Sorry for the late reply, I'm a bit tired and busy lately. My knowledge in that period isn't very throughout so I don't think I'm qualified to make judgments on accuracy. Insistance of Modu Chanyu likeness under Turkish imagination/model

edit

Hi Deadkid. You said "omgwtf" because of the citation for facts on the contentious matter regarding the Turkish-based nationalist (racist?) or Turkish-fantasy of the Modu Chanyu image and likeness. The only surviving references to Xiongnu people exist only in surviving Chinese-based historical texts, where no indications are made to any extraordinary or unusual appearances as to the racial background of the Xiongnu and Modu Chanyu. If anything ethnic or racial that can be drawn from these references, it would be the indication that Xiongnu are related to the ancestry of the Han Chinese themselves, to that of King Jie of Xia according to Sima Qian. To have the likeness of Modu Chanyu fashioned after some imagination and ethnically-biased slant of some Turkish fantasy is simply veering away from the facts and thus un-encyclopedic and warranted for removal due to deceiving and mis-educating potential readers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.130.8.150 (talk) 05:54, 2 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

It is clear that the statue is an imagined depiction, nobody said this is how he had looked like. The point of the image was to provide a view on his legacy (legitimate or not), since we have no clear knowledge of what historical figures looked like. If even an imagined likeness can be contentious, then I'm afraid the pictures of statues in Shang Yang, Qin Shi Huang, Sun Zi and the like would also be considered unencyclopedic, misleading, etc. Since you obviously are deeply invested in this issue, I invite and urge you to find a better picture that conforms to the license requirements of Wikipedia. Please continue this discussion on the article's talk page so others can have a chance to join in. _dk (talk) 06:09, 2 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have started this topic on the actual article's talk page, and I will maintain the citations tag or remove the image, and you may do the same with the disagreement you have about the image/likeness of Shang Yang, Qin Shi Huang, Sun Zi and any other ancient Chinese figureheads. Although these individuals you mentioned have far more historic precedence to their appearance than the Turkish-based Modu Chanyu, I would say that any ancient anonymous Asian male picture would easily make more sense than the current Turkish slant, but I would not resort to that. Apparently a Russian sponsored archaeological dig in the 1930's uncovered a painting of an "Mongoloid" male in an alleged royal Xiongnu tomb in Mongolia, but the Russian team apparently disappeared with it, and thus we are supposed to live with the Turkish rendition of Modu Chanyu. Better yet, the picture should just be removed, and I'll tag it for citations one more time before it's gone. I will bring this to the attention of Chinese archaeological authorities, and maybe they can lead us to more convincing material. Happy Chinese and Mongolian New Year! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.130.8.150 (talk) 06:35, 2 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Editor review

edit

Hi, do you mind doing an editor review for me here? Thanks. _LDS (talk) 15:02, 6 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I, uh, don't really have the time to do a formal review, sorry. But I can casually say stuff here, I suppose. I really appreciate your efforts in regards to Chinese history and literature. One thing I'm concerned about is how the fictional biography of historical people (Duan Yu, Duan Zhixing, etc.) can be overly detailed compared to their real biography. _dk (talk) 02:10, 7 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hahaha, thanks for your informal review and comments. Yes, you're right that fictional biographies shouldn't be longer than real ones for historical characters. I'll try to shorten the fictional stuff, but another possible means of fixing the problem, is to expand the real parts to restore the balance or something. However, my knowledge about most of the historical people is limited to only their roles in fiction. Maybe you can help me out on this? Once again, thanks for your comments! Cheers! _LDS (talk) 04:33, 7 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, the historical stuff on the Duan Zhixing article is all I came up with after I got into a dispute with another editor who insisted on removing the fictional stuff there. The fictional section used to be much longer before too...you can check the history of that article to get a sense of what I mean. _dk (talk) 06:44, 7 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Three Kingdoms Wiki

Hello, I noticed you've been editting the Three Kingdoms section a lot on this Wiki and I really like some of your articles, so I was wondering, if perhaps you'd like to contribute to a Wikia that focusses on the historical aspect of the Three Kingdoms. It's a rather new wikia but it's slowly growing in popularity and we could use someone like you! Please have a look and let me know what you think :-) --Plunged (talk) 13:27, 28 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thank you for the invitation! I admire the efforts to bring the historical facts to greater attention, and this is what I am trying to do here on Wikipedia. While I may do some minor work on the new wikia (such as correcting the Chinese characters -- may I suggest not using machine translations for those?), I'd hate to make the bulk of my work here redundant :( In the meantime, can I interest you and members of the Three Kingdoms Wiki to participate in our WikiProject Three Kingdoms here on Wikipedia? I am provisionally its leader right now and it could use some more history-oriented people such as you to clean up the massive dreg of fictional material in Three Kingdoms articles on Wikipedia. Cheers. :) _dk (talk) 01:39, 29 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome! I noticed you were bringing TK history to greater attention and that's why I invited you :-) I'm personally a big fan of its historical aspect. I currently don't have any great ways of translating English to Chinese symbols, though, that's why I use online machines... what do you use?
Anyway, I understand you don't wanna make your work redundant, but you're welcome to edit anytime on the wikia of course :-) And I guess I can do the same for your 3K Project here :-) -- Plunged (talk) 09:21, 29 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
I suppose the Chinese is easier for me since I'm a native speaker =D There probably isn't much a non-speaker can do...except, some sources actually list the Chinese characters, like Rafe de Crespigny does in his books in print. _dk (talk) 10:34, 29 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Self-published sources cannot be used as sources on wikipedia unless written by a published and recognized expert in the field. Other wikis are never reliable sources. This applies to all topics equally. Your edit summary here [1] borders on a personal attack and please do not remove maintenance tags without addressing them. There is no significant coverage by reliable third parties attributed in that article and it appears to be self-published which means it hasn't been released by a notable publisher which would attach notability to it. If you want to provide proper attribution for those claims per Wikipedia:V#Burden_of_evidence you're welcome to, but restoring those unreliable sources to that article isn't the answer, and isn't going to stick.--Crossmr (talk) 23:28, 6 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

