User Template

edit

How do I add the template that says if I'm online or offline to my user page? Schuym1 (talk) 02:04, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Which one? That page should give the code you need to add to your userpage - some of the more complicated ones need more detailed installation (namely the one I made) Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:09, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind then. Schuym1 (talk) 02:13, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia english classified as entertainment?

edit

Hi, I've always used wikipedia from my job computer, but today I could access the website because it was restricted since the page was classified as "Entertainment". It was not like that before. Could you keep your old classification in other I and others many users can access the site from their job computers? Thanks, Erick —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.248.195.172 (talk) 04:37, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's not anything to do with us; that's the web filter your business has set up. I'd recommend talking to whoever manages your network. Sorry. Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:38, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) Wikipedia does not create that classification. The software (such as Bess) does this. To remove the block you'll need to contact an IT person at your work. Scottydude talk 04:41, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Erich, I had the same problem on Thursday. I suspect your employer uses Websense, as mine does, for content filtering. If that's the case, the site categorizations are set by Websense Technologies, not by us. Their categorizations are semi-automated, and occasionally, they make an error. I was able to access Wikipedia on Friday, so I believe they have corrected the error. If you still cannot access Wikipedia from work, you'll probably need to contact your IT people there. This Help desk is for questions about how to use Wikipedia. Wikipedia does not have questionnaires. Ask your boss where to find the questionnaire. —teb728 t c 07:33, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over two million articles, and thought that we were directly affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the online free encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using the encyclopedia. Thus, we have no inside track on the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the left hand side of your screen. If that is not fruitful, we have a reference desk, divided into various subjects areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 11:16, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Translating articles

I would like to translate es:Juan Bustos into English for Juan Bustos. What is the way to do this while fulfilling the attribution requirement of the GFDL. (Is there a template, or should I state it in the edit summary)Anonymous101 (talk) 10:25, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphans

edit

If an image file is an orphan, not linked to any page, does it get automatically deleted after a time?

Sardaka (talk) 10:54, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If tagged as non-free, then yes, since the criteria state it must be use in at least one article. Free images, no. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 10:56, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Frigoglass correction

edit

Please change to the following: Frigoglass is the world's largest beverage cooler(ICM) manufacturer with operations in 18 countries across 4 continents. The company is based in Athens, Greece and has operations in Europe, Africa and Asia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.92.131.138 (talk) 11:26, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The joy of Wikipedia is that anyone can edit any article - just click the "Edit" button (top middle of the page) in the article in question Frigoglass and make the changes. However, note that all information on Wikipedia needs to be verifiable - see also Wikipedia:Cite your sources. — QuantumEleven 12:10, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As Quantum says, you can edit the Frigoglass article yourself (I don't think it is protected, so you won't need a Wikipedia account to do this). But you will need to reference a reliable source for these facts, and explain just what you mean by "operations" - the Frigoglass website (linked from the article) says it has "production facilities in 10 countries on 3 continents". And the phrase "world's largest" is likely to be disqualified as a peacock term unless you can provide a very reliable and clear third-party source to support that claim. Removing WikEd buttons

edit

Is there a command line to add to monobook.js that would remove the Wiked buttons from the editing page? -- MacAddct  1984 (talk • contribs) 14:48, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disable it in Special:Preferences > Gadgets or remove it from from your monobook.js. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 16:11, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I like the other feature of wikEd, the text coloring when editing articles, I would just like the toolbar buttons to be removed. Something like: ShowWikEdButtons=false would be nice. -- MacAddct  1984 (talk • contribs) 16:57, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Multi-Liscence template

edit

I am looking for the multi-licensing template that says all my contributions are in the public domain. Anyone know where to find this? I checked Wikipedia:Multi-licensing but it did not seem to have it. - Icewedge (talk) 17:20, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I found it (Wikipedia:Userboxes/Large/Licencing). - Icewedge (talk) 17:22, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alaskan Highway

edit

Block quote

I am planning to ride to Alaska on the Alaskan Highway next May or June. I will be riding a motorcycle. Due to my limited range on a tank of gas(approximately 160 miles)I am concerned about the frequency of gas stations on the route. I can carry a limited amount of extra gas if absolutely necessary but would prefer not to.

