Please do not add unreferenced or poorly referenced information, especially if controversial, to articles or any other page on Wikipedia about living (or recently deceased) persons, as you did to Marc B. Shapiro. Thank you. FuriouslySerene (talk) 16:26, 5 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to Wikipedia. This means that editors do not own articles, including ones they create, and should respect the work of their fellow contributors on Marc B. Shapiro. If you create or edit an article, remember that others are free to change its content. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.   Hello. Your recent edit to Gans (surname) appears to have added the name of a non-notable entity to a list that normally includes only notable entries. In general, a person or organization added to a list should have a pre-existing article before being added to most lists. If you wish to create such an article, please first confirm that the subject qualifies for a separate, stand-alone article according to Wikipedia's notability guideline. Thank you. Proposed deletion of Dovid Magid

edit

The article Dovid Magid has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of notability. His resignation merited a very, very short section in the "Jewish Press", and he co-signed an open letter. The school where he was Rosh Yeshiva is not particularly big or noteworthy. Fails WP:BIO.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.   Hello Zeke921, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to Yechezkel Feivel have been removed, as they appear to have added copyrighted material without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 12:10, 23 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

We should fix up the Noda BeYehuda's page - way to short. Needs to have his opposition to chasidim and widespread learning of kabbalah, more detailed description of his position in the fight with Yaavetz and R' Yehonasan, and at least some "notable rulings" - maybe the teshuva about hunting and the one about doing teshuva?

The article Jonah Goldberg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Saul Levi Morteira - a shocking revelation

edit

Rabbi Morteira in his later years, after moving to England.

After intense research, I have deduced that Rabbi Morteira and Professor Moriarty are one and the same. Consider the commonalities - the names are virtually identical, both were unconventional, both were highly intelligent, both were involved in study and education, both lived in Western Europe, both were mysterious individuals whom little is known about. The evidence is overwhelming. In order to deny this, we must claim that by sheer coincidence, two mysterious people with nearly identical names, positions, and actions, ended up in the same area, one appearing shortly after the death of the other. Obviously, this is highly unlikely. High Leader (talk) 01:18, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Seconded. In fact, Rabbi Morteira clearly references the fateful day when he throws Sherlock off the cliff and he discusses the halachic legal ramifications of it User:Zeke921

And what was his conclusion? I hope he wasn't matir ishto leshuk? High Leader (talk) 02:32, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Well, he discusses it under the guise of a discussion about evil witnesses pushing an alleged murderer off the cliff. - Zeke921, even though he didn't sign his name משום ענווה יתירה.

I don't think it can be a discussion of the event - he was still living in Amsterdam then; I would posit that he was issuing a veiled threat. I'm not sure he was even involved in Talmudic studies when he lived in England - he seems to have focused on mathematics and astronomy at that time of his life.High Leader (talk) 02:50, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Holmes doesn't seem to have had even a hint of Moriartys' past - note how he describes him

He is a man of good birth and excellent education, endowed by nature with a phenomenal mathematical faculty. At the age of twenty-one he wrote a treatise upon the binomial theorem which has had a European vogue. On the strength of it, he won the mathematical chair at one of our smaller universities, and had, to all appearances, a most brilliant career before him.

And

Is he not the celebrated author of The Dynamics of an Asteroid, a book which ascends to such rarefied heights of pure mathematics that it is said that there was no man in the scientific press capable of criticizing it?

Ironically, this would mean Moriartys' threat was lost upon Holmes. High Leader (talk) 02:58, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Further evidence to the Morteira - Moriarty theory can be brought from the last names - each hints to the other life. Mort is Latin for death - thus Morteira hints to a Moriarty; mori means "my teacher" in Hebrew, an obvious reference to a Jewish educational career.