And you would do well to check my edit again, which was not an undo. I apologize for the personal attack, which was out of line and should have been kept to myself. _dk (talk) 01:56, 7 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the credits99 link still seems to be a self-published link, it doesn't resemble a reliable source at all [2] and I'm not convinced notability has been addressed. Are both of those japanese articles fully about the game itself or are they about the creator? I can't view the text of the second one at all and the first one seems to actually be about a different game. As I said, don't remove maintenance tags without actually addressing them. You'd need to provide 2 articles fully about the game from reliable sources to address notability.--Crossmr (talk) 02:18, 7 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
The credits99 link is of a student club in Hitotsubashi University that hosted the lecture. Not self-published in the sense that it's independent from the game's maker, I'm sure. As for your other concerns, they are duly noted. Thank you. _dk (talk) 02:32, 7 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Totally self-published. fails WP:RS self-published refers to anything. It doesn't matter if its independent of the subject or not. Self-published by the game-maker would make it at least reliable, but not usable for notability.--Crossmr (talk) 12:50, 7 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
As I have said on the edit summary, that source is only a transcription of the game maker's lecture, fully at the consent of the maker and thus reliable. Notability had not been on my mind when I used that source, my priority was fact checking (which a citation should be about). If you do not agree, you are at your liberty to ask a third party to assess the situation. _dk (talk) 17:26, 7 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't matter it still fails WP:RS. Being at the consent of the maker doesn't make it a reliable source. It is content sitting on a self-published website. Where it came from, who approved, etc doesn't change it's status. I've given you ample opportunity to provide to provide a source which meets WP:RS and at this point I'm more then in right to completely remove the content and not just the inappropriate source. If you insist on restoring the inappropriate source I'll do just that, under burden of evidence if you want the material in the article you need to provide the source. I'm willing to let it remain to give you time to find a proper source for now, but I highly recommend you read this section again Wikipedia:RS#Self-published_sources_.28online_and_paper.29. Anyone can create a website or pay to have a book published, then claim to be an expert in a certain field. it doesn't matter what is claimed on that site, it is self-published and absolutely 100% cannot be used as a citation on anything on wikipedia, unless the article happened to be about that student organization and it could be verified that that site belonged to them. Self-published or questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves, This site is not made by the maker himself, thus it's out. Without a reliable source, nothing said in that talk is usable as citation on wikipedia since the content hasn't been published and isn't accessible.--Crossmr (talk) 23:37, 7 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I respectably disagree with your assessment and will ask for a third party's opinion if you decide to press the matter. _dk (talk) 23:51, 7 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Romanization for words of English origin

edit

On the MOS:JP talk page, a discussion has been started about including or not including romanizations for words of English origin, such as Fainaru Fantajī in Final Fantasy (ファイナルファンタジー, Fainaru Fantajī) (for the sake of simplicity, I called this case "words of English origin", more information on semantics here).

Over the course of a month, it has become apparent that both the parties proposing to include or not include those romanizations cannot be convinced by the arguments or guidelines brought up by the other side. Therefore, a compromise is trying to be found that will satisfy both parties. One suggestion on a compromise has been given already, but it has not found unanimous agreement, so additional compromises are encouraged to be suggested.

One universally accepted point was to bring more users from the affected projects in to help achieve consensus, and you were one of those selected in the process.

What this invitation is:

  • You should give feedback on the first suggested compromise and are highly encouraged to provide other solutions.

What this invitation is not:

  • This is not a vote on including or excluding such romanizations.
  • This is not a vote on compromises either.

It would be highly appreciated if you came over to the MOS:JP talk page and helped find a solution. Thank you in advance. Prime Blue (talk) 11:29, 8 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I might need a Chinese-language intermediary

edit
I'll be glad to help. The Chinese source you gave....I think it would be difficult to argue for its inclusion in its current state, since wretch.cc is a blog site. Of course the images themselves could be argued that they are over 100 years old, but the copyright statuses aren't really clear on that site, and unless the Chinese uploaders own those photos themselves, I can't imagine they can be of much help =\ But I'll see what I can do, at least in translation. _dk (talk) 09:40, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Is there any info on the blog about who took the photos? If we can show that the photographer has been dead for 70 years, then hey presto, the images are PD... there are other image problems in the review, too... • Ling.Nut 00:13, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
I don't think the info's on the blog. Maybe ask the uploaders or the bloggers where exactly did they get the images. _dk (talk) 00:47, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Oh, so the question's not actually about the source but actually about the author and date now...? Then I think the best approach would be to find those sources directly, if possible... _dk (talk) 00:53, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Three Kingdoms Images

edit

I recently scanned and put up some images from a book of mine, and inserted them into the Sima Yi article to see if they'd pass the "usability" test. I'm not an experienced editor, so it was basically an experiment.

I see that you've incorporated those images into related articles, which is wonderful. There are many more images from the same source in my book, and if you think they'd be usable, let me know and I'll be happy to scan and upload them.

Some examples:

  • Lu Xun holds a meeting and decides to attack the Shu army with fire
  • Pang De battles Guan Yu
  • Cao Biao is killed by Sima Yi's men

etc.

Let me know if you can use these and I'll be happy to scan and upload them Alex Small (talk) 04:43, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