I am wondering if there is a book, article, or map I can purchase or access for this information? I don't know where to start or who to ask so any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Gary W Gilbert (phone number and email removed for protection)

Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. I hope this helps. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:33, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Our Alaskan Highway article has some links, for example Driving the Alaska Highway. You can also search the Web with Google for Alaskan Highway. Good luck. --Teratornis (talk) 21:51, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What's this process called?

edit

You do something with your account where WP gives you like a long series of numbers or letters so that if your account is ever "compromised", you can prove your identity. I've seen the name before, but I forgot it. How do you do it, too? ——Mr. E. Sánchez Wanna know my story?/ Share yours with me! 18:53, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

{{Committed identity}}. What the point basically is is that you take a "secret message", encode it in a one-way cryptographic hash such as SHA, and publicly display the encoded message on your userpage. If your account is taken over, and you regain control, give a trusted user the original secret message, and they can calculate the hash of that and verify that you are the rightful controller of your account. To calculate the "hash", I would suggest using a website like http://www.hashemall.com/ Calvin 1998 (t-c) 19:05, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! ——Mr. E. Sánchez Wanna know my story?/ Share yours with me! 20:15, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This was not my question but I've wondered about those hash things. If the "trusted user" compares the two hashes and gets a match, what do they do then?
Also that website has many different algorithms. Presumably it makes a difference which is used. Which one should be used? Thanks. Wanderer57 (talk) 00:42, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Wanderer. I would go with 512. That's the one I use, and the default algorithm. —Mizu onna sango15Hello! 00:54, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A match confirms that you are the person who was in control of the account at the time the account calculated the hash and published it (as theoretically only that person knows the pre-hash value). As to which should be used, it really doesn't matter, although SHA-512 appears to be the most secure. Just make sure you put the right one into the template, otherwise recalculation will fail. Need assistance to delete a first draft, unwanted sentence located within a dotted line border on the Webb Pierce page

edit

I placed additional information on the Wikipedia site about country music star, Webb Pierce. I have been unable to delete (edit) a first draft sentence that now appears in a dotted line bordered box in the middle of the text. This sentence does not appear on the edit page only in the final version.

I could not locate the proper method of deleting this sentence in the help section.

Mikljon (talk) 23:10, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The dotted box is made when a line starts with a space like this line.
At least one of your edits to Webb Pierce did that. All your edits to the article have since been reverted. If you still see the dotted box or other parts of your edits then you probably have to bypass your cache. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:32, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Lost in Love"

edit

My apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong place, but I don't want to mess anything up. I decided to create some pages for songs by Air Supply that didn't already have them, and I started with "Lost in Love". When I typed it into the search box, both "Lost in Love" and "Lost In Love" came up, which I assumed both went to the same place. The one with the lowercase i was a redirect page to the Air Supply page, so I went there, deleted the redirect and created the page. Then I realized that the one with the capital I was a disambigutaion page, so I moved "Lost in Love" to "Lost in Love (Air Supply song)". Now I think the disambig page with the capital I needs to be moved to conform to wiki-spelling, but I think that may mess the whole thing up since "Lost in Love" redirects to the song page, thus looping in a double redirect or something? If anybody can fix this, I'd be grateful - thanks. Zephyrnthesky (talk) 23:17, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There, I believe it's fixed. I redirected Lost In Love to Lost in Love, which I made into the disambig page. DaRkAgE7[Talk] 23:23, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Darkage7. I was worried about messing something up when I realized the old disambig page needed to be moved, and I started giving myself a headache. I feel like I know a lot of the basics, but redirects are a bit past me. Much obliged. Zephyrnthesky (talk) 23:31, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
