

Is there any way to hide or collapse the gender survey box? I don't want to answer it. I don't even want to engage it. How can it be made to disappear? schetm (talk) 19:33, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry Schetm, I've no idea what box you're talking about. Can you be clearer about when you are seeing this? --ColinFine (talk) 20:00, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
When I go into article space, I get a survey asking for a user's gender. It only appears in article space. I can't link to the survey, but I can link to WMF's privacy statement on the survey. Perhaps I should ask WMF directly. schetm (talk) 20:03, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Schetm: Here is info about the survey: [1] It says editors will be chosen for it randomly. Not sure about making it go away. You can post questions/comments on rthe discussion page there. RudolfRed (talk) 20:16, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much! schetm (talk) 20:19, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Image pixels

edit

The image File:Sault Tribe flag.png was 100 × 67 and therefore pretty difficult to see. I uploaded a 250 × 167 which was generally crisper. However, when I go on the image page, it still appears in low resolution, and when I click on it, it takes me to a 100x67 image. I have tried purging the page, but it does not appear to help. I guess what I'm asking is, does the image appear grainy to you? Or does the 250x167 version show up as it should? Ultimately, I'm wondering what I did wrong and if I actually fixed the problem or just complicated things. Thanks! --‡ Єl Cid of ᐺalencia ᐐT₳LKᐬ 20:14, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It looks reasonably hi-res to me, and is 250 × 167 pixels. Sometimes these things take a while to propagate. Maproom (talk) 21:29, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom (talk · contribs): thank you! I was assuming it was just taking a while to update on my end but I would have felt stupid if I managed to re-upload the same image somehow and claim I fixed something. Cheers! ‡ Єl Cid of ᐺalencia ᐐT₳LKᐬ 12:52, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Double redirect

edit

Hi, could someone please have a look at this? The page Arugula seems to be a redirect to the page Eruca sativa, which in turn is a redirect to Eruca vesicaria. Is that how it's supposed to be, or did something go wrong with that merger that is mentioned on the Eruca sativa page? Thanks! --217.239.10.14 (talk) 22:12, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's a 'hangover' from a merge carried out today. A 'bot' will usually get these but I have fixed it. Eagleash (talk) 22:17, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Seems a bit crazy that I should happen to hit on this page just when it was merged, of all days! --217.239.10.14 (talk) 22:54, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Placing a quote in parentheses after a person or fictional character

edit

In the context of a prose article, that is. Could anyone please tell me if this is ever acceptable?--Thylacine24 (talk) 22:23, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I can't think of an example, but I wouldn't like to claim it's impossible. Perhaps you have a particular case in mind? Maproom (talk) 06:41, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The example that inspired me to ask was from the article on Richard Erdman (links removed): "[Erdman played] the garrulous, tedious barfly McNulty in the Twilight Zone episode 'A Kind of a Stopwatch' ('...you think about that now!')."--Thylacine24 (talk) 16:53, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It might get accepted, but in fact is unencyclopedic.--Quisqualis (talk) 18:14, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
So, could you please tell me if I should leave it unedited or not?--Thylacine24 (talk) 21:50, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've taken it out. That quote adds nothing of value, and I've seen the episode. Someone who hasn't would be baffled. Clarityfiend (talk) 04:35, 7 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Sorry that I didn't respond earlier.--Thylacine24 (talk) 23:30, 8 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
