How does X work? edit

{{helpme}} Your question. --Wandev (talk) 13:40, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I attempted to edit the article "Service a la russe" in a citation missing location. I was unable to successfully add the citation and wrote to Wikipedia for assistance. I did not receive a response. My citation was to the book "Charlemagne's Tablecloth" and I provided citation references. The book discussed the arrival in England of service a la russe, replacing in popularity service a la francaise. I would still like to know how to edit an article by supplying an omitted citation. Thank you.

Hi there. That sounds like a good way to get started, so I hope I can help.
If you go to Service à la russe and click edit, you should see part of the code that looks like this;
...later caught on in [[England]].  {{Fact|date=July 2007}}
The part that says {{Fact|date=July 2007}} is the thing that causes it to say "[citation needed]", so you should remove that bit, and replace it with a reference. The reference should begin with <ref> and end with </ref>. Whatever you put in-between those will be the reference. For example, you could put something like this;
...later caught on in [[England]].<ref>"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>
If you make the above change and save it, there will be a small number after the word 'England', which will link to the reference details in the 'References' section.
Please be bold and try to make the change. If you have trouble, or if it goes wrong, don't worry - just ask for help. All edits are stored and can easily be 'undone'.
For more help, you can either;
  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live, with this or this.
Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  14:01, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

(edit conflict)
Hello Wandev,
All the help is on Wikipedia:Citing sources, but the article is way too long to be understood on the first time (and even after the 10th time there are still some obscure passages only waiting for jumping on you by surprise).
Basically, you need to put your citation between <ref> and </ref> and then add a section with <references/> at the end of the article.
For example, on Service à la russe, click on Edit this page. Then replace {{Fact|date=July 2007}} by something like <ref>Author, Charlemagne's Tablecloth, Publisher, Year, ISBN</ref>.
If you cannot do it, just put the citation between parenthesis: a more experimented editor will format it for you!
Hope it helps. Calimo (talk) 14:03, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

ようこそ
  • You don't need to read anything - anybody can edit; just go to an article and edit it. Be Bold, but please don't put silly stuff in - it will be removed very quickly, and will annoy people.
  • Ask for help. Talk to us live, or edit this page, put {{helpme}} and describe what help you need. Someone will reply very quickly - usually within a few minutes.
  • Edit existing articles, before you make your own. Look at some subjects that you know about, and see if you can make them a bit better. For example, Wikipedia:Cleanup#2009.
  • When you're ready, read about Your first article. It should be about something well-known, and it will need references.

Good luck with editing; please drop me a line some time on my own talk page.

There's lots of information below. Once again, welcome to the fantastic world of Wikipedia!
